    Superstar versus half a star

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Ok I stole that from the Longest Yard but thats not the point, this cover stinks, hard. At first its all shiny and new and red and pretty (and dont forget its $79), and yeah it seems like a good idea when the purchase of it is being financed by your firm's tech stipend but here I am about a year later and this hot mess of a cover is falling apart at the seams! No literally at the seams, its getting unglued all around the edges basically the front of the cover separating from the back. Its becoming super flimsy, the magnetic closure doesnt work nearly as well and it stretched out so much so that my ipad is actually falling out of it every chance it gets (actually falling on the floor once and getting dented on its side which is the exact type of ridiculousness this cover is designed to protect against). My husband bought some cheapo cover on amazon for $20 and its lasted him nearly 3 years and still going strong (oh yeah and his ipad doesnt have any dents in it). Do yourselves a favor and save the $79 for something more important, Apple is a rip off...there I said it...oh and Mac stinks...take that all you apple fanatics, I HATE my MacBook Pro! I am NOT a convert and in fact I joyfully look forward to going to work every day and using my PC so there MEH!!!

    Cover is all it does!

    • Written by from Anerley

    1st, love my new ipad!
    2nd wish I'd got a different cover.
The cover covers the ipad and closing the lid sends the ipad to sleep, fine.
The cover fails to lock firm enough to touch the screen without the ipad falling over in one position and is to low the other way to allow easy typing. Eg at the moment it's propped up on a small 2 1/2 " heigh box to type this.
If I could I would return it !
If you want a cover fine, but if you want to get some work done don't forget a small box !!!

    Miss the four-fold

    • Written by from Hong Kong

    The good

    - great looks and good manufacturing standard
    - metal hinge gone (subject to me replacing a previous one) so this one will last longer

    The BIG bad

    - three fold doesn't make sense. Please change back to four fold

    Reasons:

    1. I don't want the micro-fiber to expose all times (catch dirt, etc)
    2. Micro-fiber fold out, difficult to grip with my hands as fold WAY TOO BIG
    3. Can't fold into a stack like the previous one
    4. Doesn't stay attached to the back, so reading like a book with two hands you're constantly fiddling with the cover at the back
    5. Micro-fiber in, it is possible to grip with my hands but it's not stable. I usually fold it micro-fiber in, to protect it and then it fails eventually (only magnet hold it laterally).

So basically, I will buy a four-fold air cover the minute it's out on the market.

    Works well and as advertised.

    • Written by from New York

I just upgraded from an iPad 2 with a Smart Cover to an iPad Air with the new Smart Cover. I went through 2 iPad 2 Smart Covers due to hinge wear where the metal meeting the plastic.

Like the new non-exposed metal design of this one, connection and magnets work as well if not better. I haven't experienced the stability or cover alignment problems that others have (Apple'e exchange policy is great if you do). Seems to stand up well for viewing and is fine in the hand. Magnets work well and cover, on/off control works fine too. I think this is the best solution for weight to screen protection. The red color goes great with the white iPad.

Air Smart Cover is less smart

    • Written by from Pacifica

I'm also very disappointed with the new tri-fold smart cover after my fourfold ipad 3 cover. It doe not function as a sturdy stand any more, nor can the folded "triangle" be gripped as a casual handle for the open iPad like the old fourfold cover could, because the fourth fold was needed to overlap the first fold and keep the triangle from collapsing when gripped. I feel so strongly I will search for another cover solution and probably return this cover. I would even have preferred that Apple keep the wider bezel and form factor of the earlier iPads than lose the fourfold stand functionality.

    Nice colour. That's it.

I miss the four fold or my iPad2 cover. This new three fold cover is flimsy and does not stay out hewn you use the fold to prop up the iPad.

    Looking for a new cover.

Not magnetic & doesn't line up correctly.

    • Written by from Minneapolis

My (Product)red cover doesn't align with the rear of my iPad Air when open, nor does it adhere to the back via the magnets. So while I love the red, I could use with stronger magnets and a cover that doesn't slip around.

Though, it covers the screen well, protecting it from scratches when closed. For that alone, I give it two stars.

Despite other reviews, I think it's better than the last gen Smart Cover.

    • Written by from lynnwood

I had the Smart Cover for my ipad 3 and now the new one for my Air. I believe the new one is actually a better design.

The spine is better.. but doesn't look as cool as the metal one. This new spine locks much more positively and is near impossible for it to unintentionally move it around. It is also easier to attach to the ipad.

The magnets are stronger in every area, this keeps the cover shut more strongly, and it actually now keeps the cover slightly connected against the back when open!

The new tri-fold design is great as well. (You have to fold it so the microfiber faces out or it does not work). When done properly it is a very strong typing and viewing stand.

Don't expect this to protect your ipad from a drop and please don't write a bad review saying it provides bad drop protection. This cover is purely for people that never drop their device (yes we exist) and want something that works as a stand, is very light, and will protect the screen when placed in a backpack or something.

Cover closes well but stand option is gone

    • Written by from Montevideo

The magnets in this cover hold it tightly to the iPad as others have already commented. Since the iPad air isn't as wide, they should have narrowed the folds in the cover. Due to the large folds, the 'stand' functionality of past covers is no longer functional. Apple should fix these and replace them. For $39 I expected the same product as I have with my iPad 2.

    Works perfectly

Great fit and finish. All leather all around. Yes, so the cover flaps a bit, not a big issue because the Air is light enough not to have to fumble with it. It's pricey, but well made and I needed something to keep my new iPad in pristine condition.

Good, but not as good as last generation

    • Written by from Victor

The cover works relatively well, but doesn't offer very much protection. I am typing this on my second iPad Air because I dropped the first one. The cover slid off and the screen smashed...
Also, it's disappointing that they no longer make the cover in leather.
On the upside, it looks nice, keeps the screen clean and free of light scratches while maintaining the thin and light feel of the device.

    Nice cover

    • Written by from Reading

Works great as a cover and as a stand when typing on the screen. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it isn't particularly stable when holding the iPad vertical. Any kind of tap rocks the device, and I have already knocked it over a couple of times.

Doesn't align properly on iPad Air

    • Written by from Minnetonka

When I put the Smart Cover on the iPad it does not line up correctly.
It overhangs the iPad at the top by 2mm and the iPad is exposed at the bottom by the same amount. Seeing reports by several others with the same issue on support discussions.

Perfect companion to the iPad Air

    • Written by from San Antonio

I love how they redesigned the side where the magnets hold the cover to the iPad. On my iPad 3's (PRODUCT) RED leather Smart Cover the side was metal, but the new iPad Air Smart Cover has the same soft material as the cover itself. No need to worry about scratching the metal anymore.

Other than that, this cover works the same - propping the tablet up for easy typing or watching a movie. It also still automatically sleeps/wakes the iPad when covered/uncovered. The soft back of the cover does a great job keeping the screen protected when sliding in and out of a backpack or luggage.

My only complaint is the color is not really red. I'd call it more of a bright orange-red. I'd recommend looking at it in person before you buy - especially if you are wanting more of a cherry red.

    LOVE THIS COVER

If you're looking for a protective case, this is not for you. This will protect the screen and keep the iPad looking great though! The color is vibrant, and unlike the leather version, the polyurethane can be cleaned! This case looks great on the space gray iPad Air!
