what is the best way to extend the life of the adaptor? does keeping it plugged in electricity harm the adaptor??

To extend the life of adapter don't use it :). Seriously, you can keep it plugged without harm. Periodically clean the magsafe plug.

The best way to care for one doesn't involve unplugging it when not in use. The main thing is securely disconnecting it from your MacBook I.e. not just yanking it at an angle and putting strain on the cable.
