Neverwinter Nights 2
Solid game
Written by JK from Hilliard
Apr 8, 2008
This is a good game with an interesting, classic story and good gameplay. The character customization options allow for a wide variety of gameplay options.
Only gripe is that the game has some frame-rate issues.187 of 280 people found this useful

Amazing Game.
Written by PS from Windsor
Apr 27, 2008
I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember. This game is now at the top of the pile of my favourites. The only problem that I've had with the game had nothing to do with the game itself, but with my laptop. The graphics card in my MacBook can't handle this game and the chip isn't upgradable. I've been playing it on my home machine and have been loving it!!!
Word to the wise, be sure to look at the specs of the game and compare to your Mac to see if it will work. This game is amazing if your machine can run it...147 of 206 people found this useful

Neverwinter Nights 2
NWN 2 a Shoddy and Dull entry
Written by TD from Toronto
Sep 2, 2008
If you played any of the Baldur's Gate games, you probably got the feeling that the authors really loved the genre and put their hearts and souls into making a great story and a rich gaming experience. While NWN 1 didn't match this level of authorship, it was a playable game with some minor problems we hoped could be overcome in version 2. We had high hopes for NWN 2. Well, here's NWN 2, and we couldn't be more disappointed. On every front, it feels like the authors were just going through the motions, and ineptly at that.
The result is a game that feels like doing your homework instead of going on a high adventure. Add some of the worst voice acting in gaming history, and you've got a real stinker.
Plot: 3/10
The story starts out with some promise, then quickly becomes as dull as dishwater. The plot basically involves endless repeats of this: "We need help. Go and find (insert NPC name here). They're nearby in (insert area x here). You'll need to kill (insert interchangeable anonymous monsters here). Thank you. You're very kind." Yaaaaawwwwwn.
Voice acting: 1/10
Imagine the cast rejects of your high school Christmas play doing voice overs for The Lord of the Rings and you get the picture. (The tiefling rogue in your party is particularly annoying.) Come on - hire some professionals! Remember the amazing voice of the villain in BG Shadows of Amn? I wonder what planet the authors of NWN 2 are living on oh, Planet Beverly Hills 90210.
Character choices only influence the story in meaningless and superficial ways and the dialogue is so amateurish that you'll find yourself interrupting it with mouse clicks just so you don't have to listen to it. Pathetic attempts at internal intrigue within your party amount to "He likes me more, and your dress doesn't match your shoes anyway. WhatEVurrrrrr!"
Game environments: 3/10
In NWN 2, most towns and game areas are little more than a painting. You get the impression that, if you walked around the back of most buildings, you'd find that they were cardboard cut-outs about to fall over in the wind. The most interesting thing about the game environments are the painted textures. Try watching the paint on them dry for excitement. No one sweated the details here. There's little that's creative and none of the sense of "what's around the next corner and behind that secret door?" excitement you see in well designed RPGs. Just walk from one end of the trail to other and kill anything you meet along the way. Booooooooring.
Game mechanics and interface: 3/10
The 3 points are for the fact that the interface doesn't completely break. Camera control is awful. Even in normal navigation you often find the camera in a spot that prevents you from seeing anything. Objects in the landscape frequently get between you and your character -- come on guys, objects blocking the camera should fade out!
Artificial Intelligence of the NPCs should be retitled Artificial Stupidity. The NPCs basically have two settings: "run like chicken with head cut off" or "stand like sheep and pick nose". In the first they are constantly running ahead of the group and charging forward into traps. In the second, they happily stand and watch enemies cleave them with big sharp things. Basic tactical commands are missing (e.g. "stay in formation", "stay behind me", "defend at this spot"). The game would also benefit from the ability to issue quick commands to the entire party.
All in all, the interface is clunky and is less able than interfaces in games more than a decade old.
Overall Recommendation: Do not buy.
We could go on, because there are lots more complaints. But we'll cut to the best advice we can give: Save your money and replay Baldur's Gate and Fallout. They'll be more fun the second time through than NWN 2 is the first time through.59 of 78 people found this useful

Pretty good.
Written by CW from SALT LAKE CITY

This game runs well on a 2.4 Ghz I would not recommend anything under 2.0. 1.8 is extremely slow. this game has good graphics and features the only thing I do not like is the controls. They are different from any other I have ever played and it takes a little while to get used to. over all it was a good game. You will like this game.

Will not work
Written by TR from Santa Cruz
Oct 24, 2009
This game simply will not function with Snow Leopard. This was the first thing I bought after having bought a brand new Imac with Snow leopard preloaded and it consistently crashes. I stopped playing after getting to an inn and being unable to leave the main room without a crash. A patch was rumored to be in the works but there has been no further web comment to my knowledge since early Sept '09. Avoid buying until you hear of a specific Snow Leopard patch from Aspyr. Less than useless as currently sold.

A Must Have
Written by JG from Licking

Make sure you read the system requirements. Also, only the PC version has the toolset included. Top notch game, easy to learn if you are new. Great story line with many options. Great graphics, runs great on my MacBookPro... makes me wish I had a new G5! I have not had any frame rate issues... if you do check your settings.

Good, But Description Is Misleading
Written by GG from Cleveland
Jun 17, 2008
Neverwinter Nights 2 is a solid, fun western RPG if there ever was one. Based off of D&D, it portrays the feel and rules of the traditional game to every detailed line. However, Apple store's description is misleading. It claims that the game has a toolset for making your own maps and modules, though the program to do so was never coded for mac. Still, a great game.

Epic!
Written by CE from Wasilla
Jul 18, 2009
This game lets you play a character and doesn't weight your choices one way or another. The options of the games literally change depending on what your character is like, letting your character's nature guide the play.
Build one type of character, play that type of a game. A different character, different game. Well worth the money, and the most detailed and consistent game I have ever played.13 of 15 people found this useful

Good game, awful performance
Written by JP from Mountain View
Jun 20, 2008
This game is entertaining, and the epic storyline and good side quests and mini-games really satisfied me, but the performance of the whole thing is so abysmal that it almost ruins the whole game. My computer meets the "recommended" specs (well above the "minimum" specs) but even with all of the high quality graphics turned down or off entirely, I still get an awful 6-10 frames per second.
Performance matters in games! My experience here was ruined! Unless you have a 8-core machine with the top of the line video card, I'd stay away from this one. Not worth the price for the frustration you get.
(Yes, I'm using the latest available patch from Aspyr here.)20 of 29 people found this useful

Needs the update that isn't coming
Written by KB from Minneapolis
Nov 2, 2009
This game was probably awesome on a PC when it was released but is basically unusable on a newer Mac with Snow Leopard. That they are charging $50 for a game that crashes nearly every time a character attempts to transition to a new area is irresponsible. That I spent money to buy this game was just stupid on my part. You would be better off using an old PC or using bootcamp and running the PC version than attempting to play this on OS X, which in truth, is too bad.

Very Nice on HD
Written by LW from Sacramento
Jun 27, 2008
I am running the game on a 24" iMac 2.8Ghz and it runs pretty smooth. A few glitches here and there but that may be cause I have the settings on full blast. The day after I got it one of my intel processors blew out and Apple is fixing it as we speak. I can't wait to get it back and continue my campaign!

some bugs present, game just quits
Written by LH from Whitecourt
Nov 23, 2008
This game has a few bugs in it. My main issue is that I cannot continue the game once leaving the docks to merchant quarter district of Neverwinter. The game just quits unexpectedly. Got a replacement disc from Aspyr after pestering them for a couple weeks by email. New disc did the same thing. Report sent to Apple but unlikely to get a fix as Aspyr support was no help. Computer meets the minimum system requirements. Game should therefore work.

Same problem as LH. When trying to go to the merchant quarter, the game crashes every time, latest patch, making this a $50 demo. Brand new Mac Pro, ATI Radeon HD 4870, 8 gigs of ram. Just won't get past that point.

Needs patch updates
Written by BP from RUTHER GLEN
Oct 5, 2009
This game does not work well and has not been patched since 1.12. They (Aspyr) needs to update this to the current 1.23 before you should consider purchasing. Otherwise, you will only have single player only and BTW, it will just crash on you.
IT is a good game, just not a well maintained port to OS X. Hopefully, Aspyr will update this to 1.23 or current, and fix the crashing problems. Check before you buy, otherwise this is pretty much a coaster and nice box.6 of 7 people found this useful

Does not work with Snow Leopard
Written by OL from Northfield
Nov 20, 2009
I just got this game for my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and it keeps crashing. Aspyr came out with a new patch that would supposedly make this game more compatible with Mac, but even after installing it, the game continues to crash at random times. Do not buy this product. I hope the people at Apple and Aspyr own up to this.

This game plays great and looks great. The only reason Im giving it four stars is because it crashes a lot so you end up booting the game and saving more than you end up playing. Otherwise its the best rpg on the market!

More stars if it worked.
Written by CJ from Cupertino

It's a fun game, and involving enough. Some really neat stuff, and some cool execution of ideas. Not wild about the camera modes, if you're standing too close to an object it blocks the cam and spinning the mouse around to get a proper view is a pain. Near objects should go transparent more aggressively. Irritating, but not a deal breaker. What is a deal breaker, is that it crashes like a MF on my 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo MB-Pro with the GForce 8600M GT Graphics. I mean, when it picks a spot to crash it sticks there for good, or for a good long time. I finally just uninstalled it. I'm willing to try something a few times without frustration, but I was restarting and reloading the same saves 20-30 times just to try to inch forward in the plot. I left the Windows world after 15 years, and guess who's getting laughed at right now? Uh-huh. You got it. Maybe they should do a PC ad with the Mac guy dressed as a NWN2 character and have him freeze and crash non-stop? That'd be funny. Ya? Anyhow, if you have the 8600M GT card, apparently this game isn't for you. Sure you spent the $$ for a cool Mac, but no fun RPG for you, no-siree.

Outstanding Game
Written by GL

Excellent all around--interesting and in-depth story line, with dynamic characters and interaction. I especially like the voice actors and the characters you can add to your party. If there is a weakness, it would be that the story ends more or less the same way. Still, if all roads lead to the same place, there are many different ways to get there, and it definitely matters what kind of character you play and how you play it. I look forward to the expansion and a sequel!
