    Sorta works

    • Written by from Richfield

I bought this to use with 30 pin cables I already have to connect a iPad mini. I have the Apple iPad mini Smart Case and I have to remove the iPad mini from the case in order to use this adapter The plug casing is too large to go into the case. Other cables I have are fine, the USB to Lightning cable that came with the iPad mini and the SD card reader with lightning, both work with the case. The cable needs to be re-designed with a smaller lighting connector and Apple needs to make it right with those that wish to exchange for the correct cable. Apple stuff should be compatible with other Apple stuff.

Manufacturing defect in some of these adapters!

    • Written by from Harrison

After reading the mixed reviews (mostly negative), I decided to purchase the adapter in person at a local Apple store. The Sales Rep. assured me I was purchasing the correct product for my purpose (my Audi A5 media connector has a 30-pin plug and I needed a Lightening Adapter to connect my iPhone 5s). As soon as I left the store and got to my car, I attempted to use the adapter to connect my iPhone. Like others who have reviewed this product, I received a note on my phone's screen that stated "This accessory does not work with this device".
I immediately returned to the store and explained the problem to the Sales Rep. He suggested I exchange the adapter for another identical one and try to connect with the replacement. To my surprise (and pleasure) the replacement worked just fine. My iTune songs and Pandora played through my vehicle's Media connection perfectly.
Based on the mixed reviews and my personal experience, I can only assume some of these adapters have manufacturing defects. I hope that someone from Apple Engineering reads this review and addresses this quality control issue.

Many of these are defective! Return your bad one and get one that works!

    • Written by from HOLMDEL

I purchased this adapter with an iPad Mini Retina. I got the "This accessory is not supported by this device." error message. I made a Genius Bar appointment, demonstrated the problem, and they replaced the adapter with one that works. The new one works perfectly with my Bose Sound Dock, camera & SD readers for older iPad, and other older 30-pin devices. Judging by the reviews, there are an awful lot of defective instances of this adapter! (If the first one had worked, it would have five stars.)

Does not charge iPhone 5 when used with some accessories.

    • Written by from Oak Park

When used with some 30 PIN docking stations, it does charge the iPhone 5. When used with other 30 PIN accessories that consistently charge 30 PIN iPods, this cable does NOT charge the iPhone 5. Charging does not work when used with an P.I.E. FRDW/PC-POD2 (replaces the 6 CD changer in Ford vehicles with a 30 PIN iPod interface).

Very disappointing. How hard is it to charge an iPhone 5?

Works fine but is way overpriced

    • Written by from Kew Gardens

I bought this to connect my iPhone 5 to my two audio docks in the house. Unlike the $29 adapter, which is also overpriced, I don't have a problem connecting to my iPhone in it's case. Still, it's not the most elegant design for an adapter, and I have to set the phone on top of the table or counter my audio dock device is on and I have to twist the phone in an odd way to navigate through my music selections. But the sound is fine, no issues at all on that front. But $39? For a bit of plastic and metal? It's ridiculously over-priced, but you absolutely have to have one or more if you have audio equipment bought during the 30-pin connector era. I feel a bit like I've been mugged for this.

    NOT FULLY FUNCTIONAL

    • Written by from Silver Spring

The price - like most things in life - is what it is. If you're an Apple regular, you should be used to that by now.

However, it isn't fully functional. It works to transfer pics from my DSLR camera to the iPad (retina) - but it does not allow me to play video on my ancient TV using a 30 pin component cable (the yellow, red, white input job). I get audio through it. But no video. Not even the NTSC/Pal option in the video setting on the iPad is showing up.

    Peace.

    Mostly happy with it

    • Written by from Fredericton

I bought this at an Apple store, and was shocked at the high price ($45). However, I had got a really cool new dock for Christmas that I really wanted to use that only had a 30-pin connector, so I got it.

I'm very happy with it, and glad I bought it! It syncs with my dock perfectly AND supports charging. However, the cord is very short, and it's hard to rest it on the stand with out the tension in the cord wanting to flip it off. Once I found a good position though, it was fine. I'm looking forward to using it in my car!

    A little disappointed

    • Written by from Loveland

This adapter has a very small I mean small cable Seems to work for audio, works well with my pioneer receiver but with my ihome it doesnt charge it plays though, the cable should be at least a foot long so we can lay it next to our docking centers not hang them I think all of us iphone buyers should of got one of these with our purchase, letting us know how they work with different devices., I think every one that buys a new iPhone or ipod are going to be disappointed for awhile, because nothing will work the same as there older iphones and iPods I am. and the wost thing there are no docking stations or clock radios out for us to buy

Pricey and doesn't fit perfectly, but it works

    • Written by from Fremont

If you think the 8 pin end is the exact same size as the USB lightning cable that came with the phone, you'll be disappointed to hear that it's actually thicker. This means even if the lightning cable that came with the phone fits fine through your case, there is a good chance this cable won't. So if you bought this thinking it will fit your case better than the stubby 30 pin to lightning adapter, you should double check. My case fits the USB lighting cable fine, but I have to really jam this one in and it stretches the bottom of my case. Other than that, it works as it should, both my old iPhone clock radio and car stereo function just as it did with my previous iPhone 4.

    Not long enough

    • Written by from Long Beach

I purchased this cable to attach to the dock of my iHome iA90. The cable works just fine to charge, play music, and support all normal functions of the iHome. The problem is that the cable is too short to let the iPhone 5 rest comfortably anywhere on my nightstand or even on the iHome itself.

I returned this cable a few days after purchasing it and opted instead for the "lightning to 30 pin adapter", which for 10 dollars less fits nicely on the dock and actually supports the weight of the iPhone 5.

All in all, I can't really think of a use for this cable.

Works well but doesn't fit well

    • Written by from WINSTON SALEM

This cable had done all I have asked it to do so far, except fit into my iPhone with a case on.

My case (made by Switcheasy, awesome case!) has a hole cut out for the Lightning port. I think many cases have this feature. The cable that shipped with the iPhone fits perfectly. On this cable, the lightning end is MUCH thicker than the original cable and will not fit with my case. I had to remove some of the plastic around the lightning end to even get to close to it fitting.

Why is this end so much thicker? I can't see any reason for it. So if you have a case that has a small cutout for the lightning port, beware of this cable.

    Limited functions with my car.

    • Written by from West Orange

The adapter fits well with my rokform case. It charges and i can play streaming apps like pandora and espn radio perfectly. However, my gps app's sounds had vibrations through the speakers.

It will also not work with my music. I can view the music files and playlists however when i select a song it will not play. Also it will not work with my steering wheel functions.

My car is a altima 2012.

    Wish it was longer

    • Written by from San Diego

The cable is an awkward length, a little too short or not long enough.

too bad it is not 3 feet long, so I can keep the old 30 pin connector hidden in my car.

    Works, with 2 caveats

    • Written by from Mount Laurel

Restores all functionality of my in dash navigation unit in my car except video (which I knew going in). I'm ok with that, and that's the first caveat.

The second caveat is that I bought the cable version (spending the extra $10) because the lightning tip seemed to be such that it would work with any case. This is NOT the case (no pun intended).

The plastic on the tip of this adapter cable is slightly larger than the plastic on the tip of the lightning to USB cable.

The standard lightning to USB cable fits perfectly through the opening in any case, including the SwitchEasy Tones (highly regarded as one of the best cases out there so far), but this adapter DOES NOT FIT through the opening on the Tones case.

Be warned, if the case you're using has an opening with little to no clearance in any direction when using the lightning to USB cable, then this cable likely won't fit through your case opening.

All this said, the cable works fantastic, I just have to remove my case. Looking at new cases now....

    Different size than USB-lightning plug

    • Written by from Denver

I chose this one because the smaller, no-cable adapter doesn't fit with my iPhone 5 case. Turns out this one doesn't fit either because its Lightning housing is larger than the included USB cable's Lightning housing. I have to return it because it is also incompatible with my case.

I don't mind the conceptual change from 30-pin to Lightning, but Apple's implementation seems to be inconsistent and not well thought. Why not make them the same size??

not completely working with the vehicle's media interface

    • Written by from Vancouver

I bought this cable last week, I was so excited to connect it to my vehicle's media interface, so that I can enjoy the songs in my iPhone 5 while driving.

This adapter allows me enjoy the songs in my iPhone 5, but it does not charge the battery. I need an improved adapter that allow me enjoy the songs while charging the battery, please.

Also, this adapter is way over priced.
