Does Time machine serve as a modem for PC?
Wondering if this will replace our existing comcast modem that works as in line for our old pc desk top and wirelessly for for our roku device and other visiting PC users laptops.

No, the airport extreme can replace a router if you have one, but it can not replace the comcast cable modem - it doesn't have the necessary hardware to connect the cable line. This would be a great addition to your network though. You would plug your cable modem in to the airport extreme, and the airport extreme would share that connection to your desktop via a wired (or wireless) connection, as well as to your roku and visiters via the wifi.

The description explicitly state Leopard and Snow Leopard compability. Is Lion not supported?

Can the time capsule play any movie file (EX: AVI,MP4)?
I have hundreds of movies on my PC (Free Movies), and I'm thinking of getting a iPad for my upcoming deployment. I'm concerned that I will not be able to stream my movies from the Time Capsule to the iPad because i didn't buy them on iTunes. Can I play all of my movies on the iPad via the Time Capsule? Thanks!

Can I access the Time Capsule from multiple Mac Books at the same time?
I currently have 4 MacBook Pros and need to be able to share files locally in our office, outside of our company network.

In a word — yes. Time Capsule can support multiple machines, but if two or more are attempting a backup at the same time, each backup will take a bit longer than it would if it were the only one backing up. However, I have multiple computers backing up to a single Time Capsule and there is enough randomness it when the Time Machine backups occur, it is rare that any two machines are backing up at the same time.

You can open the preference pane for Time Machine in System Preferences, and there it will show you if the back-ups have been running correctly or not. Also, if you have the Time Machine icon enabled (would be located at the upper right), then it will also show the info there.

No, Apple doesn't have such a product.
A Time Capsule (or any of the other Apple wireless access points like Airport and Airport Extreme) can act as a router. It can do many things like internet sharing, IPv6 routing, DHCP server, guest wireless network, print serving, etc.
A Time Capsule doesn't act like a modem simply because there are so many modem technologies around like DSL modem, cable modem, satellite modem, fibre modem, etc., and each broadband vendor uses its own settings for such a modem. Building such a "one size fits all" product would be close to impossible, and at least extremely expensive.
I would recommend to use the modem your broadband vendor supplies, and use the Time Capsule as your wireless access point -and- one click backup solution for your iMac.- Answered by J A K M

Is Internet sharing on Mac through a time capsule Via a USB 3G modem connected to the mac possible to create a wifi network

In principle, Internet sharing of Mac OS X can share any type of Internet connection, including iPhone USB, which is similar to the configuration you describe. And the communication channel to share this internet connection can be any of the other available: Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.
However, the way Internet sharing works, MAC OS X will try to create a private network between the server (sharing the internet connection) and the clients. Therefore if you chose to share your internet connection through WiFi, Mac OS X will create a private wireless network accepting connections from clients. This setup complicates the connection through a Time Capsule or makes it worthless. If you chose to share it over Ethernet, then your computer will become a server with its own IP address and will attempt to assign IP addresses to any computer connected to the same LAN, once again Time Capsule role in this scenario would be rather strange as it should act as a dumb switch and I almost sure you would require both computers connected to ethernet ports, making useless the best features of the Time Capsule.
A third and last option I can imagine is to connect your mac with internet connection to the Internet Ethernet Port of the Time Capsule; on the mac, share internet connection through the same port and then ask Time Capsule to create a wireless network sharing the internet connection where your second mac (or as many as you want) would connect. This however will require testing and is not the way it was intended to work, in addition you'll have your mac "server" tied to a range of 3 to 5m around the time capsule.

In my case, the Apple instructions worked perfectly. I first installed the Time Machine and created the home network, with all of my computers recognizing it--no problem for me at all. Then I took my old Airport Extreme and followed its instructions for creating a relay bridge to extend my wireless signal from the Time Machine to all over the house. I would go back to the start, find the user manuals--online if you don't have them printed out--and start by setting up the Time Machine to receive an input from your cable or DSL modem, and to connect wirelessly with all your equipment--or you can use ethernet cable. After the network is working, then try to set up your Airport as a wireless relay bridge to extend the wireless area of good reception.

Can Time Capsule back up a PC running Windows Vista?
Both of our family's MacBooks AND my wife's PC are able to use Time Capsule wireless signal with no problems.
The Macs are effortlessly backed up by the Time Capsule using Time Machine.
But even after installing Airport Utility onto the PC using the DVD/CD that came with the Time Capsule, the PC's Airport Utility can't find my Time Capsule. Page 18 of my little Time Capsule Setup Guide shows the PC being able to do this, so maybe something is wrong.
Is it possible for Time Capsule to automatically back up ALL our computers, both Mac and PC?

SyncToy - a free download will allow you to do this (I'm doing it in Win 7 but assume it works with Vista), but not as elegantly as time machine. You essentially set up 2 folders to sync and it keeps files there. On Windows 7 you can then set up a script - as described in the Help File for SyncToy - that automatically launches and does the sync once a week (or whenever you want it to).

So can this replace my wireless modem to allow my Internet and printers to be used on a wireless home network? I'm on a 24" iMac.

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.
If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly.- Answered by Randal S from Alameda

The cable modem has a standard ethernet connection and will therefore connect straight in to the Time Capsule. It will then share the connection with the internal network. You shouldnt need anything else.

Apple says the newest Time Capsule released 10/09 works better. Were any changes made to it to improve reliability?

Hi,
In short, yes. The only reliability issues in the history of the product was PSU failures after 18 months, resulting in dead units. Apple has taken care of that with an internal redesign. Essentially if you have AppleCare on any Mac it will be covered under that warranty - and any Apple Store would be happy to help should you have any issues (which I have never had).- Answered by Justin D from Londonderry

Yes, you can backup multiple Mac's to one TImeCapsule, drive space is the only limitation to how many Mac's you can backup on a TImeCapsule (as far as i'm aware). I've 3 x TimeMachines on one TImeCapsule at the moment.
PS Make certain you archive your TImeCapsule backups from the TimeMachine (when it becomes full) to an external drive.- Answered by Jules J from Paddington
