Not horrible, but needs better execution

    • Written by from Victoria

I've been using Mobee's Magic Numpad for over a month now - and my overall impression is... it's ok. Like any product, there's good and bad with it, so I thought I'd outline exactly what I've found so far:

    The good:
    - comes with three different overlays (choice is always nice)
    - quick, easy access on/off button (allows use of trackpad as normal)
    - offers numberpad to my wireless keyboard (just like wired one has)
    - instant calculator button (I use this a lot)

    The bad:
    - expensive, especially for what it is (vinyl and small app)
    - doesn't "exactly" match the wireless keyboard aesthetics

    The ugly:
    - doesn't always pick up my taps (about 90% accurate though)
    - hard to read (if you have to look at the keys, which you probably do)

To improve this product, Mobee needs to make it cheaper ($19.99 with free shipping would be a much more palatable price point)... Mobee, you aren't Apple. Also, make the number keys a more solid/opaque white, put a thin black line around them and black numbers on top. This will make it MUCH easier to read and perfectly match the wireless keyboard. Depending on your lighting conditions, the current translucent white/clear keys can be almost impossible to read. Plus, because these aren't real physical keys, you always "have" to look at them while typing - so maximum visibility is a must!

As for it's accuracy - this is occasionally frustrating. It's way too easy to mistakenly hit numbers, or tap too lightly. Which makes for a lot of unnecessary correcting. Like I say, I'm probably about 90% accurate - vs 98% on a physical keypad (to be fair, I'll probably get a bit better over time). But still, the software could use some improvement.

Overall, I have found it handy on more than one occasion (doing my taxes for example). But there are still a few too many glitches to make this a standout product. I applaude Mobee for trying to make really nice Apple-like accessories... and the Magic Numpad is a good idea - it just needs better execution.

    Does not work

    • Written by from SHORELINE

It does not work. As simple as that. I have to enter and exit numpad mode using the Apple keyboard, and when I'm in numpad mode none of the "keys" work. Their support site is rife with similar complaints. So basically all this functions as is a way to disable my magic trackpad. I'll be calling Apple in the morning to return it. Don't waste your money.

You can NOT "count" on it...

The taps, the misses, the duplication ... you can't rely on the accuracy at all.

    ahh the F6

    • Written by from Beaconsfield

i aslo found clicking on the screen somewhere to activate the keypad was a bad mistake.. but then i went to the website.. and there it was documented...
    F6 will activate the keypad....
so far everything is working fine... oh.. their default 'delete' deletes the number in front of the cursor.. bizarre.. but it can be re-programmed.
i hope i dont have to re-install my os like the other guy...

Need to switch on tap to click

    • Written by from GLASGOW

I just received this and was initially quite disappointed as it seemed too insensitive, I couldn't reliably click on the number pad and get the desired response and felt that I really had to hammer the track pad to get it to work properly. I just went in to track pad preferences and set it to 'tap to click' and it now works beautifully.

Works as described; they must be doing something wrong.

    • Written by from Bellevue

The numpad works exactly as described.

I think that perhaps people who are having trouble with it, either didn't expect it to feel like the trackpad (it does NOT feel like the keyboard), or they didn't make the change in the trackpad control panel that the software said to make. Or perhaps they are touching the trackpad instead of clicking it.

In any case, it works exactly as described.

    Nitpicks:
    1. The sticker is hard to read under some lighting conditions. it would be nice if the symbols were black on white, instead of transparent on white.
    2. Many people might not like the tactile feedback- you must click (not tap) the trackpad with your finger on the key. But the feel is the trackpad feel. It might be nice if this were implemented as a membrane or chiclet keyboard on top of the trackpad.

    Very disappointed

    • Written by from BOZEMAN

A great idea if it worked. I have to tap so hard to input the numbers that over time I'm sure I would have repetitive stress injuries to my hand. Plus it doesn't work at all on lots of applications.

Happy with it, but there are pluses and minuses.

    • Written by from Sherman Oaks

Bought Magic Trackpad to use Numpad. Entering numbers subjectively easy and responsive once your fingers are located, but of course can't find position over keys by feel like you can with physical 10-key and must look down. Using Mobee's funky software for 10-key only, relying on BetterTouchTool (magnficent!) to toggle between numpad/trackpad modes (upper left click). Mobee's tech support writes back after a full week:( and only then tells you documented feature is missing in current version. :(

Replaced LMP-Adapter (which I recommend) with this set-up because of PITA Mac Pro Bluetooth issues causing keypad to disconnect. LMP-Adapter has advantage of physical keys, but I really love the Magic Trackpad + Magic Mouse + BetterTouchTool combination.

Recommend buying at Apple Store because of 14-day return policy if you're not happy. I am.

    Numpad Does Not Work

    • Written by from LANCASTER

I installed the software and was very disappointed to find that when I can get the the on/off function to work, I always get multiple entries for each touch of a number. I entered a ticket to Mobee for assistance. I then went to the Mobee forum and found a number of other users that have had the same problem and none have a solution. I then checked the Apple review site and found more of the same issues. These negative reviews are all recent and after I researched the product and requested as a gift.

I am very surprised that Apple offers this product in their store.

    You'll loose your money

    • Written by from Bruxelles

    Useless !
To activate the numpad, you have to click on a button on the screen (desactivate is easier because it directly available on the numpad).
And when the numpad is activated, you can't use your mouse anymore (or with limited space).
So, either you use your pad, either your numpad ...

    Very disapointed

Works great for me. Try my suggestion below

    • Written by from Riverside

I find it easier to leave the app in numpad mode all the time. This will still allow you to enter numbers in programs and the calculator and you can still use the trackpad like a mouse without switching to trackpad mode. Try it out because switching between the two modes using the trackpad doesn't always work.

    Works like a charm.

    • Written by from Nærum

This product works like a charm, I've had 0 problems with it. The film is easy to apply, and the software just works.

It's even super easy to remove the film and put on another one.

How someone manage to crash his computer to the point that he needed to reinstall everything, is beyond me. (My guess, he's a troll.)

So for anyone who wants the functionality of the numpad, but doesn't want to add another object to his desktop, then this is a must have.

    Nice idea. Poor execution

    • Written by from Houston

I really liked the idea of being abe to use the trackpad as a number pad as well. Unfortunately the only way to turn it on is to use a pull down menu command. I understand the software used to allow you to use a corner of the trackpad or a function key to toggle the numpad on and off, but this functionality has been removed. The lack of an easy toggle for the numpad makes it nearly unusable. I would not recommend anyone get this product.

    Temperamental

    • Written by from Palm Springs

This seemed like a really good idea however there are still bugs to work out. Maybe after a few years they will have figured it out. I could not get the numpad mode to turn on or sometimes it would turn on when I didn't want to.
AND now I cannot delete the program so once in awhile it will go into numpad mode.
    Not happy at all.

I can switch from trackpad mode to numpad mode easily and I didn't have any problem to install it.
