    Ok except for encryption

    Written by SS from Indianapolis

    Oct 28, 2007

I have been trying for six weeks to get an encrypted backup to work with no success. I have been working with thier customer support, who are very fast and responsive, but to no avail. The problem is it just will not restore from an encrypted backup. If you want to use it for non-encrypted purpses it works fine.

    Works Great

    Written by JM from Austin

I was looking for a simple, but effective way to backup my User Folder to an external drive. This product does the trick with no issues.
I also use it to backup various project folders to other external drives, and it works great.
I have been very pleased with this Software.

    Bugs, bugs and more bugs

    Written by AD from Maspeth

I had very little luck with this app. The backup schedules disappear or become damaged, source and destination volumes/folders disappear and have to be reset every few backups, can't save new scripts most of the time (save script is grayed out), I have to duplicate existing scripts and "save as", can't make "do a full scan" option stick, it would often miss files, often when I tried to re-add a destination after it disappeared it says that the source was already used do I want to read the information? Whether I click yes or no it doesn't add the source, I have to remove the .indeligible (or whatever that's called) using the terminal, then I can re-add the destination. Useless logs on top of that. Really weird GUI and options. After two backup scripts disappeared from the list yesterday I got fed up and I've gone back to Retrospect Express (I wanted a native app and the ability to delete oldest backups). Hopefully Retrospect X will address those. Wasted 60 bucks...

    Just Pitiful!

Written by DN from Maple Grove

There was absolutely no QA involved in the development of this APP. I've had nothing but issues. From incomplete backups due to unexplainable errors...to saved backup profiles that magically disappear. The program itself is not intuitive and lacks adequate documentation. I have no idea what backup is good or where some of these originated from. I'm sorry but this is not a professionally developed app. My background: I have over 25 years experience in IT and data management on major systems. This pgm could easily be a high quality app if they wanted it to be. Thanks.

    Not dependable.

    Written by IK from Pacifica

Noted that not all primary files that had been updated or changed had been captured on the back-up drive. Older file versions remained unchanged resulting in a discrepancy between the primary drive data and back-up drive data. With an incident of a primary hard drive crash along with a subsequent review of the 'back-up' data, it was revealed that the scheduled back-up times simply stopped initiating weeks prior to the crash event. Would not recommend this product because of the above two issues.

DB3 has Issues, but saved me.

Written by DG from Mountain View

    Feb 21, 2009

This is a mixed review. My initial experience with DB3 was very negative. I wrote a web page to describe the issues: (Google search for "DataBackup3.0"). But once I stuck to Clone backups, I had relatively good success, although Fast Start didn't work. The last time I tried a backup, the process "froze", and I lost my hard drive. Fortunately, DB3 hadn't written anything to the external backup drive, so my clone was intact. I was able to install a new hard disk, boot from the clone, and then clone back to my hard drive. Without that, I'd have lost everything. So DB3 saved me. For that reason alone, it was worth it.

    The backup sets would disappear

    Written by RK from Vancouver

    May 1, 2009

I have been using "Data Backup 3" for months. Once in a while, I would notice some backup sets (think of them as scripts) missing from the list. I am so tired of re-creating the scripts. I am going back to the application "Backup" designed for .mac (.me) subscribers.

    FileVault Backups

    Written by PP from Spokane

    Dec 9, 2009

I highly recommend Data Backup as your backup application. I use a FileVault account and no other backup software was able to make a nightly backup of my boot drive while I was running from my FileVault account. Only Data Backup was able to do that. I had to log out of my FileVault account if I wanted to make a nightly backup with the other backup applications.

I tested Data Backup for a month to ensure that every new file I added to my FileVault account was being encrypted on the backup drive and Data Backup did not fail to keep every new file I placed in any area of my FileVault account in the encrypted sparseimage on the backup drive.

Data Backup was the first application to allow you to backup your FileVault account while you are running from it, and it was able to do that long before any of the other backup apps were capable of doing that, so Data Backup is far ahead of everyone else.

The support I received was also excellent. There were some things I didn't understand but once they were explained to me everything fell into place.

    Easy Backups and Prompt Support

    Written by LT from Knightdale

    Dec 3, 2009

Data Backup is the easiest, most reliable, and most flexible backup software that I've found for the Mac. I use it to backup all of my home and work computers to local and network drives.

I recently had a problem with backing up to a remote drive, and the support team helped me to resolve the issue very quickly. I highly recommend this product and the ProSoft company.

Me too: Works well, instructions lacking.

    Written by GC from Delhi

    Dec 2, 2009

For me personally, the instructions did not seem to sufficiently explain some of the features and the trouble thereby that results. It took a while to figure out how to create a bootable clone for example. The functionality of the product is excellent and other than issues directly related to my lack of understanding, Data Backup works as described by Prosoft. Their customer service/support is excellent and NOT out-sourced.

    Great Customer Service

    Written by MM from Winston-Salem

I had some trouble getting the software to work with the older OSX 10.4.11 operating system. I called in and received the information I needed to get the program running from a very patient and competent customer service representative. Now that the program is running it seems to be working flawlessly and fulfilling all of my backup needs.

    Works well, a bit complex

    Written by GS from CHARLESTON

    Nov 2, 2009

I have been using Data Backup 3 for two years. I have not had the problems others seem to have had. Has always worked well for me, though I have not used the Clone option as I already use SuperDuper for clone backups. The other options are sort like Time Machine but with many many different ways to backup data and even retrieve files long since gone from your primary hard disk. You have lots of options about how you want your data backed up: you can back up to hard drives, to flash drives, to CDs; you can backup with your entire drive or only certain folders or files on the hard drive; you can make backups that save files you have long since erased from your drive or you can just do a straight copy of what is on your drive; you can schedule automatic backups. For when I travel I created a backup option to have only the files changed in the past seven days backup to my flash drive. Takes very little space, runs quickly, goes to a flash drive so can carry anywhere and thus I can and will do it frequently. Learning all this does take reading the manual, but with all the options, I am not sure it could less complex. Support by email is fast. The GUI is a bit clunky. That and the fact that you have read the manual keep me from giving it a five.
