    Tough to use.

    I'm no techie, nor am I a neophyte, but I find this scanner to be an overpriced pain in the a**. It is totally non-intuitive, often opens on a page with no obviously discernible way to get out of it. NOT recommended!

    Neat - Crash all the time

    I'm an IT engineer. I run a business where I need to scan checks and receipts. I spend more time changing settings and troubleshooting that producing. Please stay away from it.

    Nice concept does not deliver

    I have had Neat for just over a year. I have spent more time trouble shooting than actually using the machine productively. It is just one bug after the other. It doesn't scan receipts, it doesn't sync. The files are easily corrupted and shut down the program.
    Bottom line, I am going back to my old paper filing system. In the end, I know where to find the receipts and I don't have to worry about not being unable to retrieve when needed.

    Broke after 14 months

    I like the portability, but that was it. Small receipts and business cards were tricky at times. They would pull through at angles and bunch up on the sides.

    I could not figure out the software. It did not seem intuitive at all. Seemed like they tried too hard to do too much, so nothing was simple.

    After 14 months the scanner no longer scans. Documents go through it, and it sound like it is scanning, but my computer just says no image.

    Over experience was disappointing.

    Wasting so much time with this thing

    I agree with the negative reviews. The Neat scanner is overhyped and does not live up to advertising claims. It frequently hangs up during the "analyzing" process prompting me to have to follow tech support's advice to go into Mac library to delete files, recreate folders, do app reload, etc. Have to calibrate frequently. When it does analyze, the character recognition is terrible, even on document types that it's read previously. All in all, I have wasted far too much time & money and wish I would have chosen differently. Cannot in good conscience recommend this for purchase.

    After 6 years of use, this a 1 star at best product

    I purchased neat receipts in 2008 and have invested time and money to make it work; but, I am now using it to just dump and store. Here are my chief issues:
    The Support is seriously lacking, they truly do not know customer support, and pass the buck to someone else.
    The software updates are buggy - right now, the software gets stuck at the 'analyzing' and 'working' stages - you have to force quit the application, then open to get things done.
    Creating custom reports - forget it! it is not worth the trouble - save yourself time and don't even bother with this.
    Lastly, the user community has provided great ideas, and I yet to see them implement any of those salient ideas.
    I just finally decided to look at some other piece of application.
    lastly, don't buy from the kiosk at airport - they are not knowledgeable enough to understand the needs of a road warrior, and they just say 'yes' it does it.. Trust me.. NO NO NO.. if your a mac user, avoid it.. save yourself 6 years of work arounds ..

    Scanner works.... ok.... most of the time... however CONSTANTLY needs re-calibrating. The software on the other hand is the worst piece of KRRAP I have on my system (and I have a TON of software).

    I has been over 10 minutes since I tried to launch the soft. and it is still loading. This happens all the time. Also, the software tries to access internet every time you launch and further delays the launch. I am really pizzed off that I paid so much for this and I spend half the time fighting with the software just to launch!

    I had time to do a google search, read this forum and write this review and the software is still "loading". If the software engineer was close by I would SLAP HIM!

    The software finally launched after 15 MINUTES!!!! (it took me that long to finish my review because I had to "clean it up" ha ha)

    Constantly crashing

    I am running version 4.0.3 and have a yearly subscription to neat cloud which is worthless since the software crashes-constantly! My scanner works fine, but is absolutely worthless with the software. Wish it worked as claimed.

    Terrible Software

    I agree with the other recent negative posts. I just recently got a Neat scanner to try to cut down on paper in my office. I typically leave my computer on in sleep mode and everyday I need to kill the Neat software and unplug the machine to get it to communicate. Very often I have to reboot my entire MAC to get it to work. This is horrible!

    Horrible, do not buy!

    This is the worst piece of equipment that I have purchased in a while. I'm getting ready to go buy a new scanner because this one is just useless. Especially ever since the last "update". It can never get the type of document right. It takes forever to do anything, especially once it has a few receipts saved. It scans fast but then it takes FOREVER to classify the type of document and in the meanwhile it doesn't let you do anything else! you have to wait until it has finished classifying the scans to move on. If you have nothing to do and can sit around for hours just to scan a few documents then this is for you!

    This software is inconsistent.

    The "Analyzing" process in the software version 4.0.3 (403153) is taking forever. It used to let you scan one page after another. I'm behind a stack of paper now and I feel like I now need to wait until the next version of the software to be able to scan again. I can't go back to an older version of the software, because the 4.0.3 software asked me to upgrade my database. The older version won't read my new database. Aarrrgh! Frustrating.

    Software buggy.

    The software is buggy, constantly hangs (not responding) or quits, hardware is not upgradeable. Some of the document limits (size or length) are not realistic to the real world. (Programmers must be living in a bubble) Sometimes it recognizes a document (receipt) the next time the same document from the same company/store it does not recognize.

    Waste of money. Waste of time. Total waste! Software does not work. Not as advertised. Customer service at Neat is useless. Downloads are less than useless. Money thrown out. Maybe it will make a good door stop. Sits in the closet collecting dust. Do not buy this product.

    We have a Macbook Retina Pro. Returned NeatReceipt as fast as I could. Seemed like the software was outdated for our computer. Very disappointed, but will look for a more compatible scanner.

    Great Concept - Poor Operation

    The Neat scanner is a wonderful idea - but if I didn't own it, I wouldn't buy it.
    It refuses to consistently work with a MacMini - every other time the application is started, I have to turn off and on the scanner, exit out of the application, and restart - sometimes 4 or 5 times in a row just to scan 1 single receipt

    The Neat support people have no answer - they say it "is what it is"

    So don't buy the Neat scanner - cause "it isn't what it is supposed to be"

    Product Continues Downward Spiral

    Hardware is great, software needs a revamp.
    Updates turn back into the stone age. You'd be better off taking a picture of your receipts and store them in a folder. It can't even do that in a simple way.

    Why would a company make PC & Mac but force you to buy the software for both platforms, and then not make them compatible? And charge you $80 for a useless already overpriced item....

    Don't waste your money on this until NEAT cleans up their software.

    Obnoxious DRM hampers otherwise descent product

    This would be a good product, and one that I would recommend, but the company that makes it has some kind of extreme paranoia about piracy, and I am constantly confronted by having to re-register or enter some 20-character serial number or upgrade to the spy-ware (cloud) version, or some other assumption that the user is a criminal until they prove themselves otherwise for a few uses.

    Very poor document management

    I bought this product as an answer to my addiction of keeping every single receipt I ever got since 2000. I have multiple boxes full of receipts and for my birthday I wanted to treat my self to this scanner. I thought it was going to make my life much easier, just scan away and the program will take care of recognizing and organizing the receipts into different folders and voilà! Job done. After months of procrastination I decided to open and install the scanner, used 10 receipts as a test and let me tell you.. It took me close to an hour or more to scan them properly, all of them came out crooked and had to re scan, hold each receipt until the very end so it wouldn't move. When scanned already I had to crop and adjust every single one and the system took the wrong information from 8 out of 10 receipts including date, amount, and institution. I had to manually change them and the whole idea of a savior scanner just crumbled in front of my eyes. It was a lot of work and didn't live up to my expectations. Not worth it for me, luckily the Mac store reimbursed me with a store credit that was later used to buy an IPad. Much better choice :)

    Not tough enough.

    Do not buy this.
    It's simply not tough enough, being made of flimsy plastic, and while we're talking about looks, the machine also looks cheap and toy-like to say the least.

    Without restating other reviewers comments, the gist of them is that the selling point of their software is just plainly flaky and inefficient. In the end you waste more time dealing with software flaws, than getting down to the actual job in hand; a sure sign of a bad and ill-conceived product!

    As a hint, in the end I bought the more expensive Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M. This is the best (affordable) model of ScanSnap to go for, coming with a CCD sensor (many others, inc. other ScanSnap range ones, have less good CIS sensor type).
    Yes, more expensive, and doesn't come with separate software, but integration with workflow works well anyway, it also scans EVERYTHING efficiently and more quickly than any others (hence it's the market leader product accordingly). Excel can do most of the filing of field info.

    If NeatReceipts software worked as well as Devonthink, or just had better Evernote integration (many use this), it would meet half the battle (or even generally, just better Finder/Path Finder filing system help for the moment, until some other cloud solutions come along).

    In summary, NeatReceipts is not a "concept" I can be bothered to have in my life!

    Not Neat

    I could rate this product if it worked, you can't give something 0 stars so it got 1... downloaded the software and then spent 2 weeks trying to get it to work. When it did actually scan BEWARE a lot of the information was corrupted/incorrectly read. Needed to review every receipt manually against the scanned information to ensure there were no errors. The tax man does not accept an excuse that it's my scanner/ neat receipts fault. Good idea but so seriously flawed that I'm now happy to enter my receipts into my accounting software the 'old fashioned way", it saves me time comparatively.
