    I hate this power adapter

The adapter is so heavy it constantly falls out of the socket .It gets hot ,which is scary ,and after one year my original is not working. I have to order a new one ,which brought me to these reviews. It's shocking to me that Apple hasn't changed this design when it clearly has problems.
When you pay for one of the highest priced laptops on the market, you expect a better product.

To all the people who call us whiners, you don't know what you are talking about. I've had my macbook pro for 2.5 years, and I've gone through 6-7 adapters, I've begun to lose count. I'm never harsh with them, I don't let my pets near them, and they all break in the same way, fraying near the box. All I ever do is plug them in, charge them, and let the box sit on the floor. So far the longest one has lasted is six months, usually it's only two or three, one even broke within three weeks. This is an awful product, and from the looks of it, enough people have mentioned it that apple should know. Shame on them for not doing anything about it. I don't want to spend $80 over and over to deal with their shoddy work.

    VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER

The Macbook Pro power adapter is of the WORST QUALITY and is totally UNRELIABLE! I paid dearly to own a Macbook, but if I am UNABLE to RECHARGE the BATTERY it is USELESS to me! For the third time I am forced to purchase a replacement power adapter for my computer. The second one stopped working reliably after only 6 months, and then I had to position the cord and fuss with the magnetic end to get it "Just Right" so it would charge at all! YOU SHOULD BE PROVIDING YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH AN EXCELLENT POWER ADAPTER THAT MATCHES THE QUALITY OF YOUR COMPUTERS AND PROVIDES RELIABLE, LONG LASTING SERVICE!
Grade: F minus (for your substandard power adapter)

Cord split and frayed within a week

Yup - $80 charger and in one week of simply being used in my home, the charger stopped working. It wasn't till I went to return it that I noticed the cord had split and frayed. The quality of the charger seems to be much lower than in the past - the cable seems to stiff and as a result splits open. Apple really needs to fix this - it's ridiculous to keep paying $80 left and right.

Why is this simple power cable considered a CONSUMABLE??!?

I have gone through 3 of these cables, and I am about to get my 4th!! Whats going on? To charge $79 is one thing, which I don't mind paying, I expect to pay more for my Apple products because I can usually depend on getting quality and dependability. But in this case, Apple has really failed. The failure (for me) is always near the MagSafe end of the cable. I'm a tech, so I can tell that there are wire breakages or fraying happening inside the rubber shielding. To happen once, is a one-off, to happen repeatedly is a serious problem with manufacturing and/or design. Come on Apple, put something decent in place of this part. The MagSafe idea is great, and so is the multi-colour LED, but the basics don't work - the actual POWER CABLE! And PLEASE stop gauging me $79 every time I have to pay for ANOTHER one of these failed products.

We're becoming a disposable society. Forget about quality, build it cheap, make money and you have captive customers. Just went on-line to order my third charge after the first two frayed. Terrible design and I'm surprised that this product still has not been redesigned. Very disappointing.

The power adapter that came with the MBP frayed and fell apart (I tried taping it with electrical tape, but because it frayed near the magnetic connection the tape didn't help). I bought a MagSafe Power Adapter for $79. By the look of its different design than the one that came with the MBP, I thought it would be fine. Not so much. This one actually was worse. Due to heat from the wires near the magnetic connector, the insulating wire covering burned and shredded into a strange gooey mess. Never saw anything like it. Now, I have to buy another one of these?

I really hope Apple considers designing a more durable charger. I only gave this one star because I had to. Since 2007 I have had two different macbooks, and at least 6 chargers. There are 925 ratings on this product with a total of 1.5 stars, which is seriously embarrassing for a company that makes many good products. Long story short, these are extremely expensive and do not last at all.

I am so disappointed in Apple making a power cord that is fraying I thought better of this company. Not looking forward to spending $79 to replace this original cord knowing I'll need to turn around and replace it again in 2 years. I need to apologies to my son I blamed him for the cord : (

    Bad charger design...

After 2 years of low use my 2010 MacBook Pro charger died. The reason of why my charger went bad is in the cable that goes out of the DC box to the computer. It seems that the cable inside got loose so as a result I am getting in-and-out charging from the computer which is not good on the battery and need to readjust the cable in order to have a steady charge. Worst yet is that Apple charges $79 USD for this charger and the lifespan of it is too short and there's no generic replacement. Apple needs to make these chargers more rugged even if they have to sacrifice on aesthetics.

This will be the third Magsafe adapter for my Macbook. All have failed due to poor design and manufacturing (broken spring pins, frayed chord). Apple makes a great computer that lasts for years, but then screws you on their cheaply made, overpriced power adapters. Now I'm walking bowlegged, thanks Apple.

Bottom line: an $80 power cord should last longer than two years. I am very careful with my computer equipment because I can't afford to buy replacements every other year. There is no visible damage or sign of strain anywhere on the adapter, but it has simply stopped working.
If so many people are having the same problem, then clearly there is some flaw in the design/manufacturing. It's time for Apple to address this.

The magnetic DC connector does not protect the wires from being kinked as it says in the description. I am on my second adapter in the last year because the newly designed magnetic end fits in a way that actually makes the wire kink and eventually break. The previously designed magnetic end that fit perpendicular to the computer did much more to protect the wires than this one. I wonder if they tested it?

    Design Defect?

This adapter has an unfortunate design flaw. The skinny cord is prone to fraying or developing shorts near the MagSafe connector. Because this connector is permanently affixed to the transformer brick, you must replace the entire unit when the cord fails. I understand that these cords do fail—this is probably an unavoidable consequence of winding and unwinding. But it seems incredibly wasteful that you have to junk the entire adapter when the cord does fail. And they're so expensive to replace.

I owned my 2010 MBP for 8 months before the wire was done for. I had to wiggle it around to find a connection for a month before it quit on me. When I went in to purchase a replacement and they said &79.99 I was in complete shock. I'm not saying the design is bad, I actually really like the magnetic connection idea, but they are so cheap. Not worth $80. I'm just waiting for my new one to stop working like the last one so I have to drop that much again...

APPLE NEEDS TO GIVE US COMPENSATION / IT DOESN'T WORK WITH 2008 MAC BOOK

    • Written by from ..

    This is the worst nightmare.
I got a Mac Book Pro in April 2008. The laptop is in perfect shape, however the power adaptor broke down. I got a new one (not cheap!) and I was informed Apple only offer the new L shape model, which doesn't work properly.
If I connect the adaptor when the laptop is turned off, it will charge. Subsequently, if I turn on the laptop, it still charges.
HOWEVER, if i disconnect the adaptor -while the Mac is on- and try to connect it again, it won;t charge. Everytime I need to re-charge, I need to turn off the computer.
IT TAKES AWAY THE NOTION OF A LAPTOP, I am stuck now with a desk computer that needs to be plugged.
I changed twice the power adaptor, took it to a genius bar, and nothing has happened. The latest is that they will try to change something inside the laptop. They were very patronizing. As, obviously, the mac is not under guarantee anymore, they said they wouldn't charge for that, suggesting they were being really nice, when the case is that they could not find anything wrong with the computer.
Apple manufactured a new design because the last one was quite bad, but they didn't properly tested it in order to work with the new models and the old ones.
All this sounds like if I hate Apple, when I actually love it, and that's why I am so angry. I do love the products, the brand , the quality. This is not the only product I've got. But I have to say I am absolutely disappointed on the company not taking action on this, and offering compensation to those affected. It is outrageous that they suggest to buy a second hand old-model from Amazon or something.
Just trying not to be horrible, I have to say the people I've dealt with have been quite nice and genuinely worried, but it is the company who should respond to this!
I've lost two entire days on this, and looks I will have to lose more time, but I will definitely post what happens after they take my laptop in, good or bad.
