I put these on and turned on my new Nas playlist in iTunes and listened to his new album. I was blown away! It sounded so different. So much better than it did coming out off the Bose system in my SUV. I couldn't believe it. I thought that my Bose system was the ish These things bring music to life. I hate to sound like a commercial so I won't go any further. Just listen for yourself!

When I received this as a gift, being an avid music nut I fully appreciated the quality and comfort styling. But to be perfectly honest the cost is excessive for this product.I myself would not buy it and I am sure could find something just as good in quality for alot less.So if you can blow the money go ahead, but for those needing value as well as quality keep looking.

To be honest, these are the best headphones ever. They are better than Bose Headphones, but Bose Headphones are still good. I would recommend anyone who loves music to buy these. These Headphones are worth every dollar.

    Brutally overpriced

    Written by BS from Savannah

Very colored, hyped at the high and low end, and only begin to wake up with Hip-hop and Rap only. (Go figure, a headset created in collaboration with a rap producer.) The average joe will listen to them and might be impressed because of the qualities I described in them and then they will see Monster and Dr. Dre on the box and will scrounge every last penny to get a pair and go on thinking they are the best headphones on the market. "I paid $350 for these and they are by Monster, they must be undeniably good." Along the same exact lines that Bose does with their QC2s and the incessant hype commercials on TV.

I now have a much better understanding of exactly who these are marketed to and it is too bad that they screwed up such a great concept by being so cheap. Ideally they would have been more reasonably priced, designed and sound significantly better. They want to awaken the average joe to how moving good sound quality can be and develop an appreciation for fidelity in audio and with such an easily recognizable name they could get that exposure. I think we all get it but it is like trying to convince a vegan to eat an overcooked $3 steak. OK, so not that bad, they do have their moments when they sound nice but there must be some sort of on-the-fly adjusting DSP built into them because the SQ seems to vary even in the same song.

The packaging is quite smart because it is fairly well designed and clever which adds to the illusion of a "quality" product. Once you hold them in your hands you can tell they are cheaply made. The design of the actual headphones is nice but holding them in your hands alone instantly tells you that they should cost ~$100 at most.

Back to the sound, they are very forward and exhibit distortion in the strangest frequencies even at low levels, yet exaggerate others. (It is almost as if the frequency response curve is a roller coaster.) There is a lot of bass and every now and then it can sound nice but it seems you feel the drivers through the ear cups more than you hear the actual output. To briefly sum up the overall SQ, they sound synthetic.

Now, they aren't horrible and they will absolutely smoke stock earbuds and headphones that come with portable players but it is the people coming from lower end sound gear that Monster is hoping these will appeal to.

great sound and very cool but watch out travelers

    Written by PH from Madison

    Jul 26, 2008

sound is fantastic, tight bass, detailed high's, great separation. The sound canceling effect does not "space out" the sound the way Bose's does - so much better. They look so cool with the shiny black and red finish. Only downsides are for travelers: the sound "leaks" a lot so could be annoying for fellow passengers although only at quite high volumes. Also the case is quite large in height and would be difficult to cram into a computer messenger bag. Overall a great buy and will take on longer trips but continue with my Shure Earbuds for shorter trips.

I just received these in the mail today and I must say that these are the best sounding headphones I have heard. They handle the bass real well. I just heard the new G-Unit album (T.O.S.) with them and it sounds great. The build quality is good as well as the sound quality. I highly recommend these especially to those who hear music with a lot of bass in it.

The people writing these reviews are either hyping this product up or have never heard good sound. Get an amplifier and get yourself a real set of headphones and these headphones will sound horrendous in fact they do. I was in the apple store in nyc and i hooked them up to my portable amp and they sounded horrible. I'm a huge dre fan and i am disappointed.

    A decent headphone

Written by DF from White Plains

    Jul 28, 2008

I currently own BOSE QC 2's, so when I heard about the Beats of course I was curious. Design is great, they are beautiful headphones, well constructed and solid to the touch. Upon listening to them here is what I took from it: The dynamic range is good, yes you can differentiate the different tones in the music you hear, high's are sharp so are mid tones, but I found the base a tad muted, which surprised me as just about everything Dr Dre does has a awesome baseline. Over all they sound very good. However the noise canceling functionality of the headphones did not live up to the BOSE, the BOSE NC is far superior to the beats. So that said, I give it 3 stars, because of the NC and the price.

    Not impressed

    Written by RL

    Jul 29, 2008

I'm a huge Dr. Dre fan and thought that the hype was real about these headphones; I was wrong. They are, in my humble opinion, just above average headphones. I absolutely love the design, feel, and quality of the headphones, but when I started listening to a song, I became disappointed. The song was by Dr. Dre and encoded in Apple lossless format. The most noticeable thing was that the bass was not very strong AT ALL. My ears became really hot in just a few minutes, and I was just disappointed! I have a pair of V-Moda Bass Freq earbuds that I bought for $30 that had MUCH better bass, and actually overall sound/value than these. Overall, this product was over hyped and is way too expensive. $150 or less in terms of value in my opinion.

These, by far, are the most intelligently designed, patiently engineered, and overall greatest quality headphones out today. Being a music producer, myself, I can boldly and proudly say Beats by Dr. Dre are headphones that deliver sound how I want to deliver it. No other pair has given, or can even give the effect or sound of raw, real music the way it's meant to when it is created.

    Worth the Price

    Written by EF

    Jul 30, 2008

These really are excellent sounding headphones for ipod addicts (like myself) and travelers who love the complete surround sound while watching a movie on the computer.

I love listening to music while I'm working on a project and to be quite honest I thought my not so cheap headphone I got in Europe a few years ago sounded good enough, but when I received these headphones as a gift and compared the two... I was blown away! They may not be the very best headphones on the planet (I don't think my ears could take it) but to me they are far superior than anything I've heard recently and I used to swipe my husbands Bose headphones all the time when I forgot my own. Now, he can keep them... I found a new love.

The music is so clear and concise and if you are a classical music lover, I promise you, you will hear notes you never heard before. I myself will listen to just about everything from indie, hip hop, classic rock and more and they have all taken on a fresh sound when I listen with these headphones. It's like having a whole new library of music to listen to. I spend way too much time scrolling through my music library thinking "I wonder how this song will sound, or that will sound". So far, it's delivered every single time.

The only proof you need is a trip to the Apple store with your current headphones or ear buds and you can judge for yourself. Trust me you will not be disappointed.

    Great! (but not OMG AWESOME!!!!)

    Written by DJ from Emeryville

    Jul 30, 2008

sound is subjective. personal preferences vary. differing music genres exhibit a wide range of behavior. finding a single set of headphones for all occasions is a nearly impossible task.

sadly, i average 2 or 3 headphone purchases a year in a futile attempt to chase down the perfect sound. i bought a pair of these based on the notion that they were designed to expand the experience of dumbed-down mixing that audio engineers have been reduced to now that MP3 and AAC are standard. i can't say it does that. with full over-the-ear headphones i expect an all-encompassing aural sensation. with these, i still feel a level of remove from the sound... the perfect headphones would allow me to feel as though i stepped into the music and am living it, not just hearing it one-dimensionally. so these aren't the perfect headphones.

this is my first pair of noise-cancelling headphones, so i wasn't prepared for the low-level hiss. i guess that is endemic to NC headphones, but i like the silent bits and pauses to be dead still, like a vacuum of sound. the level of hiss varies depending on the source... i bought these for use with my iPhone, and the level of hiss is tolerable given the environment i use them in, but using them with my TV, the hiss was like a constant breeze on a chilly day, unwanted and annoying.

the one surprise is that i expected these to be constantly bass heavy. they aren't. the bass has substance and richness without rattling my teeth. i tend to prefer heavy bass... part of the desire to "feel" the music physically, but there are times when its just uncalled for and these headphones tend to get that just right. no small feat. based on other's reviews elsewhere (time magazine) i was also expecting brighter highs. you know, THX level crystal clarity. nope. not here.

wearing the headphones is quite comfortable and i think the build quality is excellent. i think the "beats by dr.dre" text on the top of the headset cheapens the look quite a bit.

given all the caveats, i'd enthusiastically recommend these at half the price. they do sound great. but for $350 i'm looking for sensory-deprivation-tank-full-body-immersion. i plan on keeping them simply because i haven't found anything better and have yet to find the perfect cartwheel-inducing headset.

    Right Noise Canceling??

Written by SC from Saint Paul

    Jul 30, 2008

I am just wondering there is anyone who can feel the distorted sound during wearing this headphone. I mean this is my first experience to use noise canceling system. When I walk or a bit running, the music from my ipod touch through headphone, i think actually it comes from the headphone itself, was distorted. The sound was like shaking electronic waves. Is this normal case for the noise canceling or do I have to complain about this? I understand the fundamental function of noise canceling , send an opposing signal against surrounding noise but I want to make sure that I have a right one cuz its pricey.

    Terrible...

Written by DM from Costa Mesa

    Jul 31, 2008

I Strongly dislike these headphones. I tested them out at one of the many fine apple retail stores, but i was shocked when i heard these headphones. Everything sounded terrible, my Sennheisers sound ten times better and i picked those up for $50. The price that they are asking for is just rediculous, much respect towards Dr. Dre, but I dont like his name thrown on bad headphones so they could be sold for more. People, take my advise and pass.
