Outstanding product, great practical use of today's technology.

Great product. Easy DIY installation and set up. Helps save energy automatically by adjusting temp settings to your impute, either manually or automatically when you are home. It learns your comfortable/preferred temp settings rather than having to program it.
And you can completely control it (temp settings, heat or cool on and off, etc) from your iPhone or iPad.

Although not cheap, I bought 2 first generation units for our new house (one for up stairs, one for down stairs) and have been very impressed with easy of operation. I sit in bed at night and adjust either thermostat using my iPhone or iPad (or sit in a hotel room miles away) and see the outside temp and adjust the thermostat if it has not already learned my preferences.

This product is truly amazing. I had a little trouble getting it to work with my system but the nest help center walked me through it on the phone. I would recommend it to everyone.

    Really great, easy to install

    • Written by from HASTINGS

This product was simple to install. I am by no means a home improvement do it yourself type. I've never even thought of taking apart my thermostat before. However, this was very easy to install and has been a joy to use. i'm very impressed and happy with this product.

    Nest 1st generation

I've had my Nest thermostat since December 2011, and have been very pleased with the results. Also, glad to see that even though new version came out - I still get same software updates and functionality. 2 neighbors have since bought one also.

One of the few products I've ever bought that exceeds the hype.

    • Written by from LOS ANGELES

    1. Absolutely love the smart software - I've been using for about 5 months and the bills are about 15% lower than last year. The nest should pay for itself in savings before 2 years.

    2. Love being able to control from my phone. I recently forgot to turn off the heat when I left town. And when I smugly went to the app to do it, it had already gone to auto-away when it stopped detecting me in the house.

    3. Design. I get curious and positive comments about it from just about every visitor.

I feel like an iPhone got my old thermostat drunk, took advantage, and 9 months later the Nest was born. Great product, giving as gifts to folks and brother this holiday.

    It Just Works & Saves

    • Written by from York

Have three 1st gen units since last December and they just work together. They may cost a bit more but here in PA I saved over $300 just this summer on our cooling costs and came out of last winter with a credit to our nat gas heating cost. The Airwave feature alone makes you wonder what took so long for this feature to come out of the industry. One nice thing is that these units get a software update once released automatically. I feature I wish it had was the ability to just turn on the fan without turning on heating or cooling.

Like others stated pretty straight forward to install just make sure your system is compatible. The app makes it easy to control while away. In the past while on summer vacation I had someone come in and turn the AC so the house would be cool once back but this year I was able to take it down from 80 degrees in steps rather then all at once.

    Fabulous

    • Written by from Pleasanton

We LOVE the nest - I installed it myself, processed 2 updates and I couldn't be happier. We put our nest in the home we purchased to retire to. We aren't spending enough time there yet BUT with our Nest we can set to warm or cool for when we arrive. It "learned" our habits and has already paid us back the investment.
I did have to contact customer service when I was installing and they were GREAT - helped me out and made sure it was running perfectly.
So, what are you waiting for? You will be wondering why you hesitated. DO IT !
( I don't know any employees at Nest but I'd LOVE to work for them that's how much I love this product!)

    Wow! Smart product. Great start.

    • Written by from Liberty Township

Nest is a GREAT start! Here's how it could be even better.

    Missing features:
    -Outside temp displayed on screen.
-Forecast (hourly and or weekly) displayed on screen.
-Integrated usage of hourly temp web predictions to anticipate whether or not it needs to heat or cool or if it can just wait for the home temperature to adjust naturally. Why do I want my thermostat to cool my house 1 hour before the temp is predicted to drop? Nest has access to this data via WiFi.
-Phone app GPS to learn when I'm away and when I'm headed home.
-Developer app support (3rd party app development). I don't need to play Angry Birds on my thermostat but I would like to learn what a community of developers would dream up. I'd buy a cool app or two.
-Centralized NEST hosted forum for feature suggestions and bug troubleshooting.
-Monthly usage summary that suggests slight reprogramming changes that could maximize efficiency and instant implementation if user confirms.

Easy to Install! Save a lot of Money...

    • Written by from Washington

My old neighbors had the first generation NEST and they swore by it. They told me that in a couple of months (3 in total) they had already saved as much money as the NEST had cost them. I was a little suspicious of the hype behind it all, but after the second generation NEST came out, I finally gave in and bought it.
It took a little more than 30 minutes to install and just watching the video that NEST has on the website is enough for you to do it.
After a week, it learns your pattern and makes one initial one for you to save money, but it never really stops to learn. Its AWAY mode is brilliant and having access to it on your iPhone or computer is priceless... I would highly recommend it to anyone...

    Nest

This product is amazing! You can control your thermostat from wherever you are whenever you are. Don't worry if you've been gone for 2 weeks and you think all the air conditioning has gone to waste and will cost you a ton of money because with the Nest you can put it to a certain setting so that it will save you energy and money.

C wire needed but then all is good

    • Written by from Glenwood

Good - easy to use free app, sleek, simple, great phone help

Bad - needed C wire, suggested Pro install would bump cost into other more robust system price range such as Honeywell

I was lucky I had an unused wire in the wall and was able to run 24v from my plenum heater panal. Happy now, but almost did not work. Talked with a local installer who said he always ran C wires to the unit.

Once its properly installed it is great.

    • Written by from Maple Ridge

I had a two wire thermostat, gas fired furnace installation.
While the instructions state that this type of installation is straight forward and will work, it quickly became apparent that this is not the case.
The unit has an internal re-chargeable battery that charges itself while the heating circuit is closed and the furnace is running when in used a two-wire thermostat system. The problem with this is that the heating system may not be active for a long enough time to fully charge this battery.
This was the case in our installation and it was not long (about 10 hours after installation) before the battery was discharged to the point where the Nest would not function.
To ensure that the battery does charge on a regular basis I ran a third wire from the thermostat to the furnace and connected this to the continuous low-voltage supply at the furnace thermostat wiring panel. This wire is referred to as a "C" wire and the "C" terminal on our furnace wiring panel was clearly marked with a "C" making it easy to complete this installation on my own. Having done this I have had no problems with the unit and it works exactly as promised in all of the literature.
The "self learning" function works great and the ability to activate and control the Nest from wherever I have an internet connection and my iPhone or iPad is outstanding.
We have been using the Nest for over one month now, during a particularly cold period, and can already see a difference in our overall power consumption. While this may be due to any number of other factors I feel that this product has contributed.

    I was skeptical

    • Written by from Holly Ridge

I recently purchased my first home and the first thing that I noticed was an incomprehensible programmable thermostat. The instructions were provided, but the thing requires an advanced degree of technical expertise in order to operate it... oh and it was beige and ugly. When I did use it, I would change the temperature manually but even then it would 'forget' after a day or two and return the temp to some hidden factory setting stored in its memory.

Being a gadget-geek, I was browsing the Apple store for one of my wife's christmas gifts (an iPad mini which she has yet to put down... the diamond tennis bracelet however is still in the box. I love my wife!) I noticed the nest and made an impulse buy mostly for the elegance of it's design and implied ease of use. Upon installation, I was not disappointed. I did my own installation. As other owners have mentioned, the Nest is MUCH smaller than a typical programmable thermostat. I for one broke out the plaster, sandpaper, and touch up paint... I like things that are simple and intuitive. You can use one of the enclosed backing panels, but it simply will not be as clean and streamlined.

I love the iPhone and iPad apps, which allow me to create a manual schedule - a constant 68 degrees. And when you set it at 68, that is where it stays. That doesn't sound like much, but it was a new experience for me... a much appreciated one.

The only issue I had was connecting it to my Airport Extreme. I maintained a hidden network, and Nest simply could not maintain a connection... after calling customer support (who are amazing) I decided to unhide my network and it worked without issue.

This thing is incredible. The future of affordable smart homes is here and make this your first step into it. The guy who created this helped to create the original iPod, so you know that this is top notch gear. 10 minutes to hook up, 5 minutes to set up online account.

Awesome product. My "do it yourself" skills are limited to changing light bulbs, but even I was able to install this thing on my own in under an hour. Coolest app enabled accessory I've purchased so far. Very easy to use and intuitive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

    Nest 2nd Gen Thermostat

    • Written by from Cary

I recently upgraded my upstairs and downstairs HVAC units. I also installed 2 Nest thermostats. The devices are truly amazing. Rather than adapt to some old paradigm of programming a device these devices adapt and learn from your habits and schedule. In a few days I could not imagine going back to a conventional programmable thermostat. Easy to install and get running. It may be more difficult for me to determine energy savings since I replaced my HVAC units. But having a device adapt to you rather than you adapt to it is great. Revolutionary just as the iPhone was. Highly recommended.

The Nest was my Christmas gift. It would have been easy to install if I wanted to leave it behind a door, but its too good looking to keep it hidden. The Nest work great, easy to adjust and program, and looks great. I really like that I can control the Nest remotely.

    Love/Hate

    • Written by from Levittown

I loved the idea of this thermostat so much, I bought two. The first hurdle was installation. I chose a professional installation through Nest, but after 3 failed attempts to schedule "local" installers on their list. I gave up. It seems that the contracted installers have a certain mileage limit they commit to as Nest Certified Installers, but won't actually travel more than 20 miles or cross State lines to do a job. At least that's the way it is where I live. Nest would schedule and the contractor would call me directly and tell me they couldn't do the job and I should call Nest to find another installer.

So, I lost two days of work dealing with that hot mess. Nest was kind enough to refund the install fee and my local Heating guy took the amount I was quoted by Nest. So, it was a Win/Win except for having to burn two days of vacation. The install was a breeze for the Heating Company tech. He had one in his home and one in his vacation home. He had nothing but good things to say.

The last six weeks have been great. I've been watching energy savings rack up on the iOS App by setting my heat to a 50 dgree low while away 5 days per week. In fact a friend just asked me today how I liked the T-stat. I raved about it and he plans to buy one tomorrow. Then I got home.

The entire upstairs was cold, it's 18 degrees outside and snowing on a Friday night. My upstairs Nest was showing an error E30. One of the wires was not giving power. If there is one thing I have learned in my 40+ years, it's that the wire itself is hardly ever the problem. The problem is usually at the origin or the termination point. So, I fired up tech support on the Nest site, got a case number and called the tech support line. Two hours later, many wire swaps, power cycles, trips to the fuse box and transfers of support personell. I was left with a choice between shorting the wires so that my Oil Burner runs continuosly costing ooodles of cash or sleeping on the couch and hoping the upstairs pipes don't freeze. The Nest tech thinks it's the Tstat base. It's Friday, my new Nest arrives on Tuesday. Really? This product may not be ready for prime time.
