Don't worry the bass isn't a loser at all...you can download the Harman Kardon App to adjust the bass as you wish and everything will be up to you to play. With the only speakers that I know now that carries both Bluetooth and AirPlay in the same device, I personally think this is the speaker to go for...no matter where you place it, the sound is perfect wherever it is placed...love it so much that I'm planning on buying extra ones around the house so that I can link it all up together!

Priced at a reasonable $400, it is neither horrendously overpriced nor what would be considered cheap. Its size is about the same as the box for a small~medium coffee-making machine. However, don't let its small footprint fool you. Its size belies the sound it produces, easily filling my 20x12 foot bedroom with beautiful crisp omnidirectional sound. With treble that does not roll off too much at highest frequencies, smooth natural mids, and punchy but not boomy bass, the Aura is a solid performer at any price point. At high levels there is no distortion, although I hesitate to really dial up the volume past ~60-70% since the sound becomes unnecessarily loud and unhealthy for your ears. It has a easily tunable bass boost with the HK Remote app from the App Store as well as small-step volume control. Connectivity features include Bluetooth apt-x and Airplay as well as DLNA and a 3.5mm auxiliary input to connect your Macbook's headphone out. Listening at low volumes is equally fun as at high levels, as the sound is crystal clear and not muffled even at 20% or less. Once set up, the Airplay connection is quite good and I have yet to experience any audio lag or dropouts. The Bluetooth input is equally good. Lastly, I would like to mention the design. It is reminiscent of the HK iSub from the iconic HK Soundsticks, though obviously the build quality is a step up. It has a premium cloth-covered grill, glass cover and sound tube and LED lighting to indicate operational/volume status. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Aura to anyone in the market for an Airplay speaker that is both well designed and capable of reproducing great sound.

The mid and treble ranges are well-defined and the bass range is crisp and clear, even, surprisingly, at low volumes. Musical styles from classical to singer/songwriter to Nine Inch Nails all sound great, especially for such a small system.

Streaming music from iTunes to the Aura plus an Airport Express is seamless, with no noticeable delay between the receiver (hooked up to the Airport) in one room and the Aura in another.

  • The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

It isn't going to compete with a full blown surround system, but I was looking for a source of music in the living room. It does have an optical input, which at least from my TV would allow it to be the sound system if you live in a smaller house/apt and don't have a more robust system. It really sounds great.
The bad is it doesn't have a remote, and since mine is on the floor under a piece of furniture it means turning it off and on requires crawling on my hands and knees and holding this tiny little "button". No remote on/off is pretty horrible. The instructions are almost non-existent, so you really don't know if you could be using it better or not.
The ugly is it looks like a popcorn machine. My home is mid-century modern and this is straight up modern. I planned to have it hidden behind a piece of furniture to have sound out of nowhere. However putting it directly on carpet totally muffles the sound, so now I need to find a 8.5" round piece of marble or something to put it on. So right now this review is putting it on hardwood and it sounds terrific there, but looks totally out of place in the room.

I have no idea why there are not more dual airplay/blue tooth speakers, but it is what it is. I would rather have a traditional speaker look, but I could only find one and it was twice the price and also I am not sure it would cover the bass nearly as well as the Aura. If you like the look, can put it somewhere easy to access physically then it is a nice system.

It sounds warmer and punches the bass sounds deeper and better than my previous sytem 'Marshall Woburn', which i've returned because of it's overall harsh sound characteristics.

I guess, the surroundly placed six midrange & tweeters gives you a nice dimention of sound, which really helps to fill the whole room easily. (tested in a 45 square/meters room)
Altough i placed it on floor near a wall, the sound was ritch and equally filling the room. It was definetely a better and different experience than my previous speaker, which sounded like a mono speaker.

The HK app gives you a chance to tune bass level, as a bonus option.. I wish i could also adjust trebble, altough using the eq of your player really helps out there.

Overall, The Aura is a very nice looking unique design, when comparing to most other options.
It sounds fantastic, and highly recommended to anyone!

Skeptical after reading all the reviews, regarding the flashing wi-light, and connection issues, I decided to take the plunge. Let me tell you, I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER! This is a fantastic speaker, providing 360-degree sound at a level that surpassed my expectations. The app is great, and very simple to use; like Apple products, the Aura doesn't come with a manual, but is very intuitive to set up. I was able to sync the speaker to my wi-fi network in moments, and the quality is excellent. The flashing light that people reviewed as being annoying is unnoticeable to me, as it sits on the back of the speaker, near the cable ports (and I don't keep the speaker on a pedestal in the middle of the living room). The app is a little finicky, and may have to be 'closed' and re-opened, but it takes a mere second or two for the speaker to show up again; also, the ability to adjust the volume and bass levels from the app is nice.

Don't be deterred by any of the negative comments; I was more than surprised to find out the quality, appearance and sound output of this speaker greatly exceeded my expectations, and totally negated my fears of owning this incredible piece of technology.
