    Speck 13' SmartShell Case

    • Written by from Green Bay

I've used this case since the first day that I bought my macbook which was almost a year from now. I've had no problems with it, and I thought that everything was perfect...until about 5 days ago I decided to take off the cover to see if there was any dust. I was expecting to find dust, NOT mold! These Speck cases are not compatible with the aluminum on Mac's. There are permanent markings and scribbled looking engravings from....I don't even know what, but it was definitely not from me. I looks like some type of acid reaction? There were also white spots all over (top and bottom), from the mold. I did some research and found that another person had the same problem as I have using the Speck Case. I thought that paying the $50 and putting this case on my computer would keep it from getting permanent markings and damage, but oh boy was I wrong! Now I have markings all over, and I'm super upset. Apple should not sell a product that is not compatible with their own. I would recommend getting just a traditional bag or pouch with a zip so your Mac can breathe, instead of buying this case. It's way cheaper and safer for your laptop. Who knows, maybe I am the only one experiencing this...but I know for sure that I'm not using my Speck case again!

I spent around $50 for this case, I thought it would be the best for my new mac. Recently I discovered MOLD on the case and my laptop! Not only was there mold, but some sort of reaction has left dents in my laptop!

    Not perfect - beware!!

    • Written by from Warsaw

I would agree with the previous comment regarding mould and scratches on the front side and base.

I have used this case from day one an mould has appeared and scratches, i followed the manufacturers instructions and washed the case periodically.

If you think this case will keep your macbook scratch free - look somewhere else.

Apple - you should do your homework.

if I could post pics on here you could see for yourself.

I will be contacting Speck regarding this issue.

    Speck Case Mold Problem

    • Written by from Merrimack

I've had this case for approximately 1 year now, and like other users, I have had problems with black mold spots on the bottom of my computer. I wipe it down occasionally with Clorox wipes in the hopes that it will kill whatever is growing and eating (yes eating!) into the aluminum case. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to ditch the speck case. Disappointing!

    Solid Case

    • Written by from Cleveland

I just got this today, it seems pretty solid fit for the Macbook Pro 13' Retina display. I can't comment on the hinges holding the case together yet and if they will break. I will update if they do. It fits like a glove, adds very little bulk to the minimalistic design of the macbook pro retina. All ports are open just as shown in the pictures, there are no sharp edges that i can feel, you can see the apple logo through the case just as stated. As of right now i have no complaints about this case, but i will update this review if it does turn out to be a bad buy.

Beautiful colour but really disappointed by the quality... I put it only one time in my backpack, not in the same pocket as my keys (or any potentially dangerous item for the case), and the top part is already all scratched. And because of the vivid colors, the scratches are even more visible...

You wouldn't expect your derriere to stay clean just because you cover it with underwear, would you?

I've had this case for 3 years now and haven't had any issues. Plus, it makes my MacBook Pro look great up on stage when I'm performing.

I can't help but notice that most reviewers with mold issues live in areas with relatively high humidity to begin with. And, I highly suspect that they more than likely have mold issues just in general because of that.

Mold is a living organism that needs moisture, nutrients, and a comfy cozy place to live. The case certainly provides a comfy cozy space, but doesn't create mold by itself. Moisture in the air, especially warm humid air, and dirt of some sort provides mold spores something to feed on. That's what's causing the mold.

So, if you are considering getting this case, keep in mind that there is some level of upkeep involved and you're gonna have to pull it off every now and then to clean things up just like you do when you pull yourself off the pot! :)

    It what you expect...good product

Pretty standard hard snap case for MacBooks. This case has a matte satin finish and is semi-translucent you can see the apple light up through the case.

Really good case with perfect fitting an a great texture !

    • Written by from Cary

I have this case / cover for my laptop 13" with retina. It really does not add bulk at all. Fits perfectly with a "click". The texture is really not slippery and has a nice feel to it. The apple logo is visible from the back which make this my fav case. Now I feel much better knowing that I wont be accidentally putting on any scratches to my laptop and yet keeping its cool. It actually makes the laptop look really cool. Also uTube has an in depth review which I saw before purchasing it. *****

I bought this case a year ago, I am quite gentle with it as it houses my retina display macbook. Even though I am gentle with it, it has broken twice. Speck offers a warranty where you send them back your broken case and they will replace it, although this is a good deal, it is still time consuming to get is shipped and you have to pay $15 (that they don't reimburse you for) to send if off to them also. I definitely would not purchase it again.

Top quality , but mold comes togheter

    • Written by from Miami Beach

I had 4 other cases from other brands.
The Speck Case has the superior quality material , is the most durable and looks good.

But some mold is starting to appear on both parts( bottom and top of the device). So far it is not a problem to remove it . But it is really weird.

    What Mold?

    • Written by from Vacaville

Ive had this case on the whole 6 months I've owned my MacBook Pro Retina 15". I read the reviews here just today, stating mold was eating the chassis and was immediately spooked. I removed my Speck Black case and don't have any mold spots on my machine or any problems with the aluminum chassis of the machine like some other people have stated?

This case has kept my machine good as new underneath? I'll keep an eye out but I have had zero problems with this case in 6months of use.

    breaks way too easily

    • Written by from Rochester Hills

Bought this 14 months ago. After 10 months, noticed the corners had broken off. I don't take the computer out of the house, and treat it very carefully. I returned the case, and several weeks later, received a replacement under warranty. One week later, noticed the corners had broken off, on the new case! I ignored it, since I don't take it out of the house. Just picked it up to use - the bottom half of the case fell off! Extremely poor material - cannot take even the lightest amount of use.

    Didn't last long enough!

    • Written by from SITKA

When I purchased my MacBook Pro, I also bought this case to go along with it. I thought it was going to last me a long time, but it happened to not last for a year. It started to crack on the side. I don't know if it's due to how thin the side is, but it eventually broke off. Today, I went back to the reviews and it showed comments about mold. After reading them, I instantly took off my case to see if it was true. I observed the bottom and there happened to be mold. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying this case for their MacBook.

    Looks isn't everything!

    • Written by from København Ø

I have had the Speck smartshell for about a year and have enjoyed the black, sleek look!!
But I can only agree with the rest about the mold problems!
Tonight my smartshell broke, when I removed it to dust off my Mac:-( I went online to see, if I could find a new cover, that was more sturdy and I saw all of these reviews about mold and easy breaks.
I live in Denmark, Scandinavia and you can hardly call Denmark a country with a humid climate - on the contrary! And I NEVER bring my Mac outside the house, on vacation, into the bathroom or kitchen, where it can be humid. I clean/dust off my Mac every 2-3 weeks (remove the shell) and still there is mold, which also has resulted in scratches - even though I clean it carefully with a soft cloth.
To compare I also have my iPad mini (2yrs now) with a similar cover, but different brand. I bring it everywhere, travelling around the world in my job (lots of humid places). I clean that too regularily and NEVER had a sign of mold on that.
Something is very WRONG!!! And I can not recommend this cover for the Mac Pro! Looks is not everything!

All you people complaining are idiots.

    • Written by from Edmonton

Whoever buys this product and doesn't take the time to clean the computer and case once every week or two and expects everything to be in perfect condition are idiots.

    Doesn't fit right

    • Written by from Buffalo Grove

Had to go to Apple Store to buy this case since the cover (from InCase) I had on my other MacBook was not available online. Long story short - Brand new case, doesn't fit. The top cover snaps on just fine, but the bottom rear doesn't snap in place (both left and right sides). It seems that the mold is off. Should've read these reviews first. I'm also kind of upset with Apple store for carrying subpar product like this.

Great fit, nice material, but the headphone jack isn't fully accessible

    • Written by from Warszawa

It snaps on very easily, fits perfectly. The only "but" I have is that it doesn't look like on the pictures. It leaves very little space for the headphone jack, so if you have a digital (jack) audio cable you may not be able to plug it in "clamshell mode" as the case is blocking the entrance. I've checked at my local Apple reseller and all the Speck cases (for the 13-inch model), regardless of their colour function that way. Which is too bad, because apart from that it's a perfect case for the Mac.
