    TOO SHORT

    • Written by from Plano

I would like to see Apple offer multiple length options with this cable. I need a longer one: 5-6 ft for charging and a shorter one 6"-1 ft for connecting to my MacBook for syncing and updating. Don't know why this hasn't been done much sooner!

Verified to be 3.5 foot long cable - works with existing wall and car plugs

    • Written by from APPLE VALLEY

I just received my shipment of 3 of these cables directly from China. I measured my cables to be exactly 42 inches long. So they are about 3.5 feet long. About the same as previous Apple charging cables. Really, Apple should make them all 6ft long, which is why I am giving this 4 stars.

Since 3.5 feet is not usually long enough for most uses, search amazon for "white USB extension" from C2G in 3ft, 6ft or 9ft extension cables for about $2 to $5 dollars, which can then be put in between the wall power brick (or car port adapter) and this cable.

Existing power transformers with a USB jack on them (for home or car power port) that worked with your iPhone 3gs, 4 or 4s, should work fine with this new cable and the iPhone 5. 1 amp (1a = 5 watts) is standard for iPhones. 2 amp (2a = 10 watts) is standard for iPads. But it's well known, that if you buy 2 amp (10w) power plug then your iPhone 5 will charge in about 60% of the time. I like the PowerGen brand 10w chargers from amazon for $10.

    SOOO Much Smaller & Better!!!

    • Written by from PENSACOLA

Yes, they changed the connector. Yes it's kind of a hassle. But that's progress for you & I prefer this cable. No more fumbling in the dark - it just slides right in the right way every time. Apple does need to get a few more in the stores though. But love the new cable and love the new design.

    too short

length is barely long enough to reach nightstand. it's inevitable it will fall at some point due to being too short. why isn't it available in a longer length option?

    Cable length

    • Written by from Orefield

The cable is too short except for desktop recharging. You need a desktop power outlet for this to be practical however. A socket on the floor is unusable w/o an extension cord.

    Awful

    • Written by from Golden Valley

I've had my iphone 5 for four days and my lightning cord has already stopped working. It doesnt recognize the wall charger when i plug it in and it says my iphone is drawing too much power from my computer when i plug it in there. I saw hundreds of people with the same problem on forums within the last hour of troubleshooting, proving that this is a widespread issue. Do NOT buy this product. Apple needs to realize that you cant half step this stuff just because of high demand. not cool

Offer a multi-pack, make it easy to get back to normal.

    • Written by from Mountlake Terrace

I've gotten used to having about five unique docking cables, each of different length. I conveniently stash them in the places I use them. Work(super short), home(normal length), in a my cars and a travel accessory dock cable (super long 6'). I had my cable needs taken care of over the years with a few odd apple purchases and from a few other vendors. I'm not griping because you have made this proprietary/authenticated, I just wish there was a way I could get back to normal with a reasonable selection of lengths to get my e-kit back up to speed. If you offered a reasonably priced multi-pack in the let's say $50 range with five cables of multiple lengths that would really make me happy.

    Wonderfull Connector

    • Written by from Bourg

I am loving the new charger. Just wish Apple would come out with a Lighting to 30 pin connector for any who has the lighting cable can charge their old device with the lighting cable.

    good idea, horrible execution

    • Written by from LIBERTY TOWNSHIP

Love the new phone and liked the new connector... until I caught it in the zipper of my briefcase. Now I have no charging cable and there is no way to purchase a new one; not at the Apple Store, not at Best Buy, AT&T, etc.
Who was the moron who didn't anticipate an immediate need for additional charging cables? This couldn't be anticipated? I have dozens of 30-pin cables for every office, car and room of the house.
I have a great new phone that will soon be a paper-weight until I can get a new cable.

    Great design, but...

    • Written by from Edmonton

At first I was upset that Apple had changed to a new connector at all, since I already owned so many 30-pin cables (one for work, one for computer at home, one to charge phone in the bedroom at home, one for the car). However, after getting the iPhone 5 and using the new cable, I am indeed impressed! First of all, the new connector is reversable so I no longer have to make sure I am inserting the cable right-side-up. But also, the insertion of the cable just feels so much more solid, secure, and I am always sure it is inserted fully and correctly. With the old 30-pin connector, I was always a little nervous it wasn't going to connect and so would push it twice to be sure, and if I accidentally tried inserting it upside-down, I would fear I might be damaging it.

The only thing I wish Apple would do is make the lighning cable longer! It's roughly the same length as the old 30-pin cable, but this is not long enough in my opinion. The cable should at least be available in 2 sizes to choose from.

NOTE: The price of a lightning to USB cable is quite a bit LESS than the price of the adaptor to convert the old 30-pin cable to lighning! I just ordered 3 more cables from Apple (and they were shipped and delivered promptly - and they all work perfectly, no defects). I was about to order the adaptor until I realized the cable was cheaper. I had been assuming the adaptor would have been the cheapest option.

    Faulty cable within a week

    • Written by from Mulberry

Cable went faulty within a week. The network carrier can't get them for three weeks. Poor Apple quality control. Now I have to order one at my own expense because of no stock by my carrier (it's on backorder).

Cord works good but needs to be much longer

    • Written by from Schertz

    Team,
Please consider making at least a 5' cord soon; however, most of us prefer 6' so we can use it while charging or our children use it in the back seat of a vehicle.

We would rather have your product over after market, but we all buy what comes out first to meet our needs.

    Nice, but Elusive...

    • Written by from Dayton

While the cable has an elegant minimalistic design and the reversibility of the connector makes it easier to plug into the phone, having to carry around the 1 cable that I've apparently been rationed to everywhere with me because of insanely short supply (backordered weeks to months at just about any vendor, including Apple itself) completely cancels out the convenience of the reversible plug.

If you feel the cable is too short...

Why not pick up a USB extension cable? I love the new connector compared to the old 30 pin. Huge improvement with no negatives so far.

A costly accessory with questionable benefit

    • Written by from Montclair

Paving the way for the future? Perhaps. If so, we can't tell by any increased transfer speed.

The only convenience seems to be the fact that you can connect them either way and the "convenience" of the earphone plug at the bottom. A convenience I would GLADLY give up since it makes ALL holders or docks obsolete. I sit my iPhone 5 at my desk upside down now so I can listen to music with the ghastly named "earpods."

The reason for the low score is not just because of that lack of speed boost that u.s.b. 3 or even Thunderbolt could have provided but availability. If you're going to force folks to not only replace their existing cables but force them to use only yours by including proprietary verification ships in them, you should at least have the decency of making sure your stores have plenty of stock for your costly cables.

Unless you like questions about your new products to be answered by, "I would love to show you this new iDevice but I can't because the battery is already drained."

I don't imagine that would go down well with potential customers which as an Apple device owner we frequently interact with.

Plugs are located on the FLOOR

    • Written by from Beaverton

Well the cable has served well but I will join in the shouting crowds of (angry) customers who want to be able to plug the device in and still use them. I think Apple failed to realize that most wall sockets are located near to the FLOOR and not right next to the user...3.5 ft is not going to cut it! Make a longer cable!! for $20 i shouldn't be needing an extension lead to both charge and use my iPad at the same time.

This is such an improvement over the 30 pin! OK it's a pain for a while (especially due to lack of inventory) but this is great product. much better than the micro USB. Maybe other manufacturers should adopt it ;)
