  • The Apple iPod shuffle USB Cable connects your iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation) to your computer's USB port for syncing and battery charging and to the Apple USB Power Adaptor for convenient charging from a wall socket.

    Two cables are included, both with a 3.5-mm jack on one end and a USB connector on the other. The shorter cable is the same length as the USB cable that comes with the iPod shuffle. The longer cable is perfect for connecting the iPod shuffle to the back of a desktop computer or to a power adaptor plugged into a wall socket.

No USB cable is necessary. If you want an extension cable, many USB-A to USB-A extension cables are available. Search online for "USB-A Male to USB-A Female Extension Cable."

    Apple still sells the "Apple iPod Shuffle Dock" ($29 USD) USB adapter for the 2nd generation iPod shuffle. It is not compatible with the 1st, 3rd or 4th generation iPod Shuffles. Apple does not sell a cable-only USB adapter for the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle - only the complete "dock." But you can find third party (non-Apple) USB cables for the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle online. Search for "USB cable for 2nd generation iPod Shuffle" but be careful - the cables appear identical (externally) to Apple's 3rd and 4th generation iPod Shuffle cables but are wired differently internally so are not interchangeable. Be sure you are getting the cable that is designed for the correct generation of iPod Shuffle you own.


    iPod Shuffle 1st generation = tall narrow white (only) plastic case with round clickable control pad and integrated USB-A connector.

    iPod Shuffle 2nd generation = small rectangular brushed aluminum case with round clickable control pad and integrated clip. Several colors. Sold with a USB / TRRS adapter "dock" for the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle that connects via the Shuffle's headphone jack.

    iPod Shuffle 3rd generation = tiny metal case with no external control pad and only a single external button and an integrated clip. Several colors. (volume, etc. controls were built into the headphone cable). Sold with a USB to TRRS adapter cable (3rd/4th generation iPod Shuffle USB cable) that plugs into headphone jack.
