The two straps that lock the front flap, do they connect to the back of the bag so that the straps can cinch the bottom of the bag?

    No, they don't. The straps are sewn on at the bottom of the front panel. They can allow the bag to be over-stuffed a little, but don't cinch the bottom of the bag in any way.
