    Works great, but warm/hot?

    • Written by from Austin

Works great, nice to have my old FW800 stuff back for my new MBA. However, the adapter and plug at the laptop are really warm and sometimes very hot. Doesn't seem quite right...

Wish it had a thunderbolt out port

    • Written by from Menlo Park

So here I am with my MacBook Air with a mini-displayport-to-DVI adapter feeding my monitor, and I have to unplug the monitor in order to plug in my firewire 800 disk.

Admittedly, this product was never advertised as a hub, and the price is a heckuva lot better than just about any other thunderbolt product out there, but thunderbolt still has a way to go before I can even do simple stuff that firewire and USB did from the get-go. I don't totally regret my MacBook Air purchase, but Apple hasn't made it easy to love the product.

Works with all my FW peripherals, including audio

    • Written by from Craryville

Works with OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro (twin 2.5" drives in RAID enclosure), and with an Echo AudioFire2 96 kHz audio interface. In both cases it was able to power the peripherals as well.

    Awesome!

If you have the new MBPr and firewire products that you use constantly you need this cable! I'm still using my (2) Lacie Rugged 1TB HD's on the field and this adapter helps out a lot! $29 yes please.

    • Written by from Beecher

Waited and waited for this to be released... and it doesn't give enough power to power my G-Raid Mini (Gen 3)

    Really disappointed!

Makes me regret buying a rMBP...

Does what it is designed to do...

I have 3 Firewire 400 external HDs that still need to be accessed with my new Macbook Air. Two of them are La Cie and one is an Acomdata. Using the Adapter and a FW 800 to FW400 cable I am able to connect a drive to the macbook air and daisy chain another drive to the one connected to the air. So far it meets my expectations. Thanks Apple!

FireWire sound mixer now works with MBA

    • Written by from Grand Terrace

I can now use my MBA to record music with my MultiMix FireWire sound mixer. Had to download the driver for the mixer so it shows up in the sound preference panel. Thanks Apple.

    works fine so far!

    • Written by from Tempe

I used it with my MOTU audio interface. So far so good. I just noticed a little overheat of the adapter, but I don't know if it is normal.

Works fine for data, is dicier for bus-powered devices

    • Written by from Chicago

The adapter seems to work fine for devices that have their own power supply but i have had mixed results on bus powered interfaces / drives. I've tested the MOTU Ultralite Hybrid mk3 and Iomega eGo. They don't work via bus power. An old FireLite drive works fine via bus power. If you have devices that demand more, you may be SOL. It is a decent solution but isn't a true FireWire gateway.

It does what it is supposed to do

    • Written by from Alexandria

Works with my G-Tech external HD without any external power, and with all of my firewire powered devices.

Daisy Chaining works without any glitches.

While I might ding Apple for the release delay, the review of the product is a separate matter - and this adapter works perfectly!

    It works

    • Written by from Alamo

Some guy mentioned it couldn't power his Lacie Rugged drive... well it works with mine (2.5") ... maybe he had a 3.5?

Minus a star because of the wait, and it's a bit longer than I'd hoped.

    Works with Presonus SL1642

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

I bought my Macbook Pro Retina as a replacement audio/visual device but was disappointed it took so long for the firewire/thunderbolt accessories to come out. I ordered this adapter the first day it was available and just tested it with my Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 and it worked well recording two channels for 10+ minutes. I have yet to test it with more channels but that will come.

    FInally!!

    • Written by from MANHATTAN

With a Retina, its been a pain trying to work with just the USB ports.

Apple talked about this adapter 2 months ago), finally they have released & I can use my FW800 drives again & hook up to my MP.

Works great only 3 stars as Apple took so long to come out with it.

Nice idea, wished it worked for me

    • Written by from Seal Beach

Finally something I can use my thunderbolt port for on my macbook air, BUT, I can only use it on a memory card reader because it doesn't supply enough power for my Lacie rugged hard drives. I have to keep using slowSB (USB). I thought this would make life easier for my macbook air, but unfortunately this supposedly amazing thunderbolt port continues to be quite useless for me.

Works great on MacBook Air (Mid-2011) with two WD My Book Studio II HDD

    • Written by from Houston

I just received my Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter today by FedEx I order on August 1st. I got two Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drives daisy chained to the Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter on my 13" MacBook Air (Mid-2011) running OS X Mountain Lion. One of the main reason I like FireWire is that you can daisy chain devices to one port. Speed stays the same unless your using FireWire 400 to 800 adapter or a FireWire 400 device is part of daisy chained devices. FireWire 800 is 100MBps and FireWire 400 is 50MBps. I'm glad it finally came be cause I don't like USB 2.0 at all. Apple designed FireWire and it works great. No complaints or problems. I recommend to all users with MacBook Air models with Thunderbolt port. In my book adding this Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter is like turning your MacBook Air to a MacBook Pro.
