Do I need a fast internet connection if I plan to use AirPort Express only to stream music from my iOS device to AirPort Express-connected speakers?
What I'm trying to set up is this: I have a primary router in one room, and then I'll have AirPort Express in another room. The AirPort Express will have speakers attached to it. I also plan to move AirPort Express around the house for the times I want to take music to another room. My iOS devices and my AirPort Express will always be in the same room.
My concern is: if I stream music from my iOS device to my AirPort Express speakers, will the music have to be streamed first to my primary router in the other room before being relayed back to AirPort Express? Or will my iOS device have a direct connection? The reason I'm wondering this is that I've noticed that with iTunes wifi sync, I'm actually required to be online, even if my Mac and iOS device are in the same room. I believe that's the same for the iOS remote app as well. So it seems that I have to go through the cloud first anytime my iOS and Mac communicate wirelessly with each other. My concern now is, is that going to be required for streaming music to the AirPort Express that is just a few feet away from me? Because I hope not. I have thick walls in my house and my AirPort Express will probably at times be far from the main router. Additionally, I only have a 1 mbps connection (there are no faster connections in my area). So if I have to go through the cloud first before being able to stream music, there could be significant skipping.- Asked by Wes N from Rosemead

No because AirPlay does not use your Internet connection, it's all connected through the airport express.

I am sitting in my hotel room in São Paulo, Brazil as I write this, using the Express Base Station to share my ethernet connection with my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad. A colleague two floors above knew I had checked in to the hotel because he saw my network on his wireless list (secured, of course).
I had previously used the original Airport Express to do the same and thought the new one would be too big to travel with (additional power cable and all), but that has not been the case and this is its 3rd trip to Brazil.- Answered by Steven P from Salt Lake City

Best Answer
Yes but there is a delay with the sound. It's just as you are using AirPlay with just audio output rather than both av.

Yes, you can ! I did this to resolve an issue over the Wi-Fi for the hole house and it works fine in every room! Just follow the setup instructions to make the First Airport Express to be a "bridge" to the Second Airport express. But keep in mind that each bridge you make will loose some speed.

I don't know about Q1000 but I have an ASUS Wireless Router RT-N56U (dual band) and the Airport Express will ever so often drop the wireless connection to the ASUS AP. I have to power off the Airport when that happens to recover...
I figured Apple designed it to work flawlessly with only their Airports.- Answered by Ronald Y

Is this device capable of sharing a typical hotel WiFi connection?
Problem: Some hotels have expensive WiFi only internet access that is tied to a single device. I'd like to share this connection amongst my devices (MacBook, iPhone, iPad, etc). Some hotels only offer fee-based WiFi and are bound to a single device. Can this device extend a WiFi only network like those found in some hotels?
- Asked by Michael S from Newport News

Best Answer
Usually not - as the hotels want each device to be connected/authorized. Instead, I connect my MAC via WIFI to the hotel, then share the wifi connection over the MAC's ethernet port, that is then connected to the Airport Express, which is configured to create its own network. This way all my other devices use the Airport Express and they all share the MAC's wifi connection.

Yes it supports IPv6. In its tech specs apple states that the Airport Express is compatible with "NAT, DHCP, PPPoE, VPN Passthrough (IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP), DNS Proxy, SNMP, IPv6 (6to4 and manual tunnels)."
