The TomTom car kit works great for me. I like not having to connect a power adapter and audio jack before I put it into the holder. With the TomTom car kit it is easy to put in the iPhone and take out with one hand.
A lot of people on the internet have been complaining that the price is too high for a holder. In my opinion, this product is a convergence of many different products into one. A great holder, Bluetooth speaker phone, charger, car stereo audio adapter and enhanced GPS chip. I have done away with my Bluetooth speaker phone a different holder and audio adapter and the ease and convenience works well for me.
I have been using the Navigon Mobile Navigator and its accuracy has seemed to improve with the Car Kit's GPS chip. …More173 of 183 people found this useful

While I won't argue that this is a bit expensive for a holder ... it's much more than that. In addition to holding my iPhone at eye level, the GPS, built into the holder made my TomTom app coordinate in a matter of a couple seconds and stay on the correct road ... no more jumping over to parallel side streets. It's night and day the accuracy the Car Kit adds to the GPS that's built into the iPhone!! In addition, I can now do conference calls in my car without having to use my BT ear Piece. The ear Piece can get very uncomfortable and also runs out of power when I have back to back or long calls.
I did try another windshield mount in the past and the quality that the TomTom Car Kit has far surpasses the others. They felt cheap and were definitely not built to last like this one is!!
If your budget can handle it, I HIGHLY recommend the TomTom Car Kit!! …More74 of 78 people found this useful

I found that the unit rotates from the horizontal to vertical position when driving over bumps. Very annoying.

I received the TomTom car kit today. I had troubles with it not sticking to the windscreen. There is no docking plug so my ipod adaptor does not work. I can not get the handsfree kit to work. It also is unstable on the windscreen and wobbles. Not a good car kit. Can i get my money back? …More

I just received my Tom Tom Car Kit and am using it with my original Iphone. Now I don't need to buy a new phone! I am a pilot and one of my apps, Foreflight 3.0 also immediately fired up the GPS features for flying!!!
I was on the speakerphone for 40 minutes with a friend of mine and he said my voice was clear. I checked email, stocks, browsed the web while sitting in my driveway mind you, not driving.

No, you don't need the TomTom app to use the dock.
There is a line out jack that will allow you to use a cable to connect to your stereo or a tape adaptor.
