1460 Questions on Which Mac is right for me?

  • Which mac would you suggest i buy?

So my PC is on its way out and it seems logical to switch over to mac. This means i'll be using it for everything; that is, browsing online and streaming, listening to the 60gb of music i have, occasionally movies, and writing etc. but also I will need it for high powered things such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro. The obvious thing i guess would be the 27" 3.2ghz for optimum power, but i also like the idea of a macbook to take it about with me. I might be willing to splash out on the 27", but would anyone recommend anything else? I wouldn't really play games, but I often have pro creative software.

  • iPad and Mac mini or MacBook

My current windows laptop is on the conk and I'm thinking of making the switch to mac. I already have an iPhone and iPad 2 and will shortly be getting Apple TV. My question is what is a better idea - Mac mini using the iPad as display and getting a mouse and keyboard or getting a MacBook? I pretty much use my laptop to produce power points and spreadsheets and a bit of web surfing/gaming. Any thoughts?

  • New Retina 13'' vs 15" for researcher using programs like Matlab or Stata

Hello to everyone! I need to invest in a new laptop that can match both my needs: portability and performance. I use to bring it with me everythere and so MBPr 13" seems to be better for me. However I'm willing to pay a little bit more (compared to the overall price) and bear a bigger dimension (... I think that the real disadvantage is the size, since it seems to be largest rather than actually heaviest in my opinion) if the 15"s stronger performance is relevant for my requirements. I will use it to work above all on software like Madlab and Stata to perform econometric algorithms; I need to install also windows on it; I want to be sure I won't need to buy a new laptop for the next 5 years. Is the 13" sufficient for me, or buying the 15" I will see the difference in performance?

    Thanks for your support!

  • will appleworks work on a macbook air?

I couldn't find an answer to this question. If I upgrade my Mac G5 to a Macbook pro or air, will the appleworks be able to work on the new computer? If not, is there a program on the new computer that will at least allow the appleworks documents to open? What should I do to not lose those documents?

Honestly Alfred, that really depends on how you will be using your Mac on a daily basis.

If you're usually always on the go, and need something to quickly give you access to the web, emails, spreadsheets, documents, PDFs, etc. the Air is a great choice. (This is not always the case by any means, but usually those who get the Air may have other computers as well, such as desktops, and just need something on the go) On the other hand, the MacBook Air is pretty great. You get the Flash Storage options, that lets the Mac wake up just like an iOS device. You get 30 days of standby time if not using the Mac, the latest Graphics from Intel, a drive that's about twice the speed of ATA drives, and all in a body less than 2.38-2.96 lbs. depending on the display you get.

Now, if you need a power house, the MacBook Pro is your answer. With it's Quad-Core iSeries processor (15-inch and 17-inch only), it is capable of doing twice the shear number crunching of the MacBook Air. If you are going to be editing video day-in and out, this is a must have. This Mac is also offered in the 13, 15, and 17-inch display models. Even if you get the 13-inch, that's still loads of power. 2.4GHz, 4GB for RAM that you can update to 8GB, and on the higher up models, you get not only one, but two graphics boost. First, is the Intel 3000 card, and you also get the (ranging from) AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB GDDR5 (base 15-inch) to the AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 (17-inch)

Bottom line, the MacBook Air is great for when on the go. Its light, ultra portable, and quite fast. But if you need the most for what you pay for, I'd recommend the Pro. It has more RAM, hard drive, display, and even graphic options. Also, you can update the Pro once you purchase it, something you can't do on the Air. (not even RAM) So if you like the freedom to alter your hard drive, RAM, later on, I'd get the MacBook Pro.

Sorry for the long response, but I do hope it helps!

  • does upgrades affect files and photos saved on current system?

I am currently on Leopard 10.5.8 and have bought the disc to upgrade to Snow leopard. Does upgrading risk any of the photos or files saved on my MAC?

    Best Answer

No, but I'd backup before the upgrade. The main thing upgrades affect are apps that may not be supported by a newer OS. Many - but not all - apps get rewritten for each OS, but sometimes you'll find one that is completely unsupported on the newer platform.

  • facetime for windows

I run 2 mac pro towers, a mc-mini, a mac book, and a single Windows 7 - can I get facetime for Windows?

  • Logic Pro 9 upgrade to next Logic Pro

I want to purchase Logic Pro 9, but I've seen rumors that the newest Logic Pro may be coming out soon. I would like to wait until the next one comes out, but no one knows when that will be. So, if I purchase Logic Pro 9 now, would I be able to just upgrade to the next version for free or for a reduced fee?

  • Macbook Pro 13 inch vs 15 inch retina for Gaming

Actually I've got now the high-end early-2011 MacBook Pro 13" with 2.7 GHz, 8Gb Ram and 1TB HD, and, (I know, that's too bad) an Intel HD Graphics 3000 videocard. I do not play a lot, but I really like playing Assassin's Creed and Brotherhood is my favorite part of it. However, I came to realize that this game (which is actually VERY demanding) is running unstably even on minimum settings (which I truly hate to use because all of the game here is right about stunning graphics) In february or may I am considering to buy a new MacBook Pro and I am wondering about which of them, usual Pro 13'', usual Pro 15" or the retina one will give me the maximum possible performance for demanding gaming (of course, it will also be smooth with regular programs). And I also want to know if the game I mentioned will REALLY be able to work in a right way on maximum settings. And also, basically, is a 15" retina worth its money vs the 15" Pro? Thanks in advance, community!!!:)

I have a retina and I play games like Starcraft 2, Heroes of Newerth, and other smaller games like Asphalt 6.

    Pros on gaming:

    - stunning 2880 * 1800 display. my SC2 and HoN gameplays are speckless. I can see every detail.
    - Ultra fast processors

    Cons on gaming:

    - overheats easily. and it buurrrnnsss when it overheats. i literally cannot put my finger on the ventilation part (above the function keys) for over five seconds cuz it is sooo hot
    - need to let it rest for 20 minutes ish at times.

other than that, the MBP retina will run games like Assassin's Creed and Brotherhood with little effort on maximum settings.

but i don't think the retina isn't worth the money. ppl say the retina really bumped up the cost, but I say it should be a couple hundred dollars cheaper. But if I were you I would get the retina - so much more better than the 15". although you don't have a CD drive and the magsafes aren't the same, the retina MBP really is the best.

Go to system preferences, mouse and check your setting for double-click. You probably have it set at maximum or 100%. Reduce your setting to about three bars from the right. Your icon should now open when you double click.

    Macbook Air:

    + Thinner
The rMBP has an empty space in the middle because it was designed to hold a large Fusion Drive, but then Apple backed out and only offered an SSD. (Discovered by iFixit.com)

    + Lighter (by 1/2 pound)

+ Battery life is better (7.5 hours vs. 6.5 hours. Measured by AnandTech.com)

= Performance is same (within 10%, which you won't notice. Measured by AnandTech.com)

    - Screen is worse

+ $400 saving (assuming both have 8 Gb memory)

Apple charges $100 extra for the Retina display in the iPad (iPad 2 vs. iPad 3/4). Is the upgrade to Retina in a Macbook worth $400 and worse portability?

  • macbook pro retina 13' or macbook air 13'

do they have anything different besides retina display?
Which one is better for gaming?

    Best Answer

    Quick answer:
The display is the major difference. There are however other minor differences, which makes the Retina a _little_ bit faster and heavier.
I think that none of them is good for gaming, because for that you need a dedicated video-card, while both of these two computers have the integrated one (you need Retina 15'' for the Nvidia graphics card).

    Detailed answer:
The details of the differences depends on how you configure your mac. Here I compare two cases.

-- If one refers to the two basic configurations, then here are the differences:

    PROCESSOR
They both have a dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache, but with two different frequenceis: Retina has 2.5GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz), Air has 1.8GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz)

    RAM
Retina has 8GB, Air has 4GB. They are both 1600MHz DDR3L

    STORAGE
    Same (128GB SSD)

    PRICE
Retina $1699, Air $1199 (On online apple store US)

-- If one instead compares the two best configurations (I mean with all the hardware options upgraded to the maximum), then here are the differences:

    PROCESSOR
They both have a dual-core Intel Core i7 with 4MB shared L3 cache, but with two different frequenceis: Retina has 2.9GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz), Air has 2.0GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz)

    RAM
    Same (8GB 1600MHz DDR3L)

    STORAGE
Retina has 768GB SSD, Air has 512GB

    PRICE
Retina $3199, Air $2199 (On online apple store US)

    -- For both configurations:

    SIZE & WEIGHT
Retina is 1.62kg (3.57 pounds), while Air is 1.35kg (2.96 pounds)
Retina has a larger height: 1.9cm vs [0.3-1.7]cm
Retina has a smaller width: 31.4cm vs 32.5cm
Retina has a smaller depth: 21.9cm vs 22.7cm

  • I have imac os x tiger, can I upgrade to os x Lion?

I have an Imac os x (tiger). I bought an ipad 2. I must upgrade. Can I do this on my old imac? What do I upgrade to, and what will it cost?

    Best Answer

You can not upgrade to Lion directly. You have to upgrade to Leopard, Snow Leopard, and then through the Mac App Store you can upgrade to Lion. Depending on the hardware you have on your computer, you might be better off purchasing a new computer. Lion requires at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor to run.
