I bought this for my new iPad mini. You should insert the card in the reader, then insert into iPad. No problem with transfer.

To use the sd card reader you must set up the sd card like it came from a camera. If you just put pictures on a sd card and plug it in, the ipad will not recognize or see any pictures. That was what I was doing when I first got this. I thought it didn't work!!!
Naturally when you pull a sd card from your camera, it is formatted so the camera can read/ write on it. You can plug that sd card into the reader with no problems or extra steps and the ipad will see it.
But, when you are taking pictures from, lets say your laptop, you have to create a folder named "DCIM" then put a folder "100DICAM" in it. Now put all your videos and pictures in this folder. This just makes the ipad think the sd card is from a camera and is now able to see it.
The lightning sd card reader works great except for this annoyance. Hope this helps people. Have a great day.

I was originally going to return the card reader because it didn't work at all. I wanted to use it to transfer pictures I had stored on my laptop to the mini iPad. I did the copying to the sd card and plugged it into the iPad and nothing happened. It was so frustrating. I did this several times.

Thankfully, I saw the question and answer section on this website. First all the pictures had to put into a DCIM folder (just create it on the sd card). After I did that, it worked like a charm! I plugged the connector into the iPad and it automatically went to the camera section and asked if I wanted to download the pictures.

This connector assumes that you are taking a card directly out of your camera and then into the connector. No comment on that assumption!

I have the 128 GB Ipad4 with the iPhoto app. Like many photographers, I bought the Ipad to review my photos in the field without resorting to the inconvenience of a bigger computer. I have been able to read RAW and jpg files from 32 GB SD cards, but not from 64 GB cards. (With the 64 GB cards I get the Ipad msg "Contents not Available, Cannot read the connected storage.") In searching online, I have found that other users have had the same experience. Given the photography market using the Ipad, where DSLR photographers commonly use 64 GB cards, this is something Apple needs to fix.

I have tired it with 5 different SD cards. Works with all of them. Does what it states nothing more nothing less. If you are looking to add more storage to your iPad your'e looking at the wrong solution. It was made to go along with a digital camera. Not replace a laptop to someone of you reviewers.
This is what it is for. I am on a trip in say Cuba. I just took some amazing pictures with my digital DSR. Now I want to share some of those pictures on Facebook. This device will allow you to upload pictures to your iPad and view them. Then with your iPad connected to the internet via wifi or 3G you can share the pictures whatever way you want. It goes great with a digital camera. You can edit/photoshop the pictures on your iPad and make room on your SD card for more pictures.

If your SD card isn't working then check the lock toggle on the side of the SD card. It is sometimes hit while pushing the SD card into the slot.

If I had one problem with the reader it would be that there is no cover over the SD slot. While not a big problem it would be nice to protect from dust and sand.

Won't read 64gb cards? That's incredibly annoying, it's not a popular size yet, but it's certainly not obscure. Not working with iPhones is an annoyance as well, but well enough documented that I already knew of the limitation before ordering.

Bought this adaptor hoping to download pictures from my D7100 camera. Yet found that it cannot read SDXC card beyond 32GB.....really becomes a white elephant...nice to see, poor to use

It must be understood that this adapter was meant to read directly from a camera Those of you who are expecting this adapter to work as expandable storage best be prepared to work for it. That is, the reader will only read the photos AND videos IF they’re named and formatted correctly. Let me clarify further that all files MUST be in 8 digit alpha-numerics (e.g. XXXX1234). It doesn’t matter how it’s named as long as there are eight (8) characters. No special characters other than underscore ( _ ). Even then it can only be used as the 4th character (e.g. DSC_0001). Concerning formats, JPG and MP4 works perfectly. Haven’t tried h.264 yet. Again, it must…MUST be understood that this is a “camera card” reader, NOT external storage. And to confirm, No, you can not transfer from ipad to card; ONLY from card to ipad.

I had no idea there was a 32GB limit to which SD card it could read. I have a 64GB card and plan on getting a second 64GB card for my holidays, only to learn after the fact that this "SD card reader" can't read SD cards! After thinking I had a faulty product, find through reviews here that there is a limit - 32GB and lower. An overpriced, inadequate product by Apple.

When I connect the SD card from the camera to the iPad and import the photos, everything works as it should. But when I try to put the SD back into my Canon, apparently it changes it's format or something because the camera won 't read my SD card afterwards. I have an iPad 4th gen and I use it to transfer photos from my camera on-the-go to quickly edit and upload. But, seeing as I can't re-insert it in the camera, it's a huge issue. Does anyone else have this issue?
