AnswerNo adaptor needed! MiniDP and Thunderbolt share the same physical connector - the mini DP cable included with this monitor will work with your Thunderbolt port just fine, it will act as if it was connected to a miniDP connector See Apple Support HT5219, Point 18.

What is the differnce between the Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel) and the Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch)?

Best Answer27 Cinema Display mini display port will work with older Macs with mini display port only output. They will also work with thunderbolt Macs (as the last device in chain).
27 Cinema Display thunderbolt version will only work work when plugged into a thunderbolt port in the newer Macs.
So , if you have a new Mac with thunderbolt port , get either version.
If you have a Mac without thunderbolt port, get the old mini display port version.- Answered by Sinan K from Seattle

When connected to the Cinema Display via my MacBook Pro. Can I close the lid of my MacBook Pro?
I am thinking of buying the new Cinema Display in 2 weeks when it's pay day. But if I connect to the Cinema Display via my MacBook pro. Can I close the lid of my MacBook Pro and still use it via the Cinema Display. Otherwise I would have 2 monitors open. And that's a lot of light!?

Best AnswerYou most definitely can. You can set any external monitor to be the primary and only monitor for your MacBook Pro. Once it is connected via Mini DisplayPort and properly configured, you must close the lid and do one of three things:
1. Click a paired bluetooth mouse such as the Magic Mouse to wake it.
2. Stroke a key on a paired bluetooth keyboard to wake it.
3. Open and close the lid in one motion.
I'm always traveling, using bigger external monitors as my only display. I'll just hook it up, open and close the lid, and the screen will properly activate.
Hope that helps, friend.- Answered by Satchell D from Teaneck

Best AnswerYes, you should be able to connect your Cinema Display with mini DisplayPort connection to your new Mac Mini with Thunderbolt port. The new Thunderbolt port is backwards compatible so that it should still work with DisplayPort devices.

AnswerYes, I use an Atlona AT-HD620. I wasn't cheap but it is well built. I find that the included remote control is pretty good for flicking between the display port (MBP) and the HDMI attached PS3.

mini display port hot swapable
Can I attach my new 27" Apple monitor to my 13" Macbook Pro without turning off the power first on the laptop.
- Asked by Reg P from Victoria
- Oct 26, 2010

Best AnswerYes. Monitor connections are hot swappable. When you dis/connect a monitor, OSX will blank out the screens while it automatically adjusts to the new configuration.
Since this monitor also attaches to the MB/MBP with USB and Power, those are also hot-swappable. Obviously your laptop will run off battery power until you connect it to another power source. Also, if you have other devices attached to the monitor's USB ports, like external hard drives, they should be unmounted from the OSX desktop on the laptop first.- Answered by Jeff B from Salt Lake City

What is the difference from the thunder-bolt display and the LED Cinema Display?
- Asked by Patricia G from Grosse Pointe
- Jun 19, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerThe display, speakers, and laptop charging cable are the same for both models.
The Thunderbolt display has a higher resolution built-in camera.
The Cinema Display provides a 3-port USB 2.0 hub. This takes up one USB port on your computer.
The Thunderbolt Display connects to your computer's Thunderbolt port (make sure your Mac is Thunderbolt-equipped).
The back of the Thunderbolt Display provides the following:
- 1 Thunderbolt port
- 1 Firewire 800 port
- 1 Gigabit Ethernet port
- 3 USB 2.0 ports
Overall, the Thunderbolt Display offers significantly better connectivity for the same price as the Cinema Display, but it will only work if Mac has a Thunderbolt port. As of this writing, all Macs released in 2011 or later have Thunderbolt except for the Mac Pro (oddly enough).- Answered by Francois D from Nashua

can i use the monitor for cable television as well?
i want to use the led monitor for computer and cable television hook up. is it compatible? is there software that allows the camera to run like a security camera?

Best AnswerNo direct cable connection, but I'm sure you can look at ElGato products for that. As for allowing the use of the built in camera (or any other webcam) I use something called EVOcam. It allows you to remotely view your webcam and I believe you can save logs and images for archiving and you should be able to set it up for motion detect as well. Hope that helps.

Is anyone aware of a KVM switch that would allow a person to connect two macs (both equipped with mini displayport outputs) to this monitor?

Best AnswerYes, the Atlona AT-MDP21 2X1 Mini Display Port KVM Switch (Powerless) works great for me. I use it with a Mac Mini (server) and a Mac Pro 8 core hooked up to a 27" apple LED display using only mimi display port cables. I have a new 27: and an older one and it works great with both. Hope this helps, I had a lot of people tell me that there was no such device as well.
