When you rent a movie you have 48 hours to watch it, from the time you begin to watch it. You can watch it repeatedly in that 48 hour period. It is streamed over the Internet.

When you buy a movie, you can download it to a computer in your home via iTunes and store it there, or store it in iCloud, and watch it as many times as you wish. If you download to a computer in your house, you will need to have that computer turned on and "Homesharing" on to stream it from your computer to the Apple TV, if you store it in iCloud, it is streamed over the Internet, if you watch it more than once this could eat up a good chunk of your monthly allotment with your ISP.

Unfortunately Sky Go does not support Air Play. It will send to sound but you will just get a static image on the screen informing you the device does no t support HDMI output.

The same is true for the Sky Sports/News apps!

Sure you can and with the right system it works brilliantly. I have the digital optical output of Apple TV connected into my Marantz NA7004 Network Streamer which I then use as a DAC feeding my Marantz Pearl Lite stereo amplifier. This gives me absolutely the best sound. I can then stream my music via Airplay from iTunes on my PCs and Macs, iphones and ipads as I choose. Even better I use iTunes Match service which works brilliantly across all devices provided you have a decent Internet connection and a good wifi router to avoid dropout and other hiccups.

Yes this should be possible. As long as your hard drive when connected via USB can be accessed from you computer then there is no issues, all you do is have your iTunes library on the hard drive then locate it when you open iTunes on your computer. Once iTunes is running the Apple TV will stream from that library on that hard drive.
I have used this method and a NAS drive connected via ethernet to the router or switch and simply switch between multiple libraries on either drive.

Yes, there are a number of options. On a home network one can watch films that are stored in one's iTunes library. Also films can be rented from the iTunes Store for a modest sum. "Netflix", which is a separate subscription service provides a wide selection of TV and films that can be viewed on Apple TV as well as other Internet devices.
