Will a normal Radeon HD 5870 work or only this specific one?

I've already got a 58xx card that I use in Boot Camp/Windows - does this mean that there will be drivers so that it'll work under OSX or does it require some special hardware/firmware that only these cards have?

  • A HD5870 designed and manufactured for Windows based computers can be flashed to contain Mac OS X EFI instructions on it's BIOS ROM, this is only possible if the card is compatible with the custom made ROM. This is a very technical procedure but if carried out correctly with the right equipment and card it can be successful. If you don't know what you are doing it could 'brick' the card and render it useless.

The newer Mac video cards have EFI as well as bios roms. EFI for OS X and bios for Boot Camp in Windows. The Windows only PC cards are bios only. Apple would need to issue firmware to flash these PC cards in order to work on OS X and that is highly unlikely seeing as they have not done so with previous Radeon's.

  • No, windows versions of the 5870 don't have EFI64 firmware needed to support MacOS X booting.
