    Abysmal.

The tremendous two feet of cord provided would easily be enough to meet anyone's needs, unless they happen to own a recent Mac laptop. You see, in a stunning display of carelessness, Apple decided to place all USB ports on the left side of their laptops, giving the user about eight inches of usable cord. You can always run the cord under the laptop if you don't mind the inevitable wobble that will occur every time you try to actually use your computer. The scroll ball is an abomination. It's just an awful idea that has been poorly executed. The "touch sensitive shell" only recognizes right clicks when you deliberately take the time to think about where you will placing your fingers, and even then it doesn't always work. I don't even know where to start with unnecessary and, quite frankly, useless side buttons. Anytime I try to use them, I have to squeeze the mouse so hard that it registers as a left-click. Even now, I am now being forced to use a stack of paper as a mouse pad because even the slight discoloration of wood grain throws off the "precision optical sensor", which the website assures me does not require a mouse pad. Overall, a saddening amount of money, resources, time, and labor went into making this travesty.

    Scroll mechanism fails

I have had three Apple optical scroll wheel mice, two wireless and one USB. In a 16 month period, all three have developed the same malfunction: the scroll wheel will not scroll vertically in both directions. I could either scroll up or scroll down, but not in both directions. This problem has been previously reported bo other reviewers and is apparently quite common. While I am biased toward Apple products in general, this one is a dud.

I've never written a review before but felt I had to share my experience with others.

I stumbled across the other reviews as I was on the Apple Store to buy a new mouse as I had become fed up with the rollerball sticking. I could scroll up but down was a no go and had been for weeks/months. I was so glad I read the reviews before wasting £40 on a new one!

There are a few suggested solutions for cleaning the ball however I went for the multi surface disposal cleaning wipe solution (as I already had the wipes under the sink!). I unplugged the mouse and rolled the ball back and forth along the cloth and after no time at all, the mouse is as good as new - albeit smelling with a hint of lemon!

With the rollerball sorted and an easy solution at hand, I'd give the mouse 5 stars. The ball does clog with the moisture and oil from your hand and I've now learned regular cleaning is required. I agree with other posters that the lead is short however that suits me as I have the keyboard with the mouse USB port at the right hand side. If you are looking for a mouse that requires a longer lead, I would suggest looking at something else.

Many thanks to the earlier posters whose efforts saved me money! :-)

Good at being a mouse, but flawed.

For one thing, this mouse is quite overpriced at essentially 50 dollars (for a wired mouse? Really?). It doesn't have a solid feel in the hand, since it is plastic and weighs nearly nothing. It hardly matches with the recent Apple build-quality aesthetic.

The ball is cool since it allows you to scroll 360º, but it's so small that it takes irritatingly long to scroll through long documents.

The absolute worst part is that if you try using this with a Macbook that doesn't have a standalone keyboard, you're out of luck. The cord is short to make it look like desk candy, but it prevent right-handed users (ie most of the world) from simply using the mouse with their computer. Huge oversight/laziness on the part of the designers.

If you're a prepress mac operator, designer or do anything on a Mac for a living do not rely on this mouse. Keep a back up! I'm going to assume that most of us on here fall into this category and that we all need the precision on a wired mouse. I've taken mine apart multiple times and keep canned air in my desk just because I own this mouse. So on top of the $50 add a supply of canned air to that price.

I'm going to pick up a cheap Logitech LS1 because I know it will be there for me when I need it. Buyer Beware!

I Can't Use the Apple Mouse

    • Written by from Delphos

I had to switch to a PC mouse because the Apple mouse has a fat rear that sticks up against the back of your hand. It applies pressure to the base of my thumb that makes it really sore. I really dislike the design of the Apple mouse. If you have small hands, you probably wouldn't like it, either.

    COMPLETELY WORTHLESS!!!!!

I bought a new Apple desktop computer a couple of months ago and found myself going back to the store because the scrolling button on the mouse stopped working. They tested it in the store and it started working again. So, I took it home and it worked for about a month. Now the scrolling ball will not scroll down. It never really scrolled horizontally!!! So, back to the Apple store I go with this WORTHLESS GARBAGE!!! I'm UPSET beyond words, but take some solace in knowing I'm not alone. Apple should take this junk off the market.

    Works Great

I have been using my mouse for close to 4 years now. Although I do have both types, the wireless for my laptop and the wired for my desktop, I prefer it to the wireless as it has more of the functions that I want for work. I clean it, and my keyboard, once every few months with a disinfecting wipe and find that to be enough to keep them both working smoothly and effectively. I don't find that the ball gums up as others say, all of my functions continue to work and work well. After 4 years of use 8 hours per day 5 days a week I think this product is well worth the money and beats any other mouse I have used over my extensive office experience.

    Not that great

    • Written by from Coffs Harbour Jetty

The mouse ball is wonderful - great idea, great implementation (although the scroll-down issue is annoying, but a drop of water and rub with tissue always fixed this).

Consistent right clicking is nigh on impossible. If you need right mouse for anything frequent - games, 3d applications, or use this with Windows, then this is NOT the mouse for you. To right click under windows you cannot have any other part of your hand touching the mouse, and you have to press far up and to the right - around the edge - to register the right click.

It feels like it should be a great mouse, but isn't.

    Scroll Ball Is FINE

I've been using this mouse for about four years now and never had a problem with the scroll ball, it's called cleaning your mouse. I just clean it with a small towel after I've dried my hands, obviously the ball will stop working if you constantly use it with dirty hands, but It's only a quick clean away from working.

    Needs Improvement

It starts working fine with ease, simplicity & beauty as promoted, but that starts fading away after a while & there's nothing one can do about it. The most annoying problem is the scrolling. Maybe it's because we the Apple customers consider your products to be excellent or flawless, but I went ahead & bought the same mouse even when the first one failed, yet the same happened again. I need a third mouse at this moment.

    Problematic scroll ball

    • Written by from San Diego

The scroll ball becomes dirty easily and once dirty won't scroll. Cleaning is possible, but time consuming, difficult and unreliable. I spend around 20 minutes every day cleaning the scroll ball and today the ball still won't scroll up.

Once my new mouse arrives, I'm going to smash this mouse with a bat, drive over it with a car, set it on fire and nuke the remains.

    Take it off the market!

Judging by the echoes in these reviews of my own experience with this mouse I think it is time for Apple to admit they have a less-than-acceptable product here and should do a favor for all of us who prefer a wired mouse to the wireless and pull this one off the market and design and build a better mouse (trap, unnecessary).

    Smashed Mine Against A Wall

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

this mouse is a total piece of garbage. The scroll ball inevitably gets gunked up and is not possible to clean. Unofficially, you can pry the mouse open and clean it, but you void your warranty and stand a good chance of destroying the mouse in the process.

Way to make me pay $75 for the "magic" mouse after wasting $55 on this one.

    Not worth the price

    • Written by from Boise

While this mouse does have a few interesting ideas in button functionality, it's a pain to actually use for any extended period and has several other glaring flaws. The cord is much too short, the scroll ball is difficult to properly use in any extent, and any kind of extended use makes the fingers hurt quite a bit because of how small and poorly shaped it is. The optical LED sensitivity leaves quite a lot to be desired, and accuracy takes a nosedive at anything about the default, extremely slow setting. While I appreciate the attempts at innovation, it's punishing for any power user and hardly worth the $50 price tag.

VERY BAD! - expensive, unreliable and cable ridiculously short

I admire Apple tremendously and we have two MacBooks and I have an iPhone - all of which are great but having recently bought the mighty mouse for my new Macbook - I would completely agree with the other negative feedbacks here, basically: EXPENSIVE, UNRELIABLE AND CABLE RIDICULOUSLY SHORT!

Recommendation: Buy something else (I'm choosing one of the better looking conventional mice, which is incidentally 1/3 of the price)
