Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
The Only Review You Will Need
Written by SB from Roslyn Heights
Dec 6, 2009
Sound Quality- You would think this of all things would be the most important aspect of a pair of headphones. Not so with there. I have a paid $150 for a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50's, and they sound better. Not to say the Beats are terrible, they are don't measure up to other headphones in this price range. These will only blow away people used to stock earbuds, etc. 7/10.
Looks- Amazingly sleek and awesome. Just look at the pictures.
Build Quality- Wobbly, unstable, and every time you close them- they make a horrible snapping sound. It feels like you will break them! My left cup slides down all the time. Don't feel like $300 dollar headphones should. 6/10
Comfort- Amazing! Sit on your head perfectly, and enclose your ears. Your ears will never get sweaty, and you will want to wear them for hours on end. A little heavy for headphones but the comfort makes up for it. 10/10.
Noise Canceling- Creates a slight pressure on your ears, uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it. I don't fly often, but I used them on the bus today. Steady frequencies in the lower range are totally canceled. Mid-range and high frequencies are barely muffled. Voices are still there, as are any sudden noises. Only long frequencies (engines, air conditioners, etc.) are affected at all. Bose QC15's do a better job in this category, but create more pressure than the beats. With music all noises are gone, so I don't care. Bose QC15's actually cancel too much. You can't listen to music without the noise canceling on, which requires two AAA batteries. Creates a soft white noise in the background which you quickly forget about. 9/10.
Accessories- Lackluster cleaning cloth, airplane adapter, and horribly manufactured "iSoniTalk" cable. Hard case is ok. 3/10.
Price- These headphones are worth $150. I would consider $200 if I really needed the noise canceling (if I traveled a lot). I know it might be overwhelming, but consider other headphones from brands like Sennheiser, AKG, Grado, etc. They have double the sound quality for half the price.
Who does this appeal to? It appeals to "hip" people ages 10-25. Kids see celebrities or whoever endorses these. It is the "hot" product. Monster charges a ridiculous amount for one reason- people will pay it to look cool. This product has genius marketing behind it, but no actual substance.
Final Thoughts- I returned these. Getting studio headphones made much more sense. Sound that ACTUALLY sound like it does in the studio. Why? Because that is what they made the song on! Not Beats! They cost about half as much, and last forever. They are build solid and have anywhere from 2 to 10 years of warranty. They are actually respected among the audio world, not just fashion accessories. If that doesn't convince you, maybe this will. If you buy a pair of ATH-M50 headphones, they are around 150 dollars. They will sound better, and last longer. What would you buy with the $150 you save?
This was a long review, but I was completely honest. Please rate this review up, so people can read a real review. I didn't bash the Beats, or mindlessly praise them. I gave praise where it was due, and pointed out the flaws. It is up to you to decide.11 of 11 people found this useful

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
Good sound, cheap construction
Written by AS from Los Angeles
Sep 4, 2009
Performance: Similar to Bose QC2, more enveloping bass, however it also uses 2 batteries instead of 1 (bose). Although the bass shakes the cans, it isnt deep. Highs arent very high either.
QC2 has better noise reduction
Construction: Headphone assembly is held in place to the headband by two little plastic "rods." One of these broke after 4 months of use, which now causes the headphone to fall out and dangle when not worn. Im currently working on getting these replaced.
Pros:
Decent sound quality
Mute button is neat
Good cable construction
Mic cord is neat
folds up
Cons:
Pricey
Cheap engineering/construction
require 2 batteries compared to Bose's 1
extremely wide
Overall:
Get the Bose QC2. Similar performance, pros and cons balance out. The only reason I got this was because it looked nice. With my experience with Bose, they stand behind their products even when its out of warranty. Ill update on how Monster handles my problem15 of 22 people found this useful

Good but not worth the money
Written by BD from Charlemont

These headphones have good sound, no doubt. But for $300 these are an absolute rip-off. I bought these after hearing them at the store and was impressed. The real problem is that I didn't bring my own headphones to compare. When I got home I still thought they sounded good but after comparing it to my Sony MDR-V6s they didn't sound much better. They have a little too much focus on bass and it just wasn't doing it for me. There are better headphones out there and at this price I would recommend Sennheiser or Audio Technica. They have much higher quality products for the money in both build quality and sound.

Too much for what it is.

Bought them...had them for two days and then returned them. The build quality is not that great...a bit flimsy if you ask me...Now, the styling is outstanding. The sound quality is pretty good...a lot of bass, good highs, ok midrange representation... they are balanced! They pretty great with Ipod/Iphone because Beats have built in amp THAT REQUIRES BATTERIES. Not cool!!! They leak a lot of sound, everybody will her what you are listening to. No cool!
Bottom line...there are better option w/better sound....and a lot cheaper!!! For example, I bought Denon D2000...they are AMAZING! And $100 less....and no batterie needed!18 of 25 people found this useful

Ok - good sound - but batteries ???

So I am still looking for my perfect pair of iphone headphones - almost had it with these - the key word is almost - I am looking for a pair that doesnt have a ton of cord noise with movement (any in ear has way too much for me - cant stand the constant rubbing of wires etc) and these are great at that - the quality of the build is awesome - the cables have an option to use a cable with an inline mic and button(which the stupid bose ones do not have - the button ) - so you can use these for voice control on the 3gs without taking the phone out - which is clutch. The cables are rubberized and sturdy the headphones feel great and sound amazing (had to turn on low bass on my phone though) -- the problem I realized after one day is that these need batteries - even if you dont want the noise cancelling you have to have them on to work at all - and I left them on my first day (who remembers to turn off there headphones??) and the batteries were dead. Ugggh -- so close to a perfect pair.

It's good but not great
Written by FV from Honolulu

It needs a few improvements. Like making the noise cancellation more effective and better insulation so the sound won't leak a lot. I want an on/off button for the noise cancellation. I don't like the fact that I can't use it unless the noise cancel is on.I love the design and it sounds good. But if monster produce one with the improvements I mentioned. I would buy that definitely.

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
The biggest problem is the price
Written by NW from Cambridge

I tried these out at an apple store a few nights ago and first things first... the bass will make your eyes bleed. It thumps all the other sounds right out of your ear and practically humps the side of your head. Also... it wasn't good bass, it was distorted and at times completely drowned out the FOLK song i was listening to so i can't even begin to imagine what hip-hop would sound like coming out of them... prolly irecoygnizable. Everything sounded thick and heavy and filled with BASS. this being said, i loved them. even though it was a bit much they were great, when you could hear vocals through the pounding of bass they were good and i would defiantly buy them if it wasn't for the price which is ludicrous. All in all, they're good but if u have the $ to spend i suggest you spend it else where.

WAY overrated
Written by BT from Eufaula

I tried a pair out at an Apple store. Way overrated compared to its price tag. All these people saying Bose is better, are wrong. They are just fanboys. If you want true audiophile phones, go with AKG, Grado, Sennheiser, etc... These Beats do sound good, but not good enough for the steep price tag.
These are not very good for acoustic music.
My only advice, TRY THEM BEFORE YOU BUY THEM!96 of 137 people found this useful

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
Heavily unbalanced, but read on.
Written by HR from Sunnyvale
Dec 21, 2008
Names should pretty much explain this headphone itself; this one is BASSY.
Sound is.. er.. GREAT (if you only listen to like 2-3 genres that only focuses heavily on... well.. BEATS), but also BAD (if you DON'T....)
I guess the unbalance isn't AS bad as some other headphones out there (but trust me.. you will need to do a LOT of custom EQ'ing for each song..), but considering it's $350, I don't know why you would get this and get a limited sound.
It's really up to you, but PLEASE bring your own ipod (because.. well most apple stores have ipods with like.. 10 songs on it :P ) or something and PLAY different genre of music.. you'll see what I mean by "limited".
THEN if you still like it, and want to be lazy and spend $350 on this baby, go ahead, after all it IS your money. :)

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
sounds better in some areas but shares the same issues as most
Written by CN from San jose
Dec 15, 2008
Ive burned thru several pairs of Noise-canceling headphones and one thing I've learned is that the electronics involved in noise-canceling is fragile, and the headphones degrade over time. With that aside, these headphones excel with the sound of heavy dance music, but the Bose (since everyone's comparing) and the Audio Technica's that I decided on, did a better job with all types of music.
Ive decided on a pair of Audio Technica Quiet Point's for when i want noise-cancelling (airplane, office etc) as they were $100 and do just as good a job as the bose headphones, handle all music, and left me with some money in my pocket to pay my mortgage. I had the original Bose Quiet Comfort headphones and they fell apart after a year. All noise-canceling headphones have a "buzz" as mentioned a lot, its more of a strange de-phasing sound to me, and it causes discomfort after a while--like my ear is being pulled out from the reverse phasing process. That buzz got more and more prevalent in the Bose's. I wonder how the monster/dre headphones will fare after a year or 2.
If i want to make beats in the studio, i dont use headphones. I use speakers. If i had to use headphones for that, I will continue to use my trysty Sony MDRV700 DJ headphones, as they're built like a rock, unlike your average fragile noise-canceling headphone. And no batteries required :)42 of 56 people found this useful

well, it is not that...

I tested it half hour at apple store another day. the sound is nice. but it only seems to work with loud music like hiphop, electronica, rock. classic, other music which needs human voice mostly is not really. unfortunately pumping the bass is only working for hiphop that it is coincident, made by Dr. Dre. rock is not much pump with that much price tag. headphone design is cool though. I could say it is little over price, exaggerated sound detail by public. so I can only give it three stars.

Disappointingly fragile...
Written by AV from Campbell
Sep 29, 2008
Got a pair last week. Liked the sound, they look good, the constant hiss might be a nuisance for some, but overall these are fairly good headphones, albeit pricey.
This morning, I put on the headphones, and actually cracked the headband (right where the silver Monster logo is)... The headphones still work, but they do not sit right on my head anymore.
Some will say I have a big head... maybe. Still, I now understand why most headphones don't have hard brittle plastic as headband material.
I wanted to love these headphones, can't anymore... guess I am off to a nice pair of HD650 (which are actually cheaper than these)!

Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones from Monster
Great sounding headphones, but overpriced
Written by KS from Toronto
Sep 4, 2008
So I bought the beatsbydre headphones and after listening to them for two days on my commmutes to and from downtown Toronto via bus and subway I have the following to say..
Pros:
1. Sound - the bass is not overwhelming, very well balanced sound
2. Appearance - they look really stylish, definitely an eye catcher
3. Comfort - can be worn for extended periods of time. my commute is over an hour and it felt just fine
4. Noise cancelling - does a decent job of cancelling external noise. keeping the volume of my music at the halfway mark drowned out conversation noise. i could still hear the train. u could probably get better noise cancelling from the Shure line or from the Sennheiser PXC 350.
Cons:
1. Price - at $400 other better headphones are available from manufacturers such as Shure, Sennheiser, AKG etc.
2. Sound leakage - ppl around you will be able to hear whatever ur listening. the CNet review also recognizes this. i noticed this at even minimal volumes.
3. Right headcup shakes a bit. also noted by CNet.
Would I recommend this to others? Probably not. you can get something better for a cheaper price, although they may not look as nice as the beats. I will be returning this item cuz its too overpriced. The headphones aren't bad for Monsters first attempt. I look forward to see what they do next.105 of 126 people found this useful

...not bad really, however other headphones out there are more affordable and of equally acceptable quality as these...
...these come with the hype association of dr. dre, and to maintain the lifestyle of the said dr dre they will have to cost you this much though wouldn't they...
...i'd look elsewhere really...35 of 60 people found this useful

A decent headphone
Written by DF from White Plains
Jul 28, 2008
I currently own BOSE QC 2's, so when I heard about the Beats of course I was curious. Design is great, they are beautiful headphones, well constructed and solid to the touch. Upon listening to them here is what I took from it: The dynamic range is good, yes you can differentiate the different tones in the music you hear, high's are sharp so are mid tones, but I found the base a tad muted, which surprised me as just about everything Dr Dre does has a awesome baseline. Over all they sound very good. However the noise canceling functionality of the headphones did not live up to the BOSE, the BOSE NC is far superior to the beats. So that said, I give it 3 stars, because of the NC and the price.

When I received this as a gift, being an avid music nut I fully appreciated the quality and comfort styling. But to be perfectly honest the cost is excessive for this product.I myself would not buy it and I am sure could find something just as good in quality for alot less.So if you can blow the money go ahead, but for those needing value as well as quality keep looking.
