    Universal connectivity

With both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports, the LaCie Rugged hard drive is a perfect match for your Mac or PC. And because USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, you can connect it to any standard computer. The LaCie Rugged is also fully bus-powered through the included USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cables. Its portability and interfaces make it the must-have partner for your new Mac.

    No-compromise speed

Get lightning-fast transfer speeds on Mac and PC thanks to the USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. The HDD version gives you up to 110MB/s, a 35% improvement over FireWire 800. Back up and transfer mountains of data in a fraction of the time. Enjoy noticeably more responsive photo library browsing.

    All-points data protection

The LaCie Rugged is MIL-compliant for superior data protection from accidental drops up to 1.2 meters (4 feet). Whether it falls off your desk or out of the pocket of your safari jacket, you can be confident that your data is still accessible. The LaCie Rugged is tough enough to be shipped for reliable delivery to clients or partners. Included software even protects your files from prying eyes with AES 256-bit encryption.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

I haven't noticed any of pro I picked up one of these at my local Apple Store the other day, and it has been working like a dream. I haven't noticed any of problems other users seem to have had. Obviously it doesn't stay ice-cold when you've got it plugged in and working full-tilt. Likewise, it won't perform as fast as say, the SSD versions on Thunderbolt, but comparing it to USB and FW800 drives I also use, this sucker is wicked fast!

The drive hasn't hardly ever turned off itself when Mac's going to sleep. The light is still on, and sometimes the drive's running and is very hot.
Bought it in Apple store, and trusted there would not be any unreliable stuff.
If/when I get a replacement it could be the new model with extremely short cable which is practically impossible to use with iMac. Smiley: disappointed.
Oh my, Apple(!) How could I give any star at all? Must 1 be given so it got now one.

hooked up the drive using the thunderbolt port and installed their software. a big mistake. first thing i noticed is how slow the hooked up the drive using the thunderbolt port and installed their software. a big mistake. first thing i noticed is how slow the backup was! 5 hours to back up 40+G of data! the next thing i noticed was how hot the cable and drive was getting....really the drive got so hot it was almost untouchable! i was going to return the drive when i gave it another try using time machine. wow! what a difference. the backup was really fast and everything ran nice and cool. i'm not going to return the drive as of now. their software looks great but it did'nt work for me. also i tried to register this drive several times for two days and every time is said that the server was down. you don't have to register anyway but keep your receipt. overall a good product.

I use it for backups and for working with videos. It's been doing a great job so far. I like that it is fast, rugged and doesn't need a separate power supply. I'd also like to mention that the 10 GB of cloud storage included with this drive is a pretty nice "extra," as it easily lets me share files with people remotely. And while the amount isn't huge compared to what the drive offers, it's still plenty big enough for lots of photos and video files.
