  • Which is better for college? Macbook Pro 13' or Macbook Air 13'?

    I'll be entering college this upcoming fall and I'm majoring in Broadcast Journalism so I'll be doing a lot of school work and video editing with Final Cut. I know the Air doesn't have the CD port which is my only reason I was going to get the Pro but the Air is cheaper so that's always a better deal. As of now, I don't really care much about the price but rather which is more convenient for me. I don't know if I'll be using the port a lot or not but the majority of my use on the computer will be school work so a lot of typing, researching, etc. Also personally I'd watch a lot of movies, music, surf the web, etc, etc. When I buy the Air, will it come with the portable CD port of do I have to buy it seperately?

If you're wanting to use the higher end processor intensive applications like Final Cut, photoshop etc. (Also if you read the fine print, you'll need at least the 13 inch MacBook Pro for the new Final Cut) You probably want to have the processing power the Pro has to offer. Also bare in mind that once you get the Air is is NOT upgradable. At all. No more RAM, no hard drive upgrades. (Upgradeable for Pro (hard drive, RAM))

    Also you have to buy the Super Drive for the Air, or you can use another optical drive from another computer on the same network as the Air.
    (Google DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc for more info)

    And the MacBook Pro will also offer higher graphic options as you, if you're able, to branch out to higher end models later on (15 inch)

    I currently have the use of both retina MacBook's. I was given the 15 by my company and the 13 came up on Groupon at a bargain price that I couldn't see past. My intention was to evaluate them and sell one or the other.

    I use all the standard apps, and the most intensive stuff I use is Aperture 3 and PSE. I can honestly say the i5 in the 13 has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease with no noticeable lag in any environment.

    For my uses the 13 is more than adequate, and it is a lot easier for carrying round. Until they put a retina screen in the 11' Air, this is about the best mobile computer available.

    I've not even noticed any lag from only having 8gb ram in the 13 instead of the 16gb in the 15.

    For you though, the gaming maybe an issue. I don't have any games to run and test for you. The hd4000 is far superior to the hd3000 I last used on a 13 Pro, and I imagine for most games on medium settings it would be fine. But if you want that top notch graphics performance, you're going to need a top notch (and dedicated) GPU.

    So in short, the 13 is just about the perfect laptop for most things, but the 15 is an out and out desktop replacement.

    Currently in the market for my first Mac, and having the internal debate about which laptop to pull the trigger on.

    Debating between the 13 inch Air w 8Gb ram(maybe upgrade the processor) and the base MacBook Retina 13.

    I'm looking for portability, daily surfing, gaming specifically Blizzard products (Diablo 3, StarCraft 3, and WoW), maybe the occasional video/photo edit to take advantage of the features of a Mac.

    Reading all the different forums, some say the gaming aspects will be fine on the air(on low graphics), some say it won't... Same can be said of the Retina 13... I can't personally justify the 15 Retina although its SO nice...

    I have a mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro running a 2.53 Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of ram, and it is my daily use computer (by choice over a Dell workstation). I am in the Printing industry and I use both the current Adobe CS6 (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, etc...) as well as CAD software.

    On my off time, I also Play WOW (Mists of Pandaria) and Diablo 3. Both have to have their resolution turned way down to be playable.

    If I were in the market today, I would pay the little extra and get the
    15-inch: 2.6GHz, MacBook Pro. It's only $200 more than the retna display 13" MacBook Pro, but it has a 1GB dedicated video card + the 256 shared card. The retna display is nice, but there are only a handful of programs that can take advantage of if at this time. Just my $0.02, so take it as you will.

    I understand that the processor is the only thing I cannot upgrade, and the dual core worries me for the occasional game, I am not sure how it will go as I'm new to mac. It is necessary to get the top end retna (I'm leaning towards the retna) over the lower end as they only have a minor difference in the processors I.e. 2.5 & 2.6 with a turbo boost of 3.1 and 3.1.

    MacBook Pro, not Mac Pro.

    It uses both, if a application needs better graphics it would require the strongest which is GT650. At its base it start with 4000 HD. You can also download a third party software to change your GPU (graphic card)

    Usually laptops have two, just if you want to save money then you have a choice of buying one with integrated graphic card.

    Comparing my Macbook Air 11 vs Macbook Pro 13, I would recommend the Macbook Pro because of its more powerful 2.8 ghz processor over the Macbook Air's 1.8 ghz. It also has its own optical drive that comes in handy to burn your own music CD, play DVDs and load an occasional software. The one thing that I use my Air over my Pro model is for business trips because every ounce counts. Overall, I think you will be best off with the Pro model. If you decide to get the Air though, get 4gb of RAM because you cannot upgrade it later.

    You can always increase with external hard disk. Flash is faster, but a speed which isn't relevant for Photoshop, more for live video rendering and that kind of stuff. I guess you won't really profit of that speed for work, but may be you will of more space.

    From what you have described I would recommend the 13" Macbook Pro with 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 with the 750Gb hard drive option. Here is why, it will be much cheaper than the retina macbook pro and with far more hard drive space as the retina only has 128 Gb standard. Next you will also be able to upgrade the non retina macbook pro in the future if needed while the retina MBP is non upgradable, its how you get it from the factory. The Solid state drive in the rMBP is not worth it for what you do and the added speed is not a dealbreaker for what you will use your new laptop for. Hopefully this helps you make your decision.
