Easy & reliable for old video tapes

    • Written by

I bought this to transfer a pile of old VHS home movies into iTunes. It could hardly be easier, and the quality seems quite good for only a hundred bucks (although I'd forgotten how crummy VHS looks compared to DVD).

The only issue I had is a couple of tapes had crinkled areas at the beginning, which it had a hard time with. But I was able to just skip forward a little bit to the non-damaged area and then it worked fine.

Works as advertised and so simple to use.

Simply put this item works and is super easy to use. Includes all needed cables. Transferred videos are compressed so that don't use much Hard drive space. Video Quality is as good as original and if you imported into iMovie you could re-edit and enhance video with all the features that iMovie has. It was great to preserve 20 year old video that now I have on my Mac and even uploaded some to facebook for my friends and family to see. I normally don't take the time to write reviews but in my book this item gets a 10.

Shout out to the Easton Apple Store as they are always helpful

    Thank You

    Does exactly as described

    • Written by from Brooklin

It took me 5 minutes from taking it out of the box to digitizing my first VHS tape....4 minutes was spent trying to open the packaging. It couldn't be easier to convert an analog VHS tape to .H264 - wow.

Others have described "choppy" playback - I don't know what their hardware is, but my iMac was from early 2008 and I've upgraded it to 3GB of RAM. I've converted 2 tapes (one 2 1/2 hours the other 1/2 hour), watched both and haven't noticed any "choppy" playback they speak of.

The software is terribly simply and hardware is in my mind flawless. I only wish I had purchased this sooner.

    Worked as promised!

    • Written by from Sydney

I purchased this product even though I was aware of the negative reviews, and fortunately, I was not disappointed.

I used it to copy all of my old analog video tapes from an older Sony camcorder onto my iMac. The interface was straightforward and simple and the finished results were great. I did not experience any video jitter or audio dropouts in any of the 42 tapes I copied.

I was able to import easily into iMovie for editing, and dropped a couple of them onto my iPod, and I have to say, that for 24 year old video, the results are pretty darn good.

    Works Perfect!

Very easy to set-up and use on my '09 MacBook with OS 10.6.8. Transferred VHS (old 8mm originally) to Digital. I think the price is more than fair for what I was able to accomplish. I now have some very happy family members whom all received a DVD copy.

    Elgato video capture

    • Written by from san diego

Finally I found a solution that I have been trying to tackle for the last 4 years.
How do I get my video 8 Pal format to my PC and then burn to DVD?
Well I can't believe that it was this easy....
I had at least 40 tapes to transfer,I'm sure if I would have used a professional service I could have bought another IPad.
    Well I'm a satisfied customer.

Re: Choppiness on Elagato Video Capture

    • Written by from CHEVY CHASE

Just got my Video Capture recently, so I haven't yet experimented too much. But I did read the reviews saying that the video comes out somewhat choppy, or stuttering. My limited experimentation so far has shown that the video is sporadically choppy if I record a 16:9 show using the 4:3 settting. When the original source aspect ratio is the same as the Video Capture setting, the choppiness seems to go away. Also, I have only used a cable DVR as a source. I suppose other inputs, such as VCRs (particularly with low quality recording/tape), could also add choppiness. Curious about other's experiences. Hope this is helpful.

    Amazing

    • Written by from San Francisco

Incredibly simple to use, and the size of a 1st gen iPod shuffle. Quality is good (you can definitely tell it's from a VHS source, not Elgato's fault though). I am now transcoding all my old VHS family movies from childhood so they won't get lost or further deteriorate. Definitely worth the money!

    Exceeded Expectations - Great Product

    • Written by from Sussex

Within 5 minutes of opening the box I was able to record video, edit it in iMovie and export it to YouTube, the process was amazing, far above my expectations. The audio and video was totally in sync and picture quality was awesome. I used it with my DirectTV DVR, and I plan on trying it on some other analog devices like DVD player, and old VHS tapes. I am excited to capture more content.

Easy to use. Worked great. Of course the quality is only as good as the tape image being transferred. I would recommend. Transferred all my years of VCR tapes and very pleased.

    So easy

    • Written by from Tacoma

If all you want to do is record VHS tapes over to DV files with easy to use gear, this is it.
I used it with S-cable and the picture is clean as VCR gets. I bought and tried two other types of devices to do the same thing and had nothing but problems. One was for PC and the other for Mac. To make a long story short, Elgato Video Capture is the way to go.
Sensible, well made product, at a good price that works!

This product works perfectly fine in my hands. So far I have converted over 35 VHS and digital tape videos made over a period of time since 1986 using a MacBook Pro. I am guessing that some folks had terrible experience because of an inadequate computer.

This is a great image transferring device that is so easy to use. Saves a lot of money from taking old VHS, 8mm and VHS-c to have transferred to DVD. Couldn't ask for anything easier and uncomplicated to use.
