    No Range

Would not work more than 10 feet from my modem. Returned it and got a new one per Dropcam customer service, same problem. Just worthless.

Great device - awesome customer service

    • Written by from Danbury

Out of the box, set-up was super easy (via iPad for me). Both daytime and especially nighttime resolution was really surprising to me. Very low light/dark room shows up like it's in the middle of a football stadium at game time. I did have a problem (which I think was ultimately related to my ISP (TWC...) throttling back my internet speed). I communicated with DropCam customer support, and they IMMEDIATELY sent me a new camera (even before they received back the old one (which they paid to ship back)). They followed-up with me after I got the new one, helped get the CVR service switched to new camera, etc. The new one is once again working flawlessly - and I can't say there's anything at all I can say negative about the camera, its operation, the CVR service and certainly the awesome customer service they offer.

    Putting the "Drop" in "Cam"

    • Written by from Glendale

    2 cameras @ $200 = $400 + 1 CVR plan @ $150 = $550. Distance from router = 14'. Walls in between = 0. Disconnected from Wifi = every day. Wifi speed is 21.42 download and 2.14 upload = no excuse.

Don't read another review. This product is unreliable junk.

Liked at first, now I cannot recommend

    • Written by from MILWAUKEE

I bought this camera for my house to monitor my dogs from my office. The younger of the two dogs had gotten to be a little destructive so with the microphone and speakers, easy set up and price it sounded like a no brainer. After a week I liked it so much I bought a second one to have more coverage of the house. All worked pretty well at first with a few connection problems here and there. The dog got yelled at from work, stop destroying completely plus it's just cool to see what they are up to during the day as well as the coming and goings of the dog walkers, cleaning people etc... I have had them for over a month now and the connection issues are really wearing on me. I mainly use the ipad app on my ipad air. I have a smaller 2500 sq ft house with a very strong internet signal in every room. Both cameras are one room away from my newer Apple router and I have the fastest internet available from my cable company. My work internet is the fastest possible connection available due to job requirements. With all that, there is never a period longer than 5 minutes or so where I don't lose a connection. I either get the spinner saying "loading" or the blank "lost connection" screen. Most times it comes back but it takes a while or I switch cameras or close and reopen. They should have had time to work the bugs out of this by now. Yes it's a lot less than installing full home security system and easy to use and set up but what's the point if it can't keep the video rolling for more than a few minutes. I'm past the return period so will probably sell on ebay and look for higher quality.

Sorry Apple not what I need

    • Written by from Virginia Beach

My daughter’s car was involved in a hit and run in front of my house. I bought the cam to record cars driving by so that I can see if the perpetrator drives by again and then get the license plate number. I hooked it to the 12 volt power in my car and the camera worked. However, not only does the camera drop out often, the picture is not clear enough to distinguish a plate number. In my research I read where it is supposed to have enough resolution to see a license plate number. I suppose if the car is not moving that works. On another note. I’m forced to use ICLOUD. I wanted to record right to my computers hard drive and review my video from there to reduce the amount of bandwidth that ends up bogging done my wifi network. Doesn’t look like that’s possible. On another note I want to zoom in on the picture or scroll threw frame by frame so that I could try and make out at least one number on the license plate. However the software is very basic so there is no way to do that. Basically, it is a web cam but you can’t stream to your computer either. Why? It only works on the Wi Fi even if you plug it into your USB port. On another note. My I cloud doesn’t know I have this DROP CAM and I only have a few days left to sign up for I cloud. Yes I’m logged into to apple and I’m logged into Drop cam. I’ll have to come up with another way to catch the guy who drove by and smashed my daughter’s car but this DROP Cam won’t do it.

Don't pay much attention to the negative reviews here

    • Written by from Toronto

I am an electronic surveillance professional working in the field for many years, so I've seen and installed countless different types of analogue, digital, and IP camera systems. The biggest misconception I notice with most people is they expect FAR too much out of these types of cameras. Stop letting Hollywood fool you. I install professional camera setups daily that are exceedingly far more expensive than this product alone, and quite frankly, don't necessarily work as well and aren't nearly as simple to set up. The video quality out of this little device is easily equivalent to that of a unit 5X it's cost. Is this device the best quality home surveillance camera on the market? Of course not. However, the quality you get out of this device for the price you pay is well worth it. As reported, there is a little delay while viewing the camera image online (the reported 10 seconds is a bit of a stretch), but you will get that from ANY camera system viewed remotely. I said "delay", not "lag", like previous reviewers have - in the industry those are different terms with different meanings. The delay is nowhere near substantial enough to no longer be considered real time. This camera can't be accessed on the local network, only via the "cloud", which has it's pros and it's cons. It also can record only in the cloud, which again has it's pros and it's cons. The optional cloud recording feature does have an additional cost, but you get the peace of mind knowing that your footage is in a monitored data centre and not stored in your home, where can be damaged by fire, water, power loss, power surge, theft, etc. It would be nice to have the ability to store locally as well, however you would then have the cost of maintaining a local storage device (with constantly spinning hard-drives, these break more often than one might think, resulting in costly hard-drive replacements). Ultimately, these cameras are fantastic for the price, image quality, streaming quality, uptime, recurring costs, secure connections and recording, and ease of setup. If you're looking for a indoor home monitoring solution, this is your device. Keep in mind that if you have the optional cloud recording service, your camera is streaming constantly through your network connection (I've noticed around 3GB transferred per day - make sure you have enough available bandwidth on your internet plan).

Don't be scared away by bad reviews

    • Written by from Arlington

The camera is great. It works in natural light and the infrared is great at night. We use it as a baby monitor. We used to have an Infant Optics video monitor but its range was severely limited (had problems connecting from second floor to basement) and the monitor kept turning itself off. So to upgrade we read all of the reviews for similar cameras like Foscam and D-Link. Luckily we were not scared away by the negative reviews for Dropcam because it took minutes to set it up and get it working with our Verizon Fios router and our multiple array of istuff (IPhone 4S, iPhone 5S, iPad Air, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air).

None of the supposed "drawbacks" have affected us at all. There is a slight lag because the signal goes out over the internet and then comes back to your iPhone or iPad, but it is only 3-5 seconds. This has not been a problem for us. We also have not cared about any of the other "issues" like not being able to record video locally. We tried the recording service and it worked fine but we stopped using it because we had no need for it.

If you want something to work out of the box with all of your wonderful apple products, then get the dropcam. If you want to fiddle with your wireless network and forward ports and attach NAS devices, then there are obviously other options available.

    Perfect for my needs!

    • Written by from Jersey City

While some of the other reviews have valid points (zoom becomes very distorted, lag in voice feature), this was an exceptional purchase for me...I use it to monitor my 85 year-old mother who has mild dementia. Being able to look in to make sure the oven is off gives me a piece of mind while still allowing her to live an independent life. The video is clear and the set-up was unbelievably easy. The e-mail alerts is another fantastic feature. When short on time all I need to do is check my e-mail to make sure she is moving around. I absolutely love this product and would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family. In regards to the cloud service, $99 a year for 7 days of rolling footage is very reasonable. Holly, in customer service has been extremely helpful and very responsive with my questions.Don't hesitate to buy...

    Easy to Install

    • Written by from Niagara Falls

After struggling for several years with various D-Link cameras this one was an absolute joy to set up and install. It easily integrated with our Mac's and iPad's and the quality of the image and angle of view are impressive. It is still early days but my initial impression is very positive.

BAD Product that could have been great

    • Written by from Santa Monica

Although the good is that it is well engineered, the bad is that the bean-counters apparently took over software development.

You CANNOT RECORD ANY VIDEO LOCALLY. You must pay $100-300 per year for them to store video data (motion-sensed, so not much data). AND, they will only store 7 to 30 days of recordings before purging.

Why, why, why, do they not just let me connect this to through its USB or local Wi-Fi connection to my always-on home computer, to record as much as I want? The software decision that limits CUSTOMER options makes this product an absolute non-starter.

AVOID! Buy a cheap web-cam and find some open-source software instead.

Purchased two of the units. Could not use iPhone to configure, plugged into macbook everything was simple.

Excellent night vision, much improved over the Non pro unit. All the functions can be adjusted remotely.

If unit becomes disconnected I get an email confirming. Had to use tech support once for a disconnection issue. Very

fast response, solved the problem. Got a follow up to confirm problem fixed. Getting a third unit shortly.

Excellent camera. DVR function is very easy to use.

I bought the dropcam for work after a theft. Integrating into the work network was a bit of a challenge since the work network needed some kind of login credential. I then connected an Apple airport express to the work network which provided an always on wifi link for the dropcam. To protect my work network, I placed a password on the airport express. Logged into the airport express once with the dropcam and voila, 24-7 monitoring for thieves!.
I plan to set one up at my aging parent-in-law's kitchen to keep an eye that everything is normal.
I subscribed to the recording service (1 week) which lets me go back and "scrub the tape" every time the camera detects a motion/noise and alerts me by email.
In a nutshell: It's like an Apple product, it just works! :-)

    • Written by from Los Gatos

Love this product to check on my home away from home!
The one thing I would like to see Drop Cam add is some
Smaller base mounts to the cameras so you can mount them in
Window sills that are thinner with blinds , and face them pointing
Outside . Also that brings up the subject of when is Drop Cam coming
Out w-a affordable outside camera ?
I know they are working on it ...
I am very happy with there product so far and find it
Very affordable compared to the comparators .
Keep up the good work drop cam...
