Prosoft Drive Genius 2
good stuff
Written by DD from rockport

The backbone of any innovative software package is the help we get from the designers. For most of us the guts of the program are a little over our heads. And when things get screwy, you need help. Getting a real live person to answer your questions in an informed and prompt manner is what makes these packages a great addition to your computing or else a great big headache.
Twice I needed help with the Drive Genius 2 program and twice got just the help I needed.
Watch out for the Slim Drive option, though. It will cull your iTunes files and remove ones you probably do not want removed. And be sure to choose the archiving option so that anything removed can be retrieved if necessary.
Otherwise, buy it. It's good value and is backed up with good service.2 of 2 people found this useful

I've been using drive genius for several years now. Starting with version 1. Currently I'm using version 2 on my MacPro and MacBook Pro. It has served me well. Always worked great with no problems. I did recently have an issue with a registration number on my MacBook Pro, but Michael in customer service helped me find the solution. Thanks ProSoft & Michael.

Defrag -> Data gone
Written by PG from Palo Alto

Version 2.2.1. Unfortunately have to confirm some of the previous reports, which I did not know prior to using Drive Genius 2. However, Apples Time Machine restore works reliably, so you can play around and count on the restore after having lost your data (i.e. after defrag drive does not mount). BTW: sleep disabled. A 'Genius' product should work like a Genius, like Time Machine is! Thanks Apple developers.

Drive Genius 2.2.1 for Mac Intel
Written by DS from Littleton
Nov 3, 2009
I upgraded my old copy of Drive Genius 2 for my 2 Intel machines at the school I work at. I needed an upgrade to be compatible with SNow Leopard OS. I received a link to download a dmg file to make a bootable disc. I didn't burn it right and wasted a couple of DVDs. I contacted Tech help and they responded with the correct info and the DVD was burned flawflessly. Only problem was I found you should read all drections before doing stuff. I thought I was a seasoned user and fairly smart....not so. I decided to do a full optimization and defrag my hard drive (which really didn't need it).....I neglected to disable the sleep mode (as it said in the instructions I did not read). Cause a big problem becasue the HD would not remount after the process. Had to initialize the HD and reinstall everything. Luckily I backed up with TimeMachine and the resore process was perfect. Drive Genius Tech support was very helpful and supportive. I have used Norton and TechTool Pro in the old days and now I would only use Drive Genius for my Macs......just read stuff first so you don't make problems for yourself.

This product works just as advertised. Its a solid solution to get a backup of your hard disc especially if its your boot drive.
The program didn't work right away. But after contacting the support, I quickly resolved my problem. I must say, I was very pleased with the support.3 of 3 people found this useful

Poof.... and gone is your data.

I used version 2.2.1 of Drive Genius since i thought it was necessary to defrag my Leopard system.
The defrag map was horribly red so i went on and started the defrag.. hours later is happily stated "Done".
My mac has not booted since, PEOF error, invalid catalog!.
Repair was not possible, tried it all...
The only solution was FORMAT DISK.
Luckily I have a Time machine backup and was able to restore my system.
My suggestion… only try Drive Genius if your into Russian roulette.
Lost money in the process……9 of 10 people found this useful

Crashed my HD
Written by EB from Hoboken

I see I am not alone here with troubles. I have a late 08 mbpro with snow leopard. Running v2.2, I ran defrag and it created an error. Disk utility and every other tool I could find showed it as "invalid catalog PEOF", which I interpret as "PEOF! Your data has disappeared!" Numerous websites and the applecare rep have convinced me defrag isn't even needed, so I am kicking myself. Hopefully my time capsule backup isn't too old, I will see tonight.
I don't believe software that does the polar opposite of its intended function should even get 1 star, but I can't give any less.12 of 15 people found this useful

Bought this after reading a review in a mag to defragment me macbook pro. It completely destroyed my hard drive and my mac failed to reboot after defragging. Fortunately I had backed up before defragging!
The only way to get my computer back to life was to reinstall Leopard and then reinstall ALL my original software and my pics wasting a perfectly good Sunday.

Horrible
Written by JF from Melbourne

I have a 2008 mac pro and I do a lot of file transfers, and delete large files from my hard drive. So I thought having a defragmenting program would keep my performance up.
Ran their defragmenter program on my external HD which uses time machine. No apparent problems. So in order to defragment the mac HD drive (boot drive) I had to boot from the DVD disc provided. Ended up moving some important files on my mac HD and my time machine backup drive. Fortunately I was able to recover 400/ 600 GB of data from my first upload to the backup drive which was three months prior.
Bottom line please DO NOT get this software unless you like pretty animations, and corrupting your hard drive. I purchased this program because of the high reviews, just to find out after my mishap that they are misguided and many others have actually gone through the same issues I have. I consider myself extremely competent with computer hardware/software. However this time I got lax with my product review research.15 of 18 people found this useful

Genius is not a good name
Written by GG from Farmers Branch

I just switched over to Mac from PC and although I like my new Mac Pro I think Drive Genius 2 deserves a new name. You can't even defrag your main drive without using the bootable DVD that came with the software. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
I never had this problem with Diskeeper and I never was warned that I may lose my data from defragmenting the hard drive. I could also defrag in the background with Diskeeper. Do you really think I bought this software to defrag my secondary drives?11 of 17 people found this useful

Drive Genius bad Data Rescue good
Written by DA from Batavia

I got Drive Genius from Mac Sales as part of a package deal. Used it to duplicate a drive for a customer and after it had finished I found it had erased the directory on the source drive and copied nothing to the destination drive. Put it down to operator error. Then I tried the same thing on a second drive, different machines, making very sure everything was as it should be, it did the same thing again.
I used Data Rescue to rescue the data on the first drive and chased that around for 1 month before getting the customers data back so it would work again (this was a customers machine and I couldn't just wipe it and start over).
To make a long story short I won't recommend Drive Genius for any thing unless you are looking for a pretty disk for a mobile.
If there were zero stars I would rate it that.
Data Rescue by the same company is great and I have used it since sys 8.18 of 18 people found this useful

At first I was fustrated with Drive Genius II, but that was because I am migrating from using a PC to MAC and I was used to how a PC works. Once Prosoft Tech Support provided more detailed information of the use of their program, it worked just fine. Overall, I am pleased with DG II.

My hard drive had become sluggish by the constant in and out of various files and my Aperture library had grown to almost 40Gb. I needed a reliable way to defragment the drive without risking my photo files. Thanks Drive Genius, you came to the rescue. If the other utilities in the package work as well, you've got a real winner here.
