Is use of a screen protector for the iPhone 4 recommended by Apple? How likely is the screen to scratch without one?

The guys down at the Apple Store recommended it for the assurance of no scratches. I don't think this website recommends it. (Could be wrong).
The glass is highly scratch resistive, but they are possible. I've scratched mine twice, but they are only noticeable when pointed out. (I should call them retina-scratches :o). I'm guessing they were caused when I carelessly toss my phone into my coat-zipper-pocket, and the metal zipper rips at the glass.
Just be EXTRA careful when using it, and you should be fine. I still recommend this screen protector though ;P

I am not sure if there is an 'official' statement by Apple on it but certainly it is highly recommended to have a screen protector. Though some would say that we would only use the phone for at most 2yrs before replacing it with a newer model, what harm will a few scratches do? Well unless you are ok with that, then go without a screen protector. But suffice to say, an added protection is always a plus, considering that I have many a times knocked my phone on a surface or dropped it onto the floor. So fat the protectors have served me well, protecting the screen from those unsightly scratches! :)

Well, I would say that having a screen protector on every devices is a good thing, it's not recommended but accidents do happen, so it's better safe than sorry.
