Overview

The perfect wireless solution for home, school, and small business.

Networking icon

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos, and more — without wires.1

Dual Band icon

UPDATED
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, AirPort Extreme works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.2 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 percent better range than with the previous-generation AirPort Extreme Base Station.3

Guest Networking icon

Guest networking.

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers, and attached hard drives.

Printer icon

Print without wires.

Have several computers in your home or office but only one printer? No problem. Just connect a compatible printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and the printer instantly becomes available to all the computers (Mac and PC) on your wireless or wired network. (See system requirements.)

Drive Sharing icon

Share your hard drive.

You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.4

Security icon

Strong security and access controls.

Rest easy — AirPort Extreme takes strong measures to prevent unauthorized intrusion into your wireless network. It offers a built-in firewall and supports industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP. Yet it’s still easy for authorized users to connect to the base station, thanks to its simple setup utility and powerful access controls.

    Great!

Just works since the day I took it out of the box. No reboots, no slow service. The device is transparent - exactly what you want from a wireless netwroking device. Delivers great reception throughout the house. I keep this in a enclosed bookshelf, on top of my DVR (not the best location), and it just plugs away. No overheating, no worries. Highly recommended. This is the best wireless router that I have found on the market and have used. I have never had to reset this
, never had any kick offs like with other routers. I have it in my basements, in my office. My wife works upstairs
. She has a mac book pro and I have the 24 IMac, waiting for my new 27 coming today. I have my work PC set up along with a wireless printer and a shared printer as well.

    GREAT ROUTER!

I have used this router for 8 months. Great replacement coming from linksys routers. Setup was a bit lengthy but after the setup the router hasn't been off since. Airport Extreme truly sets a precedent when coming to consumer routers. More

    great so far!

I have been having all kinds of problems with my netgear and linksys routers..in fact,i thought it might be a problem associated with my cable modem because i was experiencing the same drop outs and slowdowns with both routers...i decided to try the airport extreme and so far it has been rock solid and the speed has been outstanding...it has only been a few days but the change is dramatic and i am very impressed with it thus far...perhaps it has something to do with apple routers working better with apple laptops?who knows? Best router I've ever used!

Written by JM from Glenwood Springs

I work in IT and am CCNA certified. I work with routers all the time. I've used many routers including Linksys and Dlink and they all had their issues. I would get dropouts and poor performance. The Airport Extreme blows all these away. For one it was very easy to setup and now all my laptops at home connect. I have incredible download speeds and youtube loads very fast. I haven't had one dropout yet. This router looks hot and works great. Like every apple product, it works straight out of the box. If you are debating on whether or not to get this router. Just do it. It is well worth the money. You could get a cheaper router but you will get what you pay for. Just my opinion. More

    Horrible

Written by RM from Lake Oswego

    Dec 15, 2009

I am an Apple fan-boy, and my house is filled with Apple gadgets. I love all of them except for the Apple wireless devices. I have two airport extremes (one of the gigabit ones, and one of the new dual band versions) as well as 3 airport expresses and an apple TV on wireless. I'm not sure what is causing he problems, but the devices are constantly in need of reboots and Airtunes constantly skips during playback.

I had Linksys routers before, and they were much more robust. The Apple devices were easier to set up, and have much better range, but that is not very helpful when they are constantly cutting out!

Actually you are spot on. That is the whole purpose really of AirPort. As you say, plug in your ethernet cable and the AirPort Extreme Base Station, set it up and it becomes your wireless access point for your home, office or wherever you will be using it. It will allow any computer, Mac or PC to wirelessly connect to the internet provided, of course that you have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and it also has dual Band Wi-Fi so any Wi-Fi device will also use it to connect like an iPod Touch or iPhone.

You can also plug a USB printer into it so that any computer on your network can print wirelessly as well. You can even plug in a USB hard Drive into the base station for use as a network drive which can also be accessed over the web if you are away. If you own a PS3 or XBOX the base station will also allow you to connect those devices wirelessly to your network.

Technically no, but for certain customers, their environments may make it seem so. Wireless interference is one of the main causes for certain customers having a bad experience with the Airport products. Take note of how many other wireless networks are around and what devices are in the same area that utilize similar wireless technology. The Airport devices use same wireless technology and consist of the same hardware. With the Airport Extreme, you get the Dual-band feature and the extra ethernet ports.

    Hope this helps.
