    Great, useful app

    • Written by from Oakland

We car pool with two other families, and Automatic has been helpful to keep track of the miles/days I have driven over the last several months. It has even helped my husband find our car when he couldn't remember where he parked it! It also helps me keep track of gas mileage. Love it!

Insight into driving habits and patterns

    • Written by from Dover

Automatic is a great piece of hardware and software that connects seamlessly to your car and gives you feedback on your driving habits. It's a no hassle integration, in that it simply works in the background and allows you to review at your leisure.

While I haven't put much value in the weekly grades that are given, it's great to review trips, view my cost, view my average miles per gallon, and view the time spent on the trips.

You receive grades based on 1) speeding (70+ mph), 2) hard acceleration, and 3) hard braking. I found grading on this criteria is a little tough. I often times drive on highways where the speed limit is 70+ mph, so I muted the audible alert from the device in this scenario. Also, I drive a manual and have found the hard acceleration to be pretty touchy when going from 1st to 2nd gear. I am sure their grading algorithms will evolve, but for now I don't use them as much.

Overall I love the product and the experience. The interface on the phone is beautiful, and with their recently released API I have full access to all of my data for offline processing.

    Incredibly Useful for the Commuter

    • Written by from Brielle

After getting charged by the dealer $109 to diagnose a software error after my check engine light went on, I went out and grabbed this primarily to avoid another wasted trip to the dealer.

While the check engine light hasn't come on since, the Automatic has proven useful in other ways, most notably by providing insights into my driving experience. For those of us with long commutes, it's been interesting to see which routes result in the most hard brakes / quick accelerations or waste the most gas. After a couple weeks of testing alternate commutes at different times, I found that I could be saving almost 20 minutes and $2 in gas per day on my preferred route vs. an alternative. I haven't used the parking feature yet nor the crash notification feature (nor do I ever want to!).

I've read other reviews where Automatic has communication issues with the iOS app but I have yet to experience that on my end. The app overall is intuitive and seems to have an active developer team & vocal community behind it, both I'd guess are good signs for features to come.

Great Release! Looking forward to updates!

Automatic did a great job releasing this product! Very easy install! I can't wait to see where this product will be by next year! Everything about this product is a positive. Especially if you travel with a personal car and need to track your milage.

Automatic might not do everything you'd fancy it to do (for now), but what they promised on the box works magically great.

Get it for yourself and make it a gift for the loved ones.

    Great device, lots of potential!

    • Written by from West Des Moines

Lets dive into this little car tweaking wonder. It's plug and play makes this a simple operation. I was up and running within 10min. The device correctly gathered my VIN and linked to the App. The App is fairly streamlined and is easily operated. As others have noticed and the description on the packaging, this little guy looks for three major driving habits. 1) driving speed 2) hard braking & 3) fast accelerating. They have not clear scope as to what their margins are (other than the under 70mph). I would be nice to have more flexibility with the settings, but this is supposed to save you fuel. If they've done the calculations correctly perhaps that isn't an issue, but as a tech guy, it's always nice to have options.

It would be nice to be able to have real time driving stats, but the app computes fairly fast after the trip has ended, not much of a problem for me, as it's one less thing to distract my driving. I would love to for this app to have a settings tab to identify if you're using your vehicle for work. It would be nice for the road warrior to know what he/she is driving for mpg, time. This would allow you to report more easily for taxes at the end of the year (all documented!)

My only gripe would be that I have two vehicles and would love to just unplug this one and swap it in and go. It seems that you lose all your data if you do this, instead you have to purchase a second unit. We shouldn't have to purchase a second unit, nor should we lose our data for which we have been accumulating. Would love to see an off app storage for data.

All in all I am really loving this concept and functionality of this neat car tool. Hopefully there will be much more to come in the coming year!

    one major flaw

    • Written by from San Francisco

it's really great, lets start off by making clear. It makes sounds to remind you of good habits whether it is connected to your phone or not. its just about everything you want it to be (and a great deal for the price too). BUT, the bluetooth connectivity is terrible. you essentially have to launch this thing every time you drive, that's how unreliable the bluetooth updating is. Sometimes if I happen to have left it running in the background, and go drive, it will work. But by habit I close all apps I'm not using anytime soon, so it misses a lot of trips in my car. I suspect if they had it their way it would, but bigger issues in iOS7's (and power consumption) limitations won't allow it. So, with that said, I Still own it, and still love it.

Unreliable! A huge disappointment. But I gave it a try.

    • Written by from Norwood

The tech is cool... when it works. The device seems temperamental at best and it's hard to determine whether this is a hardware or software issue. A few observations:

    - This device has a long "break in period" where it downloads updates and/or gathers initial data to work with your vehicle. It may not actually give you useful information for a week or so. Apparently this is stated deep within the website and user manual, but i didn't notice it before i purchased.

    - Approximately 40% of my trips never ended up being recorded. I don't know if this was a bluetooth issue or what. It may have been that I was using the GPS to run Google Maps while the Automatic App was running. I was unable to get this resolved by tech support.

    - The interface cute and creative... but is less than intuitive and doesn't give you the deep diagnostic insight that other devices & apps offer. It's not a dashboard enhancement device.

    - It theoretically calculates gas price for any given trip, but does not allow you to input the price that you pay. It gathers this info online from nearby gas stations.... so i don't trust the data.

    - The audio alerts come from the device, not your phone. because it's tucked underneath by my legs, i never heard it. Defeats the purpose. Also, alerts are not customizable.

    - You cannot use for multiple vehicles without losing all the data. I understand they want to sell one device for each car you drive, but this seems unreasonable.

    - Just plain disappointing. I returned it.

    Great customer support... Inconsistent product

    • Written by from Centereach

My device connected to my car just fine and the phone read it. I kept getting the error "invalid 6-digit pin" when I clearly typed it correctly. Customer support was great but could not fix the issue. I noticed a few others had the same issue. This is a great idea but I'd wait to buy one until the developers gets it right and puts out consistently operational hardware.

    Fantastic... within reason

    • Written by from Chapel Hill

This device will certainly pay for itself. This will happen in two ways. First it will make you cognizant of the dollar value (at regular prices) of gasoline you spend driving to and fro. When you see the monetary value attached to your penchant for once daily jaunts to Target and the Mall, suddenly buying in bulk will have added value and you might actually walk instead of drive (health benefit too!). Second, should your check engine light come on, as mine did on my Mazda 3 last night, you will be able to possibly (grain of salt for the mechanically disinclined) fix the problem. In my case it was a loose fuel cap that caused a check engine light and a EVAP (emissions) error. Mazda dealerships in my area charge between $32.99 and $42.99 to do diagnostics, even under warranty mind you. This means that being able to remotely identify the problem, do research about it (all right from your phone on the side of the road), and reset the error without a visit to the dealership (my wallet cringes) is REALLY VALUABLE. Most modern cars will work with the device and I can say that I hope that eventually we won't actually need this device and auto manufacturers will actually include this technology in ALL cars. Until that day has come this device will keep you driving along happily. (I didn't mention the safety features but it makes me happy to know that my wife will be looked after if she is driving our car one day and - god forbid - something happens)

    Needs a bit more work

    • Written by from Bemidji

I hooked it up to my truck and at first seemed to work fine, but then right away it has trouble connecting to my bluetooth. It sometimes works and then most of the time I have to monkey around with it if I want to record a driving session. I also think it doesn't work well with cold weather so if you live in the North, it will have trouble connecting to the blue tooth. Great concept, needs more testing to iron out the kinks. I am hoping during the warmer weather I see some improvement.

    Interesting idea, not quite there

    • Written by from Cupertino

    What it does well:
The app is easy to set up and link to the device. Once in, you have a basic dashboard view of your trips and your score. It gives you a guestimate of the price of the gas you've used based on average price to purchase at the pump determined from a proprietary source they don't disclose.

    Room for improvement:

There is zero transparency on what the device does. Once you start driving for the first time, you lose the instructions for how to use the app. There is no link in the app for the privacy policy on how your data is used. The app will update the firmware in the device, but it will stop working and recording data while this is happening. There's no notification that the device will stop recording nor any way to force an update.

Once the information is in the app, there's nothing you can do with it. You can't adjust the price of the gas based on what you actually paid, especially useful if you use a card like Texaco/Chevron which adjusts the price of the gas if you pay cash or credit. You can't dump the data out, and you can't access it from a website. You can add names to destinations (work, home, etc), but you can't do anything beyond that.

The audio notifications are... interesting. The device beeps when it detects behavior that should be corrected like speeding, jackrabbit starts, and hard braking. However, every instance of hard braking I had was an emergency situation with cars jumping out in front of me. Nothing's better than an emergency with a klaxon going off at you.

Finally, because the app is constantly using location services, I found you better have your phone plugged in to the 12v port in your car, or you'll have a dead battery on arrival.

Mildly useful way to teach you how to drive better, not very useful for data junkies.

I found the device was preset with preferences unacceptable to me. For example there is no way to adjust the speed limit beep from 70 mph. No real time data is delivered at all, so there is no feedback at all while you are driving. Not until you are done with your trip, then it is too late to adjust. The factory dash instruments on my Prius are vastly more helpful. Fortunately, Automatic.com allowed me to return it for a full refund. A waste of money IMO.

    Not that impressive

    • Written by from Exeter

Lots of potential but this app really doesn't do too much for you. Most cars already supply info as to milage etc and the older cars that do not have this info won't typically work with this app. Would be nice if this app would store all trips for the year of which could be used to track mileage for tax purposes.

Device lacks accuracy, product support is superficial

    • Written by from Chandler

Automatic is a good idea, not realized in current product and software. Find device fails to connect to my iPhone resulting is missed data, and mpg is grossly in error based on fuel consumed per files traveled.

Limited ability to contact Automatic. Their web site is disjointed at best and nothing more than advertisement for the product. Did receive a response to mpg problem that stated a software upgrade was in progress that resolves problem. Not true... nothing has changed. mpg continues to be less then half of actual calculated value.

Would suggest one hold off on purchasing Automatic at this time. $100 is to much to spend on a product that provides misinformation and does not always connect.

    Does nothing important

    • Written by from Mckees Rocks

I had the automatic for 2 days. A drive from Pittsburgh to North Carolina. It was n a 2011 Dodge Charger R/T. At no point does the automatic give you any information that your dash cluster doesn't. Average mpg, miles traveled, distance and cost. There are free apps for that and most dash clusters do that as well. It missed the drive when it dumped from WV to NC so it was useless.

The only way the Automatic would be worth anything would be if it monitored engine parameters. Oil pressure, trans heat, fuel/air ratio, etc.

Everything that the automatic does, so does your dash cluster in most cars. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

    Very disappointed

    • Written by from Cambridge

I really wanted to love this product. It greatly disappoints me that it is sold on the apple store, as it does not meet the minimum experience standards someone would expect of an apple product.

I didn't buy this product to log half my trips, or a portion of my trips. I didn't expect I would have to open the app each time I get in the car to make sure it connected with the device. I didn't expect I would need to have internet access every time I turn the car off to save a trip.

The lack of documentation would be fine if it just worked, but it took a lot of digging just to understand why it didn't work most of the time.

I severely hope you do not have to use the 'forgot my password' experience. I have not experience such a bad UX in many years.

    Seriously disappointing app.

This is a great product...when it works. I've had it for a few months and it records about half of the trips I take. I've contacted customer support many times, but their troubleshooting has not improved the success rate. The software and perhaps the hardware needs some major reworking before the product can live up it's potential. I use an iPhone 5S on a reliable network in a major city.
