Wish I'd read more pre-submitted questions and answers before buying

In my opinion I will probably use this as a bedside stand to charge the iPad overnight.

My two main gripes with this accessory are...
    1. I bought this to be used with the Digital AV connector. However, the ipad can only be positioned in portrait; this is fine for most applications but when connecting via the Digital AV connector most movies, pictures would be more suited to being displayed in landscape.
    2. The smart cover does not sit neatly behind the ipad when docked, therefore it either needs to be removed completely each time the dock is used or it has to be folded to one side, which looks untidy.
Overall disappointed. I would have expected more thought from Apple given the innovative ideas that have gone into the iPad and the price of the accessory.

    Adjustable Docks are the answer!

    • Written by from HAMDEN

The problem with all of Apple's docks (iPad2, iPhone, iPod) is, that as soon as you put any case on your device, however thin, it no longer fits in the dock. Charging your device is impossible without removing the cover. In the case of my 64GB, iPad2, a thin Mareware protective back cover for my iPad2 renders my dock useless. Knowing that people are going to want to protect such an expensive investment should be taken into account when Apple designs their docks. A little extra wiggle room wouldn't be so difficult to design into the docks.
"IDEA!!!!!!", maybe even some front to back adjustability, to accommodate different size cases.

Only works well with a naked iPad - no covers

    • Written by from Crouch

The dock doesn't work well with the smart cover on. You have to leave it partially open, which makes it a bit unstable. Otherwise you have to take the smart cover off completely. I also bought a thin gel cover that slips onto the back of the iPad to protect it. Now I cannot use the dock at all, but the gel cover is such a great accessory that I refuse to do without. The gel cover was designed to use with the apple smart cover, but is not an Apple product. The smart cover is a pretty good stand if you are happy with landscape mode for your photo frame, so I would not recommend the dock unless you have money to blow.

    terrible design

    • Written by from CLAYVILLE

Why on earth would apple make a stand that doesn't fit if you use the case they make? It won't even work with the smart cover they make and sell! Ridiculous. I'm returning it, terrible design, terrible product, very disappointed Apple would make something this poor.

    Not worth it

    • Written by from Forest Grove

First, only item in the box is the dock, nothing else is included. $29.00 is a lot of money for what is essentially a big, white plastic connector.
Second, the dock does not accommodate the smart cover! Come on Apple, you specifically designed the smart cover for the iPad2 and also this dock is specifically designed for the iPad2 -- why don't they work together? I can't believe that I either have to remove the smart cover or have the smart cover flopped to the side just to dock my iPad2.
Third, it is not easy to align the iPad2 with the dock’s connector. The iPad2's connector port is on the back. The dock's connector is obscured by the dock's design when trying to dock the iPad2. Good luck trying to determine if you have the two perfectly aligned before pressing down to dock…

    BAD!

    • Written by from Clarendon Hills

I was so disappointed in this design, it does not fit with a silicone cover on, or with the smart cover on. I'm sure if I took the silicone cover off, each time I charged it, it would get stretched out, or rip. The other problem I have found is that the dock is not sturdy enough to hold my ipad2! It kept falling over! the worst part of all of this, is that I bought 2 of them, of course I did not save the receipt! Yeah!

    Design flaw!!

    • Written by from Corona

This dock is stronger and sturdier than the one Apple previously offerred. However, it is not designed for the iPad2 to sit on the dock with the smart cover closed! Bigger and stronger is better but, you really need to re-design it so that the iPad 2 sits on the dock with the smart cover closed. C'mon Apple!! Fix this flaw and it'll get more stars.

    Very bad

    • Written by from VERO BEACH

I don't know who designed the iPad Dock but it just doesn't fit with the smart cover. It really bothers me as usually all Apple products fit perfectly, but this time they screwed up as it is even nowhere mentioned that you can't use it with the smartcover.

    Apple please change that immediatly!

    Want not, waste not.

    • Written by from clayton

This is really a waste, because it does not support any other idevice. So instead of having a single cable occupying one usb slot and dangling from my imac, I now have two : One for this new cradle and one for the rest of idevices.
Way to go apple designers !!!

One more thing, you have to remove the cover so your iApd2 can fit. Even the smart cover deigned by apple has to be removed.

Not a wise product and definitely not a wise purchase.

Not as thoughtful as most Apple products

    • Written by from Tallahassee

Only works in portrait orientation and the iPad doesn't fit in it with the smart cover on it. AND, one has to change plugs from computer to wall to sync depending on whether you want to charge or sync...really, it's not as intuitive or smartly designed as most other Apple products. I would not purchase again...there are other, better products out there without these limitations.

    Awful

    • Written by from Walnut Creek

I believed the promo "you can even use it as a picture frame while it's charging" and "Use the dock to hold iPad 2 at the perfect angle to compose email and notes using a Bluetooth keyboard or to watch your favorite videos or photo slideshows."

Well, that's pretty much not true unless you're the rare individual who shoots most of your pictures in portrait mode rather than landscape, and you like to compose your notes and emails with your iPad in an almost vertical position. And whose would want to watch his favorite video with the iPad siting vertically?
Not only is it hard to insert the iPad into, it doesn't accommodate the smart-cover.

Save your money. I wish I had.

Very disappointed, scratched my iPad 3

    • Written by from LONDON

I am very disappointed with the iPad dock. Its seems It can be difficult to place the iPad 3 on the dock due to the bevelled edge as the bottom of the ipad.

When attempting to place my iPad on the dock it slipped, missing the dock connector. This resulted in the two prongs (located at the end of each end of the dock connector) scratching the rear of my iPad 3 in 3 separate places.

I'm a big fan of Apple products, but feel they have made a big mistake with this flimsy dock.

Does not work with smart cover

    • Written by from Waddell

This has to be the worst design ever. Apple, you promote the smart cover but yet cannot charge the iPad2 on the dock with the smart cover attached. The lip on the front is what prevents it from working. It is also hard to connect in fear of damaging the port.

    Worthless device

    • Written by from Berkeley

Have 2 iPad2's and 2 of these docks. BOTH of these docks have stopped charging either iPad.

Different environments, different locations. Both signal that they are connecting (via a beep) when first docked and the charging icon changes, but the batteries keep draining.

Has to be the dock, as they both charge fine when the supplied charging cable Is used. HIGHLY disappointed in this product!

Quite ridiculous !!! READ THE DETAIL CAREFULLY !!!

    • Written by from BANBURY

First, this dock DOES manage to hold the iPad at a sensible angle. The actual connection with the dock connector is a little hit and miss. Why ever Apple didn't take the opportunity to redesign this is beyond me.
However, the really BAD part is that you can't USB connect this AND charge at the same time!! On top of this the charge rate from an iMac only manages to charge the iPad VERY slowly. To charge at a decent rate you need to use the 10w adapter. A truly hopeless arrangement. Worst Apple design ever!

    Flawed

    • Written by from Dayton

Very difficult to lineup the ipad with the dock!
Another reviewer (FB from Miami) made the same comment.
I actually made a line with a red magic marker on the doc to help line them up.
    This didn't work too well.

LIke the other reviewer said -- HIT or MISS!
This can easily damage the connection on both ends.

Shame on Apple!!! How did this even get out of the drawing room?
Too busy counting their money. Corporate arrogance.

    I noticed this flaw immediately!
