    Awful! Stay away!!!

    • Written by from Sacramento

Bought two of these a month a part from my local Best Buy. Both drives failed! One was a backup to the other so I am out the data now. Cost to recover data? $1,000.00. Terrible. Just terrible. Definitely a hard drive failure as it makes all kinds of noises trying to start up. Not reliable at all. Especially when a friend of mine had his fail a month ago. I should have known better.

Too noisy for a music server drive

    • Written by from Calgary

Purchased this as an external storage for MacMini music server but the drive is louder than the MacMini's own internal drive. During spin I could hear a light but noticeable high pitched "singing" as well as the drive spin. You probably wouldn't hear that in an office, but it is too loud for my application with music. I cannot comment on it otherwise.

    Hard Drive Failure

    • Written by from Los Altos

I was one of the very first to buy the original G-Tech 2TB hard drive, and had until recently been a happy owner of several G-Tech drives, thinking I'd finally found a reliable manufacturer. One of my G-Tech 2TB drives crashed. G-Tech does not repair drives, only replaces them, so I sent it to a third party for testing. Internally, the drive consists of two 1-TB drives configured in a RAID-0 (striped) configuration. There had been a hard failure of one of the drives. The disk head was actually scraping the drive surface. Since the default configuration is striped - part of a file gets written to one drive and part to the other - complications arise. Due to this complexity, the estimate to recover the data is $3,400 if the data can be recovered at all. I didn't mind paying a premium for G-Tech drives thinking NEC drives would be reliable, but experience has taught me otherwise. Does anyone make reliable drives any more?

    Good drive, minor issues

    • Written by from Sarnia

    Nice looking drive.
Extruded case design and thorough ventilation holes provide good cooling.

Only issues are minor and don't affect performance.

    1) Like all small fans, there is a slight sound but not terribly loud.
(Time will tell if the fan lasts longer than most small fans.)

    2) HD access light on front is white and bright. If you leave your drive on 24/7 in a bedroom, this could be an issue.

Speed + reliability = Great drive

    • Written by from Ottawa

I've been running this drive for a year in a music recording studio. It gets put through it's paces running live samples, virtual instruments and other demanding applications on a daily basis. It's hooked up to a Mac Pro with firewire. I've had none of the problems I've read about here. In fact, I've yet to have a single problem. I suggest people with problem drives send them back. I've bought well over a hundred hard drives over the last few years and I can say every company has occasional duds. It happens. But all good companies take bad drives back and replace them for free. This is a great little drive. You pay extra for it's good looks though.

    G-Tech Makes Great Stuff

    • Written by from Etobicoke

These drives are built to last. I use them as Workstation companion drives, Workgroup Server drives and Enterprise Backup drives. They are incredibly fast, reliable, cool and quiet. Would also recommend G-RAID for those that require a little more performance. We use these for overnight server snapshots and backups (about 3x 2TB drives/night) and they just work! We've daisy-chained 6 of these drives together and every night we swap out 3 of them for alternates and - cross our fingers - have not had any issues. We've been employing this plan and these drives for about 12 months now. Great product, in our opinion much better than anything LaCie has to offer.

A very reliable drive, and very fast.

I would have to agree that the light on the front of the drive is annoying, but I still rate this drive very highly based solely on performance alone. I do a lot of HD video editing in Final Cut Pro and am able to render far quicker than I have on ANY other external HD. I can transfer a GB of data in about a minute with the Firewire 800 connection plugged in to my iMac Quad Core i7. Operation has been seamless since day one.

    G -Drive 2TB unmounts

    • Written by from Huntsville

I purchased 2 of these Drives about two weeks ago- one to handle my lightroom backup (about 1.1 TB) and one for my newly created Aperture library (about the same size.)

I have been moving, copying files on and off all week and the G- Drives are unmounting themselves randomly - sometimes in the middle of large file transfers sometimes after several hours of no activity- at $300 a pop i think i wasted 600 bucks - probably should return them but at this point my backups are complete and my new caviar black 2TB (4 drives) are installed in my mac pro so I may just unplug them and shelve them

ps while they look great they are (IMHO)

    JUNK!!!!!

    Fantastic!

I've owned this drive for about 10 months now and it has performed flawlessly. My last WD failed on me within 5 months, so I went with the what was recommended at the Apple store and haven't looked back. Not to mention that the G-Tech design is VERY stylish. Would highly recommend and will definitely look to buy again in the future.

    best of the lot

    • Written by from Hillsboro

I've had several Lacie, Western Digital and G-Tech drives and a Drobo. Lacies power supplies always died and they are noisy, Western Digital very silent but the firewire has issue when waking up, Drobo's are just slow and loud. I have had both the raid and non-raid versions of g-tech and I definitely like this one the best. Raid version is just too loud. If Western Digital would every fix their FW issues, that would be my pick, but until then G-tech is my vote.

    Seems decent

    • Written by from Simi Valley

Wow what were they thinking with that light? Now if it has an on/off switch maybe it would be useful as energy efficient strobe lighting? I think it was designed for very well lit environments.

Anyway, on to the review. The drive appears well constructed and the connectors are sturdy (my seagate free agent USB 2 connector gave me a heart attack since it started to unmount unless the cord was tweaked 'just right' so I went looking for a replacement quick and found this drive). The drive performs well under FireWire 800; for large files I get sustained write performance of 60-65mb/s over several hours which is about double what I got out of the USB attached disk.. Random access stuff is fast and noisy which is to be expected from a high performance disk. I have my final cut render files running off it now and that seems to be working well.

I do not like the power cord- one of those irritating ones that has the transformer integral to the plug which is great if you are the one person left that plugs things into the wall instead of a power strip. But the drive gains points for having an on/off switch. Not sure why I like them but I do.

Too soon to tell about reliability but IBM drives are as good (or bad) as any other so hopefully this drive gives many years of good service.

Integrates well with MacPro buying one more!!

    • Written by from Sedona

I put in an eSATA board to use with the 2T G-drive. It is as fast as my internal HDs. The look and quality is worth the money. I have had the drive for a year and have had no problems. I plan on getting a separate drive just for the Time Capsule backup. I installed a 2T internal drive 6 months ago for TC back up and it has already failed. I went through a well regarded Mac Authorized dealer for that internal drive.

No issues - though the light can be annoying - you can tape it or place the drive out of sight....and when it is working you know it.

    No longevity

    • Written by from Eugene

I bought this hard drive a year and a half ago and it started having problems. This was frustrating as it is my primary back up for my family photos. I will not be buying another one with this poor record of longevity.

Take Negative Reviews with a Grain of Salt!!!

    • Written by from Atlanta

I've purchased now 3 of these hard drives since early 2008. Initially, I was drawn to them from the 4.5/5 given to these drives by Macworld and was put at ease given Hitachi's reputation.
I did have a problem akin to those discussed here with my first drive, but the problem was promptly diagnosed, fixed, and the drive was quickly returned to me. The problem was with the control board in the back and NOT the drive itself. The drive itself is as reliable and speedy as any external drive I've used, and I've definitely put all 3 through their paces, all daisy chained without any appreciable loss in speed.

Some of the other gripes about these drives I've read in my extensive research prior to purchasing are as follows:
    1) That the disc activity light is obnoxious - I'll agree, but easily remedied by placing the drives out of site

    2) That all drives needed to be on in order to daisy chain - I personally fail to see this as a problem and was unable to find any other reliable drives at this price point that allowed otherwise.

In short, these drives are rugged and they last. The information I have stored on them is vital and they have yet to let me down. There are few brands I would trust as much. I'd give them 4.5/5 stars.

    Lost it all!

    • Written by from San Diego

G-Raid has been my pick for the last years. I have never had any problems with other units until I recently purchased this stupid 2T drive. THE DRIVE UNMOUNTS WITHOUT WARNING! The last time it happened it corrupted ALL of my files. I had to pay $1,000.00 (yes, that's how much it costs here in Brazil) for someone to retrieve them. SOOO FRUSTRATING!

    Annoying lamp

    • Written by

This is my first external hard drive experience. It's been easy and the performance using firewire 800 seems just fine. One thing I have to mention: the small white light on the front of the drive is completely ridiculous. It flickers madly when performing any function. Since I like to work in a fairly dark room it was uber distracting. Help on line says to cover it with tape. Ugh. So, 4 out of 5.
