Overview

Wireless backup for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Time Machine icon

NEW
Automatic backup with Time Machine.

Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location. New technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard up to 60 percent faster than before.2

Storage icon

Server-grade storage.

The massive 1TB or 2TB server-grade hard drive2 gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Mac computers.

Networking icon

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos, and more — without wires.4

Dual Band icon

NEW
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 percent better range than with the previous-generation Time Capsule.5

Guest Networking icon

Guest networking.

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers, and attached hard drives.

Drive Sharing icon

Wireless drive sharing.

Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.6

Printer icon

Print without wires.

Print documents, photos, and more from any room in your home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB. (See system requirements.)

Security icon

Strong security and access controls.

Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.

    Risky Investment

Written by GL from San Diego

I paid $300 for a .5 TB Time Capsule 18 months ago and it died suddenly on November 4, 2009. It appears that the electronics or power supply overheated and failed: the unit will not power up but the hard disk extracted from the corpse is intact with all the data.

It is unclear whether there has been any significant design change in the current Time Capsules. If the current product has the same defect then it is likely to quit working in about 18 months - right after the warranty expires. You are taking a big gamble buying a Time Capsule. Avoid this product -- instead get a Airport Extreme or other brand of router/wireless access point and an external hard drive or NAT for backup.

I love my MacBook Pro but this product was a poor value.

    Saved my Life

    Written by ZK from Athens

    Nov 14, 2009

I got the first generation 500GB Time Capsule on summer 2008. Though, I started using it as a Time Machine based backup since October 2008 when I replaced my old PowerBook and got the 15" MacBookPro with Leopard.
It is true that I notice the Time Capsule getting really hot and I have been worried about this. Also, the back ups take too long.
A couple of weeks ago, my HD, on my (just one year old) MBP, died (but that's a different story) and I got depressed at the time, fearing I had lost, besides photos and videos, all my invaluable PhD data.
I have to admit, I never believed TC (and TM) could work so fine.
After getting a new WD HD and replacing it myself (my warranty had just expired), I just pressed the restore button. 20hrs later (quite slow I have to say again) my system was as on 5th Nov 2009. I am really happy, and honestly, the HD failure on a 2500 dollars Mac, I have almost forgotten.
Speed could be improved but as they say it did in the last generation.
The bottom line is that Time Machine is the great product of course, it would be enough for me to have saved all my data. Time Capsule is just the accessory, but the ease of the wireless function (especially in everyday back ups for Laptops), together with the router capabilities, make it a far better solution than a regular 3rd party external Hard Disk.

    Serious heat problems

    Written by KK from Benediktbeuern

    Nov 15, 2009

The device turns very hot even without actual backup activity. It has a built-in fan, but this is completely sealed by neighboring parts so it's hard to imagine there will be any airflow. Terrible internal design, sorry. More

    Good Product

As a MAC user you get used to plug and play. This is one of the few products that you have to tinker around a bit; because, the instructions are very vague. I considered returning it, however, I tried a few different things, and I finally got it to work.

Its not a blazing fast router like you think it would be. If you want to utilize the speeds it can, your looking at another $20+ a month from your ISP (if they even offer speeds like that).

The main reason I got it, was for the wireless external hard drive, and that aspect get's a 5/5.

All in all, its an apple product, so the money your paying is for a top notch product. Only reason I have a 4/5 was due to the set up ( I felt like a PC user at times - poor guys) but after setup, its 5/5/

    Very Slow Back-Up!!!

Written by FF from San Francisco

    Nov 29, 2009

I'm two days into a 5GB Back-Up via ethernet of my 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro to my 2TB Time Capsule... This product is so slow that it is virtually impossible to finish a backup before you have to disconnect from the network and move on. I'd really recommend not buying this product and finding another solution. More

    Excellent integration

    Written by BF from Vancouver

I do IT administration for much of my day, so I really appreciate not having to do more of the same at home. My Time Capsule does an excellent job of anchoring my home network, providing wireless access, NAT/firewall, printing, and backup all with minimal setup and no ongoing effort. Maybe it seems expensive to some people, but I find it to be an outstanding value.

    Some notes:

My home machines are all Macs, so I don't know if Windows access is anything near as seamless.

I have a Wii, and having a separate B/G radio in the Time Capsule is great; my Wii can access the network without dragging down my other computers. The same would apply to iPhones and other portable B/G devices.

Many wireless N routers only operate in the B/G band, not in the separate A band. The B/G band is very busy (to the point of occasionally being unusable) in my apartment, but I've never had connectivity problems in the 4 months I've had a Time Capsule, presumably because of its A band capability.

Yes, it runs hot and it isn't absolutely silent. Ensure you have some space for cooling, and don't put it too close to the head of your bed. I wouldn't want it in my bedroom, but I can't hear it at all in my media centre from my couch.

If you are using the Time Capsule with a computer that's covered under AppleCare, the Time Capsule is covered. Note that they do NOT have to be on the same receipt. From the AppleCare Protection Plan terms & conditions:

"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."

Also, from Apple's page advertising the plan:

"An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan"

Note that I (and others) have verified this in practice - I am getting my dead 18-month old Time Capsule replaced under the APP on my MacBook pro.

The new 1TB and 2TB Time Capsules might have a different brand of hard drive or if not, they might have a better more reliable hard drive. The new Time Capsules were released April of 2009; so no one can say that" My 2TB Time Capsule died after 18 months!" I do not know if Apple has changed the hard drive or not; I would think they would try to do something about the two star rating for this product! More

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.

If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly.
