I used an Alps track pad instead of a mouse back in the mic 90's and have always had one on the laptop that my employer provides. When I bought my wife a MacBook, I realized how much I would love having one on my Mac Pro. I have always used a mouse on my Macs and am so glad that I got the Magic Trackpad. The large surface makes gestures easy to perform, the angle and height match my Apple keyboard, and the click/tap options are great. I would recommend this to anybody who enjoys trackpads. I may never go back to a mouse.

    Great ergonomics (with a tweak)!

Some have complained about the slant angle, but there is a hidden default that lets you invert or flip it as needed. Enter this command in Terminal (will prompt for root password), then restart your Mac or reconnect the Magic Trackpad:

sudo defaults write com.apple.MultitouchSupport ForceAutoOrientation YES

Now place the Magic Trackpad in desired orientation on your desk and drop all 5 fingers on it (outstretched towards the edges not scrunched up). The coordinates of the trackpad automatically flip so all cursor and gesture motions match the new hand orientation.

This trick is particularly helpful to maintain a straight wrist if your desk height is relatively low. If your hand is too large for palms to rest comfortably on the battery hump, place a palm rest behind the battery hump. You can click the button with forward fingers, or use tap click and 3-finger drag!

    Super upgrade

I just got my Trackpad and, although I am just getting used to it, I am very pleased. I like the idea of no trackball to have to clean and the ability to perform different functions with the finger movements. I removed my mouse so that I would learn to use the trackpad without the temptation of using the mouse. I am already getting the hang of it. Great product!

I find I can do things faster and the trackpad can do multiple things that a mouse can't. Not only that my wrist feels better using this device then the mouse and it is very easy to keep clean.

This product is one of the few touchpads on the market that actually work. The bluetooth connection works perfectly and you don't feel any difference with the built-in touchpad. Only one thought: why not make 4-finger gestures possibile?

all in all, great product, works the way you want it to work.

More sensitive than the MacBook trackpad.

I have always used the trackpad on my MacBook Pro. My brother says that he can't control the trackpad on his MacBook Pro and uses the Magic Mouse. "The trackpad on the MacBook is always launching something," he says.

Well now I know what he means. Just a little bump on the side of the pad while typing on my wireless keyboard and I'm inserting text in a paragraph back at the top of the page.

I always set the MacBook Pro track pad pref to "Ignore accidental touches while typing" but with the MTP there is no such pref. Or any sensitivity pref. So now I keep the MTP well away from the keyboard.

Was this useful? More sensitive than the MacBook trackpad.

I have owned the Magic Trackpad for 5 days now. I can't see myself returning to use the Magic Mouse again. There is so much more flexibility to using the pad. I had not expected that. It is easy to set up, very easy to get used to. The most helpful information provided with the pad is actually the back of the box. There you will find 12 diagrams which illustrate the motions necessary to operate the features of the pad. Much easier to follow/understand than the written instructions found in the documentation booklet provided. I have a copy of those illustrations in front of me as I learn to use this tool.
I am just sorry that I waited so long to go to the pad. I don't usually write product reviews, but this device just reenforces the reason why I buy the innovations of Apple Computer.

    Whoa, Don't Be So Sensitive!

I'm only going to give the Magic Trackpad three stars and they're for the idea. The product is a great idea, BUT this thing is waaay too sensitive! I can almost just look at the Trackpad and it'll start tapping, clicking, swiping and whatever else! I've only had the thing for a short while and maybe in time I'll do a lot better. For now, though, I'm very tempted to put it in the drawer and forget it.

P.S. I ended up using my Magic Mouse to navigate around this review box to correct my typos.

I just picked this up today, very cool. No more scrubbing the mighty mouse rollerball on a sheet of paper to get it to work. Looks nice on my desk. Mighty mouse went straight to the old mac box collection in the garage. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long, for the money this is a no brainer.

Love it - won't use a mouse again

Dear Apple - please don't ever discontinue this product!

I don't have any of the wrist strain that I used to have from using a standard mouse. Sure the magic mouse helped – and I bought that too – but the trackpad takes it to the next level. I don't have to slide and click and lift and slide, etc. I went as far as enabling tap to click, which completely eliminates strain from clicking the surface.

The gestures are also great and though I wish I could natively customize them a bit more, what you get out of the box is still pretty versatile.

This mouse pad works great, no errors, good gesture recognition, the only problem is being used to a normal mouse. I would recommend this for anyone who doesn't have enough area for the magic mouse.

Just bought one. Ignore the critics. They're wrong. This thing is amazing. It's perfect. There is no carpel tunnel issue. There is no hesitation connection issue. I love it. I absolutely love it. If you're thinking about it, just buy the thing.

style over substance - stay away

    • Written by from Austin

I generally love Apple's sense of style and the importance they place on it. Unfortunately, with the magic pad Apple have let style rule over substance. It forces the wrist to maintain a constant awkward tension with an upward angle sure to bring on carpal tunnel syndrome.

I was ready to make at least intermittent sacrifice of my wrist for the use of such an elegant promising device but the thing is prone to irritating lapses in response and obnoxious intermittent pauses. Usually quite calm, I was so frustrated by the (non-)magic pad that I tossed it out of my site. It turns out it really is made of glass...

I'd pass on this one if I were you.

    got that?
i don't see any reasonable person pay $70 for this.
sure, it's better than a mouse but it needs a lot of improvement. i picked this up at a local store for $50 new. ONE MONTH and the battery is at 15%.
very disappointed. and because of the battery part this is angled so it makes typing ie reaching the keyboard somehow difficult.
