    Great Scanner!!/FORGET SOFTWARE

    • Written by from Selah

DO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THE SCANNER/DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AND JUST TUCK THE INSTALL CD AWAY SOMEWHERE. Simply plug the scanner in via the USB cable and slide the unlock switch on the bottom of the unit. Then go into "image capture" in your stock MAC applications and start scanning away. It took me 3 minutes to unpack the scanner and 1 minute to plug it in. DONE!! I am running Snow Leopard. NO PROBLEMS. If you are going to scan 35mm negatives I suppose you will have to wade through the messy Cannon CD install process, which many people are having major problems with. But for me I don't use my scanner for that...............

    Perfect with Snow Leopard

    • Written by from San Francisco

I am on a MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. I purchased this scanner on Overstock in Mar 2010. It was incredibly easy to set up and to use. Here's what I did:
    - Plugged in the scanner using the provided USB cable
    - Put a picture on the scanner
    - Launched Image Capture, the scanning software included w Snow Leopard
    - Clicked Scan in Image Capture
Note that I did not install or attempt to install the Canon software provided in the box. The image scanned just fine and dropped right into my Pictures folder (you also have the option of dropping it into iPhoto, Mail, etc.) This is an excellent, small, low-volume scanner for use with a Mac.

    Works fine with Image Capture

    • Written by from New York

I found it worked fine with download of current Canon drivers. But then it was not recognized by Image Capture until I removed the Canon drivers. Works fine now with Image Capture which is a handy scanner software bundled into Snow Leopard. I use it mainly for scanning photos. If I set Image Capture to "Detect Separate Items" it will separate out a group of multiple photos and drop them as individual jpegs into the designated file; a big help when scanning piles of photos. I would like to know if a comparable "Detect Separate Items" feature is available on a PC and/or other Mac software. Another handy feature of the LiDE 700F is power via the USB.2 cable which eliminates an additional power cord.

    Don't Buy!!

    • Written by from NORTH SYDNEY

The product itself and the results quite ok (once you get it working). ... and that's the point. I have gone through a number of version of the software drivers now but it is a nightmare. First, you had to reboot between uses of the product. then a new version seemed to solve it but now no matter how many times I re-install the software drivers, the applications keep saying there is no software. This is my first serious issue with a Canon product so very surprising. Grrr

    Excellent scanner

    • Written by from San Francisco

Very pleased with this purchase. Very nicely made, quick, and after a week, no problems. Like some other reviewers, I use it with Image Capture, which requires no additional software. If you require more extensive functions, the Canon software provides them – if you're prepared to wade through their rather complicated setup process.

Very Easy to Set Up And Use

    • Written by from Spokane

I installed snow leopard as another user suggested and followed their instructions, NOT using the Canon software, but using image capture to run the scanner. It was flawless, fast and easy. The scanner is faster than the last scanner and only requires the USB cable. No power cable Yeah. It is an energy star product!

    Easy Setup

    • Written by from Holland

As a number of other reviewers had advised I did not bother with the Canon install CD, never used it. Plugged in the USB connector, started Image Capture- which recognized the scanner immediately. Wonderful scans the first time. Well pleased.

Works great and it couldn't be easier to set up. Scan time is very quick. Very user friendly. I bought a second one so that I could have one at home and at the office.

Ok if you are running lion, not so good if you are on snow leopard

    • Written by from Anchorage

I use this with a couple machines. one running Lion, where the scanner is responsive and nicely integrated with the system os. But on snow leopard, you are going to have to fiddle with it and reboot a few times to be able to use it. I would say at least half the time i press one of the function keys on the scanner it works. when it doesn't sometimes unplugging the usb cable a few times gets it to recognize the scanner, but if that doesn't work you need to reboot and use the scanner apparently before the computer falls asleep. a complete PITA.
That said, when it works ... it seems pretty good. If you are on lion, i would say yes.
anything else .... um, not so much.

    Great scanner.

    • Written by from Santa Ana

A good replacement for my, now non-OS X Mountain Lion complaint, old Lide 60. Canon Scanners have never gave me problems. The 700f works beautifully, you don't need to install software on OS X 10.8, higher quality scans, faster capture time, good integration with Adobe Photoshop CS6...

BUT (of course)... let the screen or computer go to sleep, get ready to do the USB unplug/plug shuffle. The problem is present if you have the Canon software installed or not, if you put the hard drive to sleep or not, aaand, it will power off if the screen goes to sleep or the screensaver kicks in.

I can reach the cable in 2 seconds, so it is just an minor inconvenience. But it's something I never had to deal with my Canon Lide 20 or 60. -1 star for sleep problem, -1 star for no solutions/fixes on the Canon site. =/

    Does not wake from sleep

    • Written by from Playa del Rey

Works fine with Image Capture until the Mac goes to sleep. When it wakes up you have to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in. Image Capture reports that "Scanner reported an error", "An error occurred while communicating with the scanner". The updated driver does not fix this issue.

Scan quality is OK, but the way the interface is written I have a tendency to overwrite the last scan file with the newest one without warning.

    it does scan 35mm

    • Written by from Ahoskie

actually if you want professional scan, do not buy it, the quality of the 35mm is under expected ,plus it can not scan 120,and it;s easy to get broke ,its too weak

    WORST EVER!!!

    • Written by from Ann Arbor

After 8 hours with Apple care, and more with Canon support. The scanner still only works for continues scans, If you should need to walk away for more then 5 mins you have to reboot the computer, or unplug the scanner. I have tried Apple Logging IOUSB kext, i have tried using developer tools USB prober to reset the MAC USB buss. I have reset the SMC PRAM, I have tried countless IOUSB kexts , Several version of Canon software, and even several version of Canon IJscanner 1 and 2 OS kernal interface. I was not even aware of all the files that i have become aware of with this scanner. I have tried a modification to a Arch=x86_64 for a 64 bit Kernel and 32bit kernel I have been working on trying to make this scanner working so long now, it can not be returned. I will have to buy another one.(it will not be a canon) I still do not know if the issue (on all 4 Macs running snow, New Imac, New Mac book pro, Mac mini Server running Snow server, Mac Pro tower) is an apple USB bus sleeping issue or a canon driver issue. here is the Canon official response:
    Dear XXXX:

In some cases, coming out of sleep mode may not properly reinitialize
the USB bus on Macintosh Operating Systems. Unfortunately, the only
work around when this happens is to restart the computer.

Of course this in not exactly true as logging out and back in fixes it.

this was the response despite my explaining the Mac did not need to sleep for it to not work.

You can install the Canon driver, but ONLY the driver

    • Written by from Norwalk

I have had no problems in Snow Leopard. I only installed the LiDE 700F Scanner Driver 14.11.3 from the Canon USA web site. I did not install anything else, like the "ICA" driver or any of the other software. It works fine with Image Capture, and more importantly for me, it works fine with Adobe Acrobat's Document > Scan to PDF feature.

Four stars because of the bad software.

    Can't Scan 35mm Slides

    • Written by from MINNEAPOLIS

The info on this scanner is somewhat misleading in that it says it will do 35mm film. This, plus another comment on this site led me to believe it would scan 35mm slides. Not so, and confirmed by a call to Canon. Since scanning 35mm slides was my reason for buying this scanner, it was useless to me. Fortunately Apple's easy return allowed me to exchange it for another Canon model which will handle 35mm slides.

    It DOES scan 35mm film.

    • Written by

User JP is wrong. It does scan film and even on Canon's site shows a picture of the included 35mm mask in action. You can even go on flickr and search CanoScan LiDE 700F and you'll see tons of scanned film using this scanner.

You have to use the 35mm film mask to scan film. It shines light through the back of the film so it can be scanned. If you scan film without it nothing will show up.

This scanner, although not the best, it is the best for your buck. This is great for people who use a MacBook (not pro). The quality isn't as great as the Epson v600 but you really need a Mac Pro to hunt down the differences.

I noticed some people complain about the drivers, Vuescan Scanner Software is the best driver for any scanner, period. Imagecapture works great but you're not going to be able to access the scanners built in on-the-fly features.

    Good Scanner - somewhat Limited

    • Written by from Lynnwood

Chose this scanner because of resolution and USB powered. Apple shipped it in its original box - no shipping box. The box came badly damaged and ugly tape all over the box. The scanner was missing two of its rubber feet. Tried it for a few days and discovered that it might have a limit on the area it can scan based on resolution - the larger the resolution the smaller the selected scan area has to be otherwise "scanner reports an error" message will come up and cannot scan. Reduce the scan area or drop the resolution and you are good to go. No information on this on the Internet - just my haunch. I will give it two stars because I am a fan of Apple although I expected better shipping. Lion readily recognizes the scanner and uses it. Canon does not have its own drivers for Lion. The disk that came with it does not run with Lion - thank Goodness. Returning this one and continuing to shop around.
