Size and compatibility. The 85w is larger/heavier than the 45w. The 85w will adapt to be used with a lower power computer (ie. the MacBook Air), but it was intended for use with the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

  • The 45W is meant for the MacBook Air and the 85W is for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The built-in 95-watt-hour battery in the Pro and the 50 in the Air each have different chargers.
