    Potentially useful

    The card-scanning software is poor; its redeeming quality is that the original card is saved as a picture which transfers to address book, so the mistakes the software makes can be corrected at a later time and the original card is there for future reference; I find it useful when you have many cards to digitize (say 50); you just let the scanner do its job possibly with errors, and you can devote your time to doing something else. Scanning pdf's, however, is good.

    The actual scanner is small and I use it when I travel, it even fits inside your carry-on.

    It is a pity also that it does not seem to scan pictures to high-quality jpg's, just to pdf's.

    Fair Scanner

    I don't get why people are so negative about this scanner. Most of the issues I've read are operator-related. Feed the sheet/receipt/card in straight, and you'll have a pretty good result. Also, If you only want the contact info from the card, you can read graphic text better than the scanner can guess, so enter it yourself!

    Positives:

    + 600 DPI for such a small scanner is fantastic;

    + software reads text fairly accurately;

    + Despite it's name, it scans more than just receipts;

    + simple user interface (frustrating for control freaks like me);

    + super compact, super portable, AND it runs off USB power only.

    Negatives:

    - software provided does not include an edit-before-save feature which was very frustrating. It assumes what area you want cropped, and doesn't provide a preview of the document before it's imported.

    - scanner is very sensitive to being fed "just right". Get a few degrees off on your alignment, and it's goodbye straight scans.

    - software is required to be installed to use the scanner.

    - what is up with having to register the scanner software?

    Neat receipts needs refinement

    • Written by from Atlanta

    Overall this is a good idea but poor execution. I wanted to love this product but I can't just yet.

    Pros- Software has a mac like simplicity and allows flexibility in how to classify receipts, contacts, and documents in categories the user defines. Great plus.

    Cons- Software has trouble importing business cards and recognizing them as such, routinely misclassifying them as receipts, or misclassifying receipts as documents. Changing the classification is not a big deal for me but really the scanner/software combo should be able to easily ID biz cards as such due to their recognizable size.

    OCR is inconsistent, routinely misclassifying text fields. Not much value to the OCR if I have to reenter the data into their proper fields myself.

    The killer problem to me is that the scanner has difficulty with document alignment. Apparently there are not enough rollers spaced evenly enough and working in sync to move a document through the scanner at exactly the same pace so that it is aligned. The result is that documents get skewed at slight angles. Adding to the problem is that there is not a way to rotate and crop the resulting image in degrees other than 90, 180, 270 degrees from the original scan- which really limits the effectiveness of doing rotation. The product needs to be able to rotate a document on a 1-5 degree basis so that it can be cropped better (or fix the roller issue). My scanned documents don't have to be perfectly aligned, but give me some options other than 90, 180, 270 degrees. That shouldn't be too hard to do.

    There is some flexibility in scanning settings but there needs to be more (e.g. maybe low quality black and white for receipts but higher quality color for documents).

    Neat keep refining your software product.

    It seems to work for me

    • Written by from bear

    I am stunned by all of the negative comments on this product. However, I probably only use mine once per month so may not be the best source of feedback. Having said that, it does in fact "hang" and forces me to reboot periodically. Annoying but not a deal breaker. You do have to use some care in feeding your documents or you will get an unreadable image. Again, annoying but not tragic. I have not had any reason to call NEAT for support but I assume they are horrible given the other reviews. I will say that the one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to alphabetize my file cabinet. It appears that I am expected to do this manually. I assumed that there would be one button for this but I haven't found it yet. I have used the product for a year not and still haven't been able to figure that one out. Given all of that, I have in fact ended the life long habit of having boxes and boxes of receipts sitting at my home. That in itself made this a worth while purchase. 3 out of 5 stars since it does fail at times but I am glad I bought it
