Perfect DVD drive for Macbook Air Users

For some reason, the burning speed is much faster on this SuperDrive than other standalone DVD drives you find on Amazon. I tried the Amazon Basic DVD drive, but the speed is so slow that I had to return it. The Apple USB SuperDrive doesn't have this problem, though.

I recently bought this to install software on my new MacBook Pro with retina display and it does its job quite well. Although it still irks me that such a device is even necessary in this day and age. Sure improved portability is a nice feature but taking away the optical disk drive to do so seems silly. Overall no complaints, however.

Most of These "Reviews" Have Problems

Excepting those who legitimately had a defective superdrive, many of the reviews here are very inaccurate, misinformed, and misleading to prospective customers. In my research as someone who was changing from a PC to the newest iMac, I found many of these reviews incredibly frustrating. The best review I read that had great advice and common sense was this one:

(QUOTE) - The drive works perfectly as described.
My response to others are as follows:

    1) It is a DVD drive, not a Blue Ray drive. No DVD players can play Blue Ray, though Blue Ray can play both. The reason that Apple does not have a Blue Ray option is due to rights ownership. Don't blame Apple, blame Sony.

    2) Ejecting a CD/DVD on a MAC is different than on a Windows box. Try clicking the eject button on your top bar in OSX, if it is not there, right click on the drive's icon on your desktop and then click on "Eject". Don't blame Apple for your lack of understanding on how to use their products.
    (UNQUOTE)

Be informed before giving a review that will mislead others. I plugged this in, ripped my cds like crazy (quiet AND fast!) and it's been fantastic. I have it sitting FLAT on the 'foot' of my iMac where it coordinates perfectly. I use the eject button on the top right of my Apple wireless keyboard, though you can also do it on screen.

I have absolutely no complaints about this product, but I definitely do have complaints about some of the reviews. Accuracy is important when doing a review. Thank=you.

    Superdrive needs smart humans !

This optical drive by Apple has been, by far, the best driver I've ever had. Prior to purchase I read the reviews here and was surprised to see how many people had problems ejecting a "non-DVD" disc (i.e. game, software load, app manager, etc) ... There is waaaay too much misinformation and speculation being made by wannabe, hot potato users. The drive works perfectly and ejects ANY disc on demand ... only requirement... Human needs to be SMARTER than Driver ! I've seen knuckle heads suggesting the total disassembly of the unit to remove a disc ! Why own a computer if you're still in the stone age?

The optical drive will recognize DVD and non-DVD discs, common sense dictates that if the drive doesn't recognize a disc as a DVD...you're not going to succeed in commanding the DVD controller to eject it. It's not a technically DVD ! (note: that is whether or not it is a DVD!...Sometimes a DVD format may be incorrect, so it gets disqualified),

All you need to do is go to the disc icon on your desk top (if you've selected in "System Preferences" to show the disc icon on the desk top) or just hit "Command+up arrow" till you reach the disc and drivers level, then right click on the disc icon and select eject.

The DVD controller will grey out the Eject option so you cannot do anything there. This process is very similar to PC formats except that PC always puts a disc icon on your desk top. Apple gives you the choice.

Have used a few other DVD/CD burners but find Apple's USB SuperDrive to be a very reliable unit in comparison. It may not be the fastest burner out there, but it's reliability more than makes up for it.

Even after reading some of the reviews, I bought the superdrive, plugged it in and found it works perfect on my 15' Mac Book Pro Retina Display. I find the cord a perfect length and have had no issues with any disk ejecting, this is a great product that is fast, simple to use, and works as advertised.

Purchased this drive to install Win7 on my new 2012 MacBook Air with Mountain Lion on it and was quite a bit hesitant after all the negative reviews of it but I knew I needed it for what I had to do. Anyway got it in the mail today and all I can say is things went perfectly from the start to finish without a single problem. Maybe a small bit of humming and viberation while I had it sitting on a mouse pad when it was installing Windows from my Windows Disc. After Win7 was done and installed I then ejected the disc from Win7 OS and rebooted back to Mountain Lion for the burning of a DVD with the Drivers & Update support for my Windows that I installed. Well I followed all the prompts, installed my blank DVD-RW to have the content burned to Disc and that perfectly fine as well, with no problem what so ever. I then shut down from Mountain Lion, booted back into Windows and inserted the new Disc that was just burned with the Driver & Update support and that too went perfectly fine and really quite well. I have nothing to complain about at all about the USB Driver other than it does what it's suppose to do without any problems at all (For me anyway). Maybe these drives could be a luck of the draw on if you get a perfectly working one or a lemon one but I can't see or understand why so many people seem to be having trouble with them.

Oh and for the people mentioning the cable being a bit on the short side I personally find it being perfectly fine and also gives a good fair amount of space for the drive and Notebook when paired together. A cable any longer would just be a plain eyesore and would leave alot of unnecessary clutter around the work area.

I gave this review a FULL 5 STARS after it's great functionality & workmanship.

I was really skeptical about getting this after reading the negative reviews, but I needed it, so I went and purchased it today to install Parallels and Windows 8 on my rMBP.

The installation went without a hitch, and it's not as slow as a lot people who reviewed the SD said it was.

I'm glad I went with this despite the negative reviews.

Just bought a Mac Mini a few weeks ago and knew I would need the companion superdrive to compliment the rest of my set up, it worked flawlessly when i plugged it in and has been working flawlessly ever since. i wish the cord was a little longer but it was never a deal breaker for me. I have it set up with my Mac Mini, Apple TV, a set of Bose speakers and my 32' HDTV, wireless keyboard & magic mouse.

Why people are having so many negative issues I can't understand, but for me......it's a
    'Winner'!

This drive works remarkably well for the couple of times a year I need a disk drive. It reads and writes very fast, is compact and portable if necessary and looks great with the MacBook Air and new MacBook Pro. Only complaint would be the short cord, it is usable but if it was about ten inches longer it would be great.

As for the person who bought an Air and didn't realize there was no drive, I would take little stock in anything they might have to say.

    MacAir perspective

I have a Mac Air and this burner is absolutely perfect for the Air. I bought the air for size, weight travel advantages and knowing that if needed I have the burn capability with me without the size, weight, etc... makes it a great 1-2 punch. The attached cable is so simple. For me it was the deal breaker in terms of being able to justify the total package of the MacAir.

    What's with all the hate?

This is a superdrive.... It works great! Those of you giving bad reviews because it doesn't do blu-ray need to quit posting reviews. It doesn't say anything in the description about blu-ray anywhere so if you bought it expecting blu-ray that's your own fault. If you ordered one and got a dud then send it back or take it into an apple store and exchange it. Apple will be more than happy to take a drive back that malfunctioned within the warranty period. People and their silver spoons.... it's a $79 superdrive! Should Apple name it
"Non-BluRay Superdrive That Might Malfunction But We're Willing to Exchange it For You If that's the Case & Should Any Other Issues Arise That Might Not Be Listed in the Description You Can Call Us & We'll Gladly Answer Any Questions You May Have."?
I think that title is a little ridiculous just like your reviews. I bought it... came in.... worked great... exactly what I expected because I've owned Macs for ages and because I am smart and read the description of what I'm buying.

All of the bad reviews don't state which version/model year/cpu of MB their using..To trash this drive before telling us is just poor reviewing..All the newer macs with retina work flawlessly with this drive..To write all these complaints and not telling us is a waste of everybodys time and causes a lot of confusion when deciding on a purchase..
