Great Design with below average quality!

    • Written by from Atlanta

If you're looking for a slim backpack for mobility as I was, this would seem like the perfect one. And for the first month it was.
    (PROS)
The best part about it is the design. My Macbook Pro 13' fit perfectly in the main pocket with my iPad also fitting snug in the connecting compartment. The front part of the bag has a built in "grid it" organizer that held my HDD, MBP charger, and any other (small) items that I like to carry around. I travel so mobility is very important to me and this bag did the job for the most part.
    (CONS)
The zipper on the front compartment broke after about 5 weeks! I was able to repair it, however, I would be very cautious before buying for this reason alone!! The only other complaint I have with it is the fact that I carry headphones with me that can't be stored in this bag because of its slim design. This bag wasn't at all designed for bulky items! So keep that in mind before purchasing as well.

    Elegant. Stylish. Simple.

    • Written by from DAVIE

I use this backpack for College, and it shines when compared to the thousands of Jansport and Herschel Bags. Not only in style, but also in functionality. I am able to hold a thin notebook, Macbook Pro with Retina Display, iPad Air, pens, pencils, flashcards, and a iPod in well under 3 inches. Most of my coursework is done using  Products, with the exception of Math where I need paper, so organization is key. The ability to grid my accessories onto the 'wall' allows for a very simple yet highly effective layout, making it easier than ever to find and remove accessories (like pens and headphones) while allowing for more room than ever to put more accessories, while retaining the extreme thinness of the product. Trust me on this one, this bag destroys everything in the market because it is able to hold a large amount of technology while maintaining a stylishly thin design.

If Apple were to make a bag, this would be it.

It is a great backpack but...

    • Written by from Longwood

This is by far one of the best backpacks that I have purchased but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. I keep my 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display in this bag and it secures it perfectly fine. The Grid-It section helps me keep all my accessories organized. I don't use this bag everyday and I only wear it to and from my Apt. to my car and my car to a designated area. With such little use after 6 months of owning the bag the seams are already ripping off on it. I'm not rough with this bag and I don't use it everyday yet the seams on the straps are already coming off. I'm debating whether or not I want to purchase a new Cocoon bag or look elsewhere for a solution.

    Cool yes - Durable no

    • Written by from Suffield

As others have said it is well designed and great to pack a bunch of gear. I could pack my gps training gear, tech toys and chargers in a slim organized manner.

However, something that uses the word ballistic in it's description should not fall apart so quickly. The shell stayed together, but not much else. Interior lining split within two months and 11 months in a zipper fell off. Waterproof covers are falling apart and seams are not durable. I now know why this would never be carried at LL Bean. They would have almost as many returns as sales. I use it a lot, but a backpack should not fall apart in a year. No rainproof jacket I've owned fell apart this quickly after getting beat up in the granite mountains of the North East and this just rode in my car and a couple of plane trips.

Still gave it three stars because it is the best organizing backpack with a slim profile that I've seen. Holds a laptop, iPad and a couple small file folders with all the gear strapped in.

    Great Design/Idea - Terrible Construction/Quality

    • Written by from Newberg

I was so excited to have a bag that wasn't as thick as a backpack. You can imagine my disappointment when, after 3 months of VERY light use, I had to send in for a replacement due to the outside zipper separating from the material.

Thinking I just got a lemon, I was once again excited to have my Slim bag back. After using the replacement bag for just a few more months (again... very light use. I go to my office and then I go home. That's it), I have the very same problem. Outside zipper has separated from the material, which renders the entire bag completely useless as all of the contents in the Grid-It can now just fall right out of the bag.

Keep in mind when I bought this bag, it was $99.99. For comparison, I bought a Nike backpack for $55 in 2008. That's the bag that I put my laptop in this morning because my Cocoon is useless. If this bag were $15, it'd be worth it. Not for $80-100. Don't waste your money.

    Terrible Quality

    • Written by from Huntsville

This was just delivered 24 Dec 2014 for a Christmas gift. But I'll be walking it back to the local Apple Store for refund. It's no wonder they didn't have any in stock when I was shopping. They probably didn't have any that were in sellable condition. There are 3 obvious issues with this bag that should have kept if from ever being shipped:

    - there s a 2-inch hole in the webbing material on the back side of the carry handle ( this appears to have been cut with a knife)
    - there s a 1-inch hole in the material on the top side of the carry handle (this appears to have been cut with a knife)
    - there's a 7-inch tear just behind the left corner zipper that opens to the Grid-It compartment.

The most casual amount of QA would have caught any of these issues. Can there possibly have been any incentive for shipping this backpack(regardless of it's condition)?

It seems the only added value in ordering this through Apple will be the ease of walking it in for refund. I expected much more from products ordered through Apple.

Can't rate it zero stars? OK, keep that in mind when you see the 1-star ratings here and elsewhere.

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Nepean

I purchased this backpack in the fall. The design looked great, it was just right for my commute to work. However after just a month, the backpack started to tear at the straps. The waterproofing seal around the zippers also started to peel almost immediately. Finally, the zipper ripped apart. Almost $100 for a backpack and only 4 months of use. Do not buy this bag.

Best Slim backpack i've had to date!

    • Written by from Milton

Hello. I am writing this review after having this bag for over 4 weeks. It is simply amazing and I get compliments everywhere I take it. The Cocoon elastic grid it absolutely amazing and can hold everything that I put in it. Currently I carry the following items all the time with me: MacBook Pro charger, wires, ethernet adapter, Thunderbolt DVI adapter, apple iPod, iPad charger and even with all these items, its still slim (albeit it is about 4.5" (1" more) than described) and have room for more. In the main compartment I carry a 13" MacBook Pro retina with a protective case, iPad Air and theres still room for a small note pad or similar. I have not experienced any Zipper issues. I cannot comment on the water repellent properties of the zipper but feels like it can take it and the seal is tight. The straps are well proportioned and comfortable for wearing when travelling. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

    Great Product

    • Written by from bethel

I have had my Macbook Pro, iPad, iPod Touch & all of the cords & chargers, as well as a few other items in this bag for almost a year now. I have had no quality or workmanship issues & everything stays neatly organized & safe from damage. I have spent no time searching for any of the items kept in this bag at all! It looks great, is just the right size, works great and mine, at least, seems to holding up quite well!

I bought this backpack for my son, he likes it very much because of the grid ideas and enough space for 15" MacBook and books.

    Straps are bad

Should have read the reviews. Stitching on strap is halfway torn, about to lose the whole strap. While the backpack worked I loved all the organization features.

    Useless bag

    • Written by from MANHATTAN

I bought this bag because I thought it is great to carry my macbook and couple of small items in a stylish way. I used this bag only 2 times, yes 2 times and it start tearing. I cannot carry anything with it now. I will refund it and waste another hour with apple support team. What a product!!!

    Great Concept, Terrible Quality

    • Written by from Arlington

The bag's size and the organization of accessories is great but the quality of the stitching and zippers is terrible. I returned the first one after a week because the shoulder strap and handle started ripping away from the top of the bag. I got another one in the hope that mine was just defective. No such luck. The same thing happened and now the material around the zipper is ripping. I have sewed the straps back on only to find another seam on the bag starting to burst open. Really disappointed that the quality is so bad because I love the concept.

    Great bag, poor quality

    • Written by from Seattle

I purchased this from the Apple store and used for a month and the strap has come apart from the bag. It appears the stitching is just not done very well. Looking at the other reviews, this is a common problem. Very disappointing. To make matters worse, Warranty repair costs $10.

As far as carrying your Mac items go, nothing compares.

    • Written by from Edmonton

I've have this backpack for almost a year now and love the idea and concept of it. When I just need to take my Mac, iPad, iPhone and accessories, this is by far the best backpack I've ever had. With that being said, just recently my stitching on one of my arm straps have broken, exposing the inner padding. Other than that it's been awesome. If you plan on using this for school and expect to carry books around in it, it's probably not the backpack for you. I don't have binders and to get both my book and Mac into the backpack for my day is a battle; other than those two things though I have no complaints. The backpack is lined with soft material and the elastic holder compartment is genius. If you're looking for a unique backpack to carry your Mac around while keeping you Mac accessories organized this backpack is for you.

    Don't be fooled!

    • Written by from New York

The zipper started to go after 1 month. Now in month three, the stitching on one of the straps has come loose. While I love the design of this bag - particularly the built-in grid and slim look - the quality/durability is unacceptable. The negative reviews are right on target. Apple is failing its customers by continuing to offer this product.
