    Great case
    Great firm control
However the bottom portion gave out completely
It all started with the snap on portions on the bottom left and right, follow by the corners
The top cover is still working and has protected me from TSA's scratches.
I would not recommend it this product as its expensive and does not last longer than 18 months.

    Speck case for 5 years

    • Written by from jersey city

I have only purchased one case (satin) when I first purchased my macbook pro 5 years ago. I am somewhat in the middle with my feelings in regards to my purchase of the speck case. Its relatively inexpensive and does have a sense of style and sleekness. Some of the grips did snap a year and half into having the case, however the other grips compensated well for the ones that broke off so I did not feel the need to purchase a new one. However, I brought my laptop everywhere and did not take the most optimal care of my laptop and both the case and laptop are going pretty strong. A downside to owning this product is the molding inside of the case! I do not know how to remove the stains, but I have heard there are ways to remove it.

Protective but does not last long (about 8 months)

    • Written by from Mustang

I don't have to worry about my computer being protected while using this case. It is a great case, except they don't last as long as I would like. I am on my second case and it just broke. Mine have lasted an average of about 8 months. The problem is the grips for bottom-front of the computer can't handle much strain. Other than that, I enjoy this case and its protection.

    Looks isn't everything!

    • Written by from København Ø

I have had the Speck smartshell for about a year and have enjoyed the black, sleek look!!
But I can only agree with the rest about the mold problems!
Tonight my smartshell broke, when I removed it to dust off my Mac:-( I went online to see, if I could find a new cover, that was more sturdy and I saw all of these reviews about mold and easy breaks.
I live in Denmark, Scandinavia and you can hardly call Denmark a country with a humid climate - on the contrary! And I NEVER bring my Mac outside the house, on vacation, into the bathroom or kitchen, where it can be humid. I clean/dust off my Mac every 2-3 weeks (remove the shell) and still there is mold, which also has resulted in scratches - even though I clean it carefully with a soft cloth.
To compare I also have my iPad mini (2yrs now) with a similar cover, but different brand. I bring it everywhere, travelling around the world in my job (lots of humid places). I clean that too regularily and NEVER had a sign of mold on that.
Something is very WRONG!!! And I can not recommend this cover for the Mac Pro! Looks is not everything!

Great fit, nice material, but the headphone jack isn't fully accessible

    • Written by from Warszawa

It snaps on very easily, fits perfectly. The only "but" I have is that it doesn't look like on the pictures. It leaves very little space for the headphone jack, so if you have a digital (jack) audio cable you may not be able to plug it in "clamshell mode" as the case is blocking the entrance. I've checked at my local Apple reseller and all the Speck cases (for the 13-inch model), regardless of their colour function that way. Which is too bad, because apart from that it's a perfect case for the Mac.

    Awesome Case

    • Written by from Columbus

I got this case about 3 weeks ago when I brought my first macbook. It fits very well on my computer and feels great. I got it in black and you can actually still see the apple sign when it lights up.

    Good, but be CAREFUL!!

    • Written by from Allen

I bought this to protect my MacBook Pro fron scratches. However, when I put it on, the snap scratched the corner of the computer. Also, if you take it off, be careful! It scratches the surface if the Mac very easily!!

    Looks sharp. However,

    • Written by from Lincoln Park

I recently purchased this case for my -Late 2014 MBP Retina 13 inch (A1502) and it fits very well. However, I have not attempted to remove the case but I am certain that it will be a little difficult because of the hinges. With that being said, I rate my case four out of five stars. It feels nice and looks very sharp. Although removing it may be a bit of a challenge, I would still highly recommend this product to others.

    Best thing for your Mac

    • Written by from Ocean City

I've had this case for 4 years. It's true, you have to take it off and clean your mac once in a while. This case saved my mac from nasty scratches, keys, so on. The mould thing is not that true if you clean it, but then ask yourself about the temperature variations inside the case, specks of dust and air humidity.

    Didn't last long enough!

    • Written by from SITKA

When I purchased my MacBook Pro, I also bought this case to go along with it. I thought it was going to last me a long time, but it happened to not last for a year. It started to crack on the side. I don't know if it's due to how thin the side is, but it eventually broke off. Today, I went back to the reviews and it showed comments about mold. After reading them, I instantly took off my case to see if it was true. I observed the bottom and there happened to be mold. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying this case for their MacBook.

You wouldn't expect your derriere to stay clean just because you cover it with underwear, would you?

I've had this case for 3 years now and haven't had any issues. Plus, it makes my MacBook Pro look great up on stage when I'm performing.

I can't help but notice that most reviewers with mold issues live in areas with relatively high humidity to begin with. And, I highly suspect that they more than likely have mold issues just in general because of that.

Mold is a living organism that needs moisture, nutrients, and a comfy cozy place to live. The case certainly provides a comfy cozy space, but doesn't create mold by itself. Moisture in the air, especially warm humid air, and dirt of some sort provides mold spores something to feed on. That's what's causing the mold.

So, if you are considering getting this case, keep in mind that there is some level of upkeep involved and you're gonna have to pull it off every now and then to clean things up just like you do when you pull yourself off the pot! :)

    breaks way too easily

    • Written by from Rochester Hills

Bought this 14 months ago. After 10 months, noticed the corners had broken off. I don't take the computer out of the house, and treat it very carefully. I returned the case, and several weeks later, received a replacement under warranty. One week later, noticed the corners had broken off, on the new case! I ignored it, since I don't take it out of the house. Just picked it up to use - the bottom half of the case fell off! Extremely poor material - cannot take even the lightest amount of use.

All you people complaining are idiots.

Whoever buys this product and doesn't take the time to clean the computer and case once every week or two and expects everything to be in perfect condition are idiots.

Top quality , but mold comes togheter

    • Written by from Miami Beach

I had 4 other cases from other brands.
The Speck Case has the superior quality material , is the most durable and looks good.

But some mold is starting to appear on both parts( bottom and top of the device). So far it is not a problem to remove it . But it is really weird.

    What Mold?

    • Written by from Vacaville

Ive had this case on the whole 6 months I've owned my MacBook Pro Retina 15". I read the reviews here just today, stating mold was eating the chassis and was immediately spooked. I removed my Speck Black case and don't have any mold spots on my machine or any problems with the aluminum chassis of the machine like some other people have stated?

This case has kept my machine good as new underneath? I'll keep an eye out but I have had zero problems with this case in 6months of use.

I bought this case a year ago, I am quite gentle with it as it houses my retina display macbook. Even though I am gentle with it, it has broken twice. Speck offers a warranty where you send them back your broken case and they will replace it, although this is a good deal, it is still time consuming to get is shipped and you have to pay $15 (that they don't reimburse you for) to send if off to them also. I definitely would not purchase it again.

    Speck Case Mold Problem

    • Written by from Merrimack

I've had this case for approximately 1 year now, and like other users, I have had problems with black mold spots on the bottom of my computer. I wipe it down occasionally with Clorox wipes in the hopes that it will kill whatever is growing and eating (yes eating!) into the aluminum case. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to ditch the speck case. Disappointing!

Beautiful colour but really disappointed by the quality... I put it only one time in my backpack, not in the same pocket as my keys (or any potentially dangerous item for the case), and the top part is already all scratched. And because of the vivid colors, the scratches are even more visible...

    Not perfect - beware!!

    • Written by from Warsaw

I would agree with the previous comment regarding mould and scratches on the front side and base.

I have used this case from day one an mould has appeared and scratches, i followed the manufacturers instructions and washed the case periodically.

If you think this case will keep your macbook scratch free - look somewhere else.

Apple - you should do your homework.

if I could post pics on here you could see for yourself.

I will be contacting Speck regarding this issue.
