    A big improvement

    • Written by from Chardon

This is an expensive product. But it is also an excellent one.

My wife and I both have had various Macbooks and Macbook Pros for years. We have used Time Machine since its inception, and have always relied on it for backups. Being laptops, we've preferred wireless backup drives.

We have tried using several solutions. The most reliable seemed to be an Apple Airport with drives hooked up to the USB ports. Though this worked fairly well, there was always little problems, mostly centering around drive availability when Time Machine was ready to back up. Time Machine seems pretty sensitive to any significant latency when it's ready to do it's thing, often requiring a reboot to get everything back in line when a glitch happened. Various workarounds helped, but there were still little niggling problems now and then.

Not any more! Since installing our 3 TB Time Capsule, things click along smooth as silk. When Time Machine wakes up to do it's thing, the Time Capsule's drive mounts on my desktop. The backup happens, and the drive disappears. Simple, quick and reliable. I also have two drives connected for extra storage, both of which work great, and three printers shared, all of which are easily accessible from my Macs, my PCs, and even my Linux boxes.

Good job, Apple! Well worth the price!

    The new one is great

    • Written by from Milton Keynes

Yes the old tc's did have the dying problem but they have fixed that on the new one it is great. I run mine 24/7 and its been running for 2 1/2 years if you have an old one before it dies what you need to do is buy an apple AirPort Extreme and then buy either a 3TB or a 2TB hard drive connect it to the extreme through the USB and you will have it just like the tc only it will work forever and it will work with time machine and it will be just like a tc and back up wirelessly

    Time Capsule LOVE

    • Written by from BUCKLEY

I bought my first TC (500GB) 6+ years ago with my 24" iMac. It was a breeze to set up and has reliably backed up every hour since - saving my bacon on many occasions. My only "problem" came last year when the TC was full, at which point it obviously and understandably couldn't perform full back-ups and I had to make some manual provisions. At that point I purchased a 2TB TC, which has also worked flawlessly and now backs up both my 24" and 27" iMacs - loaded with large graphic design and motion graphic files. We had a power outage yesterday at which point I lost some unsaved files on my 27". TC saved the day yet again.

I don't understand the problems people are having with set-up and early drive failure. If you have a problem, call Apple's legendary service line and they'll quickly resolve it for you. I never go without Apple Care for extended protection. Oh, and my 6+ year old TC? Still runs like a champ. I just use it for a back up external drive now that my 2TB has taken over as primary router and back up. Apple rocks and the TC is no exception.

    Time Capsule saved my job!

    • Written by from Sutton Coldfield

I purchased one of these last summer to replace my old Netgear router. The 3tb backup seemed like a nice bonus so I decided I would go for that model as I work long hours and unfortunately don't have time to regularly back up my data (I know, it's bad). On Monday this week, I copied everything off my Macbook to an external drive in order to make space for some development work I had to do. At the end of the day I went to put it all back on my Mac and....clunk! the external drive failed completely, with everything I have worked on for the last 12 months (and it was really important data too with severe implications for the company I work for had it been lost). Fortunately when I got home, I found my time Capsule had EVERYTHING backed up to 2:00am the evening before when I had last shut down my Macbook. I had never made any effort to back this stuff up other than to initially set up the device and forget about it, and it was all waiting for me. I went back to work the next day and found my boss looking very unhappy, he was at a loss as to what we would do without this data. When I told him about the Time Capsule his face lit up, we are all so happy, several colleagues have since gone out to buy TC's and my new nickname at work is "Captain Time Capsule". Thank you Apple, you have saved my rear end, from me and from everyone here at (a competing I.T company) :-)

    Easiest Installation Ever!

    • Written by from Grand Junction

We purchased the 3TB Time Capsule to replace an existing AirPort Extreme on a hybrid Apple/Windows network. I dreaded the the changeover for fear of the nightmare it would be with all the various devices on the network. These fears were totally unfounded. It took less than five minutes to make a seamless transition. We plugged the TimeCapsule in and it all but did everything automatically. It even transferred the old settings and reset the old AE base to factory settings. I didn't have to do a thing other than make a few clicks.

Thank you 1 Infinite Loop for making product that was so easy to install and plays very nicely with products from Redmond, WA.

    Perfect for wireless and backup

    • Written by from Birkeroed

Our previous Linksys access point disconnected devices randomly, and had to be restarted once or twice a day :-/ ... and since my old backup disks were low on space, we decided to go for the Time Capsule.

Extremely easy setup - even more than expected. Perfect connectivity for all of our devices (3 iPads, 4 iPhones, 1 iMac, 2 MacBooks, 1 AppleTV) - have not had to restart the Capsule since we bought it three weeks back ... particularly popular with the kids (and my wife), now they can watch Netflix without interruptions :-) Also i got 89 Mbs via wireless on our 100 Mbs fiber, when in the same room or the the rooms next to it, and 25 Mbs when in the rooms furthest away (where the Linksys previously couldn't stream flicks from Netflix).

I've learned taking backup the hard way ... and with a Time Machine - Time Capsule combo it is extremely hassle free (compared to Buffalo devices). All three mac's backup without any worries (and the first backup used restricted bandwidth, so it didn't affect normal use). Need to see though how the setup handles errors - I expect a disk break down in two to three years, and when that happens on the Time Machine I truly hope notifications on the macs are aggressive enough so I will notice it and be able to get a new disk/time capsule.

    So simple...

I'm not sure why this is getting bad reviews. I guess people don't read the descriptions properly before they buy it. I found it very easy and simple to set up and use. Great bit of kit...

    Marvellous device

    • Written by from BRISTOL

Works really well as a back up device. Have had for 4 years backing up 4 Macs. No hassle, works in the background and works flawlessly for retrieving files.
NB: Don't expect it to back up iPhones/iPads as these are not OSX compatible and back up to iCloud automatically anyway.

    Extremely satisfied again!

    • Written by from Berwyn

July of 2011 I replaced my original 1TB Time Capsule with this 3TB model as I needed more storage. (I never had issues with the first one by the way.) Contrary to some users mine has not run hot, it's always been slightly warm.

It's connected via ethernet to a U-verse router (of which I've disabled its wireless), and use only the Time Capsule's wireless for managing an iMac, Macbook Air, two iPads, two iPhones, an Apple TV, two Airport Express units for audio, another Airport enabled powered speaker system, and three other TV products. I can honestly say I don't experience any drop outs or connection issues.

It backs up the iMac and Macbook Air perfectly, and I can't say enough about how flawless the backups work in their timeframe slices, that execution is just excellent and easy to use.

If something unfortunate should happen to it I'd replace it in a jiffy without hesitating. It's been a great product for me twice now.

Just added 3T time capsule to U-Verse gateway

    • Written by from Flossmoor

I debated about this purchase for a week after reading many threads on the support page regarding Time Capsule and U-Verse set up. I worried for nothing! My new T3 time capsule arrived today and the set up took less than 5 minutes.

I have it connected to the U-Verse gateway via Ethernet cable, and the Airport set up assistant did the rest. I created a completely new second wireless network (password protected), and I can choose which network I want to connect to with each of my devices. My U-Verse works flawlessly, and I am backing up my Mac Book Pro as I write this.

I did take a tip from a post that suggested putting the TC on 2 chopsticks to elevate off the surface - to disperse some of the heat.
I also changed the settings on my printer to print wirelessly from the TC, and that is working fine too!
So far I am very pleased!

    Awesome innovation!

    • Written by from Zionsville

Converted to all Apple from 0 Apple in summer 2011. Have been very impressed with the Time Capluse. First, it interfaces and makes all the Apple features work on the devices connected to it (pads, phones, TV, Mini, Air's). I love the auto backups via Time Machine from the three machines in the house. I just established a periodic off-site backup protocol and Apple JV helped me configure the Airport Utility to back up the entire Capsule to external Hitichi G drive which I will take to the office in case of disaster @ home. One thing the engineers need to do though is make it possible to encrypt the backup drive for added security of offsite drives.

    Use Windows

    • Written by from Luton

    Hey Everyone,
All you probably need to do is to connect your time capsule to the ADSL modem connected to the phone box then make sure you're running windows and follow the steps in the manual for windows only.

    NOT MAC OSX

An absolute must for Apple Lovers

    • Written by from Moreno Valley

I'm on my second time capsule (I wanted more storage). It is literally a "set it and forget it machine". This newer generation is much more reliable than the earlier models, although I did not have much trouble with that one either.

Wish I could spring for a 3TB model!

BEST ROUTER AND BACKUP SOLUTION EVER!!

    • Written by from Dayton

Bought this refurbished even and it works great. Backs up my data for when the bad times come and works as a great Wi-Fi solution in conjunction with the AirPort Express I have that repeats the signal without using another. Great product. Wi-Fi is comparable to the top of the line Linksys router, with the exception that AirPort does not bond channels in the 2.4GHz band because of the likelihood of interference with nearby networks. This maxes out 802.11n in a practical way and uses a unique feature that allows for the fastest speeds using the Broadcom chip inside, an advantage a Linksys router does not have. I love being able to plug a printer or USB hub into the back to plug in whatever printer or storage device I want. Best thing ever.

    Amazing Product!

    • Written by from Guelph

I was very skeptical about this product after reading a lot of the reviews on this website. I was afraid that I would have trouble getting things set up, and even if I had no trouble at all, I worried that the machine would simply stop working at some point.

I have to say that Apple has made set up using the Airport Utility so simple. This was the easiest wireless network I have ever set up and the signal strength is fantastic!. Furthermore, using the Time Capsule to back up my mac was seamless, though it did take quite a while the first time.

As for the crashing issues, I can't speak to that now because my product is fairly new, but so far this has been an amazing investment. Worth the money for sure.

This fourth generation time capsule rocks.

    • Written by from st thomas

This fourth generation time capsule is this best by far. Very simple and easy to used. Not only an external hard drive but also a airport extreme base station. Download 250 GB wirelessly over night with plenty of storage left on it massive 3TB hard drive. Like every apple product, it is very slick, elegant, and pleasing to the eyes. Hope apple will continue to make great products that are above the rest. Please do not let Steve Jobs down.

A Year ago I gave it one star, but now...

    • Written by from Portland

A year or so ago I gave the Time Capsule one star because I had a really hard time setting it up for the first three months I had it. I was on the phone with Apple Care people roughly four times to get it all figured out.

Apple must have changed around the software somewhere because it's way easier to set up now. For about the last year it hasn't given me any troubles, even if the power goes out.
