Quicken 2007 for Mac - no problemo!

    Written by MM from Brownsville

    Dec 13, 2009

I am retired and have used Quicken in different versions for over 10 years. I use it for all household expenses, payments, records, etc. But the managing of $$ in the portfolio window in various investment accounts is the primary benefit for me. Data is easy to enter, though some trial and error is necessary to work out the best way to do things. Data can be entered directly into account registers.. neat, fast! User guide, like most, is tersely written and assumes some knowledge of accounting, but with careful reading, going step by step, it works! I never got another book for it; just used the User Guide. Year-to-year expenses comparison in all categories is great! You can really see where the money goes! Quote downloads have been much improved this year. Minor upgrades occasionally. AOK!

    So Sad

    Written by ED from Chicago

    Dec 5, 2009

This year I switched over to Mac from PC and had to purchase this product if I wanted to keep being able to use Quicken to do my family finances. I am devastated that this product is nowhere near the original PC version. In addition to all of the rigmarole you have to go through to import your data, the interface is sparse, not user friendly, and ultimately, one of my banks didn't support the Mac version, so I couldn't download my transactions from my bank into this version. Needless to say, I'm not using it anymore. I'm looking for some other financial software for macs. In the meantime, I am suffering...

The Upgrade Process From Quicken 2004-Quicken 2007

    Written by AT from Grantham

    Oct 24, 2009

I'm no computer wizard. I'm a senior citizen who came to computers later in life and came to Mac only 6 years ago. I use my Quicken for simple financial work--checks, expense reports, etc. I just did the upgrade from Quicken 2004 to Quicken 2007 in about 10 minutes and everything was there just as it was before the upgrade. Unless I've missed something, this was the easiest upgrade I've ever done. If Quicken 2007 does for me what Quicken 2004 did for me, I'll be ecstatic. And the icing on the cake is that I'll be able to move it to my new iMAC effortlessly.

    AWEFUL

This is the worst piece of software I have ever used. It took me weeks to migrate and reconcile hundreds of duplicated transactions. I manually reconciled every account.
If that wasn't enough, it would constantly fail to record transactions to the correct accounts and screwed up my balances. Try Moneydance.

Don't bother with Quicken for Mac

    Written by RG from Levittown

Been a Quicken user for PC for almost 4 years now. Recently switched to a Mac to get away from Windows. Stay AWAY from the Mac version. Importing is like being stuck in a 10 mile backup in rush hour traffic, it's 95 degrees, your AC just went down and you have sprung a leak in your radiator. Migrating data from PC to Mac version is a nightmare, some things won't migrate, won't open, aren't recognized - I am now missing 10 hours of my life. In the end, the (1) simple feature I liked on the PC version - on the Calendar view you could see recent transactions, future transaction and the daily balance (no one wants an overdraft), and the Mac version from Intuit does not have it. There is a Calendar, it will show the description of the transaction (double click to see amount), but no daily balance. Intuit is really dragging their heels here. Hoping the Mac 2010 version is better but right now - not holding my breath.

This product is far inferior to the PC version. Quicken for Mac 2010 (formerly known as Financial Life for Mac) had better be worth the wait.

    This product is a dog!

Written by LB from San Francisco

I recently switched from a PC to a Mac and have been a Quicken for Windows user since the mid 90's. Importing your Quicken Windows data into the Mac version is a nightmare as is setting up direct connect online downloading with your financial institutions. I ultimately returned the product for a refund and reinstalled the Windows version on my Mac using Parallels Desktop. This works well, by the way.

This almost ruined my Mac experience as well. I thought the old days of Mac products being "second fiddle" to the PC version was over, but I guess not at Intuit.

    Quicken for Mac

    Written by KP from SMITHTOWN

    Aug 30, 2009

I recently switched to using a Mac and like my computer very much and wanted to continue managing my finances. I have been a long time Quicken user so when I found out that Quicken 2007 for Mac existed I purchased it immediately. I love it! All future Quicken versions from 2008 and newer that run on Windows have functions and features that I don't need. Quicken 2007 for Mac is like Quicken 2007 Basic for Windows at least it does to me. It allows me to keep track of my balances, reconcile accounts, download transactions, tell me when bills are due or are overdue and remind me when I over draw on accounts, and produces lists, graphs and/or charts showing my spending habits. I give Quicken for Mac 4 stars because it is missing an account bar on the left side. I guess insights replaces the account bar, but I would activate an account bar if Quicken for Mac had one. Another reason I give it 4 stars is the program is missing the cash register sound when entering transactions. I am visually impaired so I know that the transaction is entered when the sound chimes. It is a minor gripe, but one I can live without. All in all it is a great program. If you use the basic features like I do and want to use a Mac to manage your finances get Quicken 2007 for Mac.

Horrible Product ... Use Quicken for Windows and Boot Camp

    Written by TL from Dunwoody

    Aug 23, 2009

I could live with the more basic look compared to Quicken for Windows if it worked, but it doesn't.

I spent hours/days exporting my Quicken for Windows accounts one by one and importing into Quicken for Mac. I would say 5% of the transactions had some problem that had to be re-entered. When I downloaded transactions from my top 3 bank it failed to download half the transactions and wouldn't allow me to try again.

What a nightmare, almost made me regret buying a Mac in the first place.

How to make PC Software Look Good

    Written by JC from Scottsdale

    Aug 19, 2009

Quicken for Mac 2007 is nothing at all like its PC counterpart, even as bizarre as that can be at times. This was written for Macs a couple of generations back and wasn't very good at the time but Intuit has failed repeatedly to replace it with the "new version" which they have been talking about for four years now. This program opens windows all over the place, cannot look at accounts as a group in any kind of a meaningful way and can't import from banks and accounts from which the PC version can. Almost everything is: go to the website, find the account, download the updates, open the file, import. It's almost faster to do it all manually. This product has only very limited cross-account capability to look at transactions and categories in different accounts as one grouping. Scrolling doesn't even work!

Where this really gets to me is the crazy way it reconciles accounts. Hit reconcile and it may be an easy process or it may plunge you into two hours of trying to outwit the reconciliation feature to get your account back to the correct balance figure. Once reconciled to specific dates, you can't re-reconcile after fixing the "fixes" it adds. I once had it add a six-figure "fix" to an account which was not only wrong but hilarious. I took it out and the account would no longer reconcile. Hours later I found it had double-imported a whole string of transactions from three years earlier.

This product was NOT written for the Intel platform and those planning to migrate to Snow Leopard will have a choice to make. If you want to run this product you will need to have Snow Leopard re-install Rosette just to support this program. Apple is making Rosetta optional for this very reason but the idea is to move on and free up that space if it is possible and practical to do so.

The ongoing goofiness of the program plus Intuit's four years of pushing back their new version (now set for release in February (which I don't believe)) and the approach of Snow Leopard make this a real antique. There are better choices out there at better prices. Buying this is a bit like looking for accessories for a first generation iPod. You can do it, but why?

    Extremely Disappointing

    Written by CR from Sterling

    Aug 16, 2009

After using Quicken since 1992, I converted to Mac and bought this despite the poor review below. Even with low expectations, I managed to be disappointed. It is clunky, not intuitive, has odd quirks (dare I call them bugs?). In an effort to spare myself frustration, I didn't even try to migrate my years' worth of data, but simply started anew. Still, I met with frustration as this version of Quicken has a very poor interface with banks for direct downloading of financial transactions. The sad thing is that I was eager to leave Quicken for Windows as it was getting overly complex and suffering from trying to be all things to all people, getting away from being a simple financial tracking and planning program, with the result that its usability suffered tremendously. Now, I am concluding that the entire Quicken line seriously needs a reboot. This is a market niche aching to be filled by a competitor.

Mac version much inferior to Windows version

    Written by CM from Sammamish

    Aug 7, 2009

After using Quicken for Windows for over 10 Years I purchased the Mac version for my new iMac.
After weeks of frustration and several support calls I gave up on it, installed a Windows OS and went back to the Quicken for windows version (Which I like a lot!).
-Categories do not transfer well and are mostly not recognized in autofill.
-Investment tracking is a nightmare. The cash balances are impossible to correct properly and the downloads from financial institutions always seem to have errors.
-Intuit's support was slow and generally unhelpful. They really do not seem to care about problems with the Mac version.
A bad version of an otherwise great product.

    Shamless repackage

    Written by VJ from Chicago

    Jul 28, 2009

Quicken is a great program, but the difference from 2003 Mac version to he 2007 Mac version is just a shameless repackage.

The fact that Quicken stopped letting you update your stocks once 2007 version was out is the only reason to upgrade and quite frankly that's a lousy way to keep customers loyal.

The one and only new feature on this program is to add transaction to your iCal or have a widget for making quick transactions.

Completely bogus and I'll be switching programs very soon.

    USELESS

Written by RL from LOS ANGELES

    Jul 24, 2009

My Quicken needs are not too sophisticated and it is still useless to me. I finally got my data transferred only to find out that I could only sort my registers by Date and Check Number. How hard would it have been to allow people to sort on any column?
I decided that it would be more effective to just record transactions in an Excel Spreadsheet. I cannot believe they have the nerve to sell this product.

    Not so bad.

    Written by DW from Richmond

    Jul 18, 2009

I am a new mac user and I have been looking for financial software to replace Microsoft Money. I was scared to try Mac Quicken after reading all the horrendous reviews on how terrible it is. Well I downloaded trials of all the software I could find and didn't like ANY of them, so I ordered a copy of Mac Quicken 2007.

I have only had it a couple of days, but after getting all my information in the program, and it downloaded all my IRA information for me from Schwab and Fidelity, I just don't see where it is that bad? What is the problem? Do people want Quicken to deposit money into their accounts for them?

No it isn't quite what I am used to in using MS Money and I never used the Windows version of Quicken, but I don't see why all the negative reviews on this software? It will track my assets and generate reports which is I need it to do anyway. For me, it seems to be the best financial software available for the Mac. Maybe I am missing something somewhere? Granted, it could be little easier to set up and use, but it does seem to do what I need it to do.

Perhaps it deserves only 4 stars, but I am giving it 5 because of all the bad wrap it has been getting here. Perhaps someone can be more specific as to what problems they are having?

    never again

    Written by DS from Chicago

    Jul 18, 2009

I used Quicken for several years and this version is a step backward. In general, I find downloading information difficult, account setup is insufficiently detailed, account types do not reflect some real types that have peculiar features (e.g., student loans), and worst, I have had two corrupted files in as many years. I will not use a Quicken for Mac product ever again. Not worth the risk.
