This is a very addicting game, but too bad that it is entirely too easy and can be beat in only a few days. Perfect for the average gamer who likes to play every now and again but not for someone who takes their games seriously.

Improved from earlier versions

I spent hours playing the original Pirates! and the Pirates! Gold games. Overall, many things have been improved over those older versions. You're able to have much longer careers and the crew does not become as mutinous as quickly. The engine for invading a city is much better.
You can now see ships on the water, so there is no more sailing aimlessly looking for someone to attack.
Downsides:
Except for on rare cases, fencing is laughably easy and the size of your crew seems to have little bearing. In the old games if you crashed a sloop with 64 sailors into a War Galleon with over 200, your opponent would have a distinct advantage when the fight begins. No longer.
Sneaking into town is cool at first, but it gets increasingly tedious once you have to do it to get into every Spanish town.

Overall this was a big improvement over the original. The graphics and game play was improved; however, I reached the highest retierment level my first game. I remeber playing for hours as a kid (even marying the "hottie") and only reaching colonel. That is my only complaint. Overall great game and flashback.
