Pretty cool game but was tough for me to install/update

    Written by RS from Douglasville

    May 7, 2009

I came close to not buying this based on the complaints about the DRM and problems with the update patches.

It took me about three reinstalls and four efforts at updating the program (about 3.5 hours) before it finally worked and I was able to get it registered and activated on my late 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.5.6. That was frustrating to say the least and I'm an experienced Mac user.

I finally got it up and running however and the gameplay is very novel. I'm a casual gamer without a lot of time to devote to it so I don't expect the novelty for me will wear off very fast but it probably will for more serious gamers that have more time to devote to it. With the install/update bugs, it's a coin toss as to whether I'd recommend it for others though. If you can deal with the bugs and don't plan on playing the game for hours-on-end each day, it's probably a good buy.

    Good game but...

    Written by RZ from Ridgefield

like someone said earlier, it won't let me install updates; so that's a bit of a hassle. the game also tends to freeze up or crash while playing, and it doesn't automatically save, so all the progress I made (which is usually a lot) gets lost. another thing I don't really like about the game is if you decide you want to start over with a planet, it deletes the whole planet, not just the game on it. I've had to delete some planets I was a fan of just because I wanted to start over with a new creature. but overall the graphics are good, the game is fun, it's just those nitpicky things that make it faulty.

    OK but frustrating

Had a difficult time loading the game. Then It will not allow me to import and install updates. It will not allow some parts of game play (perhaps do to the failure of updates to work). I really need to find a good game for the mac.

ok but gets boring and not stable

    Written by SL from Andover

I recommend this game but gave it 3 stars because after a week it gets old and tiring
I do not recommend the game for the iphone, I think there are so many better games out there now that it is not worth the money, it was a waste, but that is for another review.

I bought this game for my 24" imac after I tried the version on my iphone.
The game ran nice and I got hooked on it and made it to space. However several times my machine would just crash and I would lose hours of playing. After few times I started to do saves to insure I am backed up, this helped me recover several more crashes. The crash usually happens when there is lots of fighting and activity, the screen goes blank and I get an error and I am kicked out of the game.
I got to a point where I got to the center of universe, I own like 100's of star system and got almost all awards, then it just got boring, I have $99,999,999 money, I have 99 of every tool and gadgets, I have so many areas I can pick up spice, nothing more to do.

The bad thing about the game is that when I am in one side of the star system, I get alerts that eco system is dying in another part and I don't get any visual message to know which part of the system as I am spread all over the galaxy. Also it got so easy to make alliance that it got boring after awhile.
I made alliance with all my neighbors but they want to go to war with each other, so I just let them fight until one starts to win and and Then I go in and take over the planets and finish the job, fun at first but boring and predictable.

I guess this is when you stop playing and move on....

After awhile all the aliens sound the same and predictable, I ended up turning off the sound effects as it got annoying.

Finally I don't really see the big deal about the online community of Spores, you can't play online and it is nothing more then a blog site, not every exciting.

It would have been more exciting if this was updated to a multi-player game...

    Meh... Pretty Good

I do say that it is pretty good but im running this on my old macbook with a GMA950 graphics card and i say it runs great... for the first 3 stages. When i try to go to the civ stage, it crashes and asks if i want to debug it. I say yes. The next time i try the SAME THING happens. The only way for me to play civ is to start a BRAND NEW game.Im glad it runs but it also wont let me update past the first 2 updates so im pretty mad. Overall a good game but im just having some problems with it.

    Spore Good and Bad

    Written by EO

    Dec 10, 2008

Okay. I first bought this game after waiting for months for it to come out that it would be great. It was. At first.

The main problem about this game was the "story line." Mainly, your begin as a tiny cell and grow to a creature, all 3rd person fun. As soon as you get to civilization stage, your hit with a strategy based game, no RPG. All you do is try to get the world to live peacefully or hate you and all die.

I found this very boring after a while because everything is the same, find the galaxy, save planet from the infected, etc. Soon, I played it from 1 hour a day to 30 minutes a week to nothing at all. I miss the game, its not on my computer at all since, I had it restored.

    Pros:

    Great graphics
    Fun cell and creature gameplay
    Worthy creature creator
Good use of publishing creatures, building, etc
    Semi-creative

    Cons:

Gameplay after first 2 stages is terrible
Creators of EVO on atari already made the idea
If creatures have 2 legs VS 4 legs, the walk the same speed.
    Gets boring after a while
Gmaeplay is a tiny bit too simple

Idea is great but needs serious thought on the creatures and the idea of 3rd person throughout or maybe the choice. Game would be good for a while, almost everyone would get bored. I'd recommend getting it just to try it.

    Rating:

    3/5 for Gameplay
    4/5 for Graphics
    2/5 for Originality
    3/5 for Fun

    Overall: 3/5 Worth Playing

    Awesome until space stage

    Written by SR from Stamford

    Nov 1, 2008

I love this game! The sheer openness of it makes it hard to stop playing. It is amazing! However, in the space stage, occasionally an error pops up and no matter if you click "yes" or "no", the game quits without saving. This bug is terrible. I have tried calling my Apple Store, AppleCare, and emailing EA, but nothing has worked so far. If I were buying this game right now, I would wait until they come out with a patch for this problem.

    Mehh...

I was OBSESSED with this game before the release. I checked the website like everyday for updates. I thought is would be "so amazing!", but I bought it, and I was disappointed. As I got to the creature stage, I didn't find much to do. All you an do is eat, attack, make friends and walk around. And also, you are supposed to uninstall the creature creator before you install the game. I installed it, twice, and then I read the "installation" page in the handbook. In probably size 9 font it says "You must uninstall the creature creator before installing this game". Overall, it was just really bland. I don't suggest buying.

Yeah, it`s impressive the hability of creating everything but, it`s also impressive in a negative way the fact that you can`t create more than one account per EA code.In my opinion it`s a great game but it gets limited with the account issue.

    Good game, problems running

    Written by BT from Torrington

I have the new iMac, 2.4 core 2 duo with 4g of ram ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128mb
You think that would be enough to run this game on medium settings, your wrong. I have to play the game on its lowest settings and still is not running smooth. Crashes often too, always after I have been playing for an hour, with out saving, and loose all my progress. No auto save. But a fun game non the less

ex-PC gamer turned Mac User, Thumbs up

Written by SW from North Vancouver

I've recently purchased a MbPro for audio editing and being my first Mac purchase ever I was skeptical about how games actually run on Macs. So I ran out and picked up Spore as soon as I heard about it... this game runs sharp and smooth, and the options to how you want your creature to evolve and look is worth the price tag itself.
As for some people concerned if this would work on your older mac, if you don't have a 512+ video card and 2g or more ram I would advise against purchasing... if you DO have the fore-mentioned specs, go get your evolve on.

This game is awesome except for one thing: AFTER A FEW DAYS IT WON'T START UP!! i played it for 5 glorious days. Then a little error message appeared and now i can't boot it up. I think it might have something to do with my computer. I know it's not the graphics card. if you own a pre-08 macbook or macbook pro, stay away until they manage to fix it. That or install it on boot camp if accessible.

    Almost there

    Written by DL from SASKATOON

Overall this game is above average and falls just short of greatness. If more time would have been spent on the space stage in particular this game would have made 4 stars for me. The space stage is well done but hampered severely by the pestering of small insignificant missions. If EA would have took the space age to the next level and tweaked it a bit and then added to the other levels a bit of planet variety this game could have easily been a 5 out of 5.

Without that, I find my 2nd run through of the game very repetitive and lacking re-playability compared to some other best in class games in the RTS / strategy variety.

    Slow - almost boring

    Written by TL

Come on what is with all the hype? I bought this game thinking it was going to be so fun. It really is a slow paced game. The first part where you have to swim around gobbling up microbes is really really boring. I think the graphics are good and the customization of creatures can be fun but the game seems really boring. And anyways who has the time to spend hours playing this?
