Can you plug the USB 3.0 cable for the Belkin USB 3.0 3-Port Hub into a USB 2.0 port on the Macbook Pro?

I am looking for a USB Hub to use with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I would like to purchase from Apple as I respect their quality of merchandise sold and I want to get it right the first time.

  • Yes, you can plug the USB 3 cable from the Hub into the USB 2 port on your MBP. The device will only allow USB 2 speeds, even if you plugin a USB 3 device. Does it make sense to spend more money on a USB 3 Hub vs USB 2 Hub if you'll be limited to USB 2 speeds on your current Macbook? Maybe... Once you upgrade your Macbook and peripherals down the road, the USB 3 hub may be useful to you to gain high speed data rates between your Macbook and peripherals.

It wouldn't make a difference if your main USB port is 2.0. Simply electrical, if you ran a 9 volt battery on a source that can absorb up to 12 volt of power. You will still end up with 9 volt power. I hope that make sense...
