Need for Speed Carbon
Mixed feelings
Written by RM from Brunswick
Sep 23, 2007
I have a 2.4 Ghz MacBook Pro (LED) w/2 GB RAM. NFSC constantly crashes and is essentially unplayable. This could be due to the graphics card in the MBP. On the other hand, it does play nicely on my iMac CoreDuo 1.83 Ghz w/1 GB RAM. It would have been nice to see it running on the MacBook Pro which was the machine I originally wanted to use it on. Perhaps EA (or Apple with a graphics driver update) will issue a patch in the near future to allow this. I'm giving NFSC a 4 since it works well on the iMac, but 0 stars for the MacBook Pro.

Woot NFSC

The Poster before me,
Maybe some people can't afford to fork over a load of money for a Mac Pro, maybe it's the fact that Apple really doesn't supply any graphics cards above the 256MB for mobile computers, maybe it's the fact that you can't change the graphics card that Apple has soldered into the computer itself?
anywho, NFSC is pretty cool, though, I really wish apple/EA would keep the reqs to 512MB, and make a Universal Port.27 of 40 people found this useful

Runs Great, People neeed too look at graphic cards!

I have a Mac Pro and this thing screams. People are getting a bunch of ram and really fast processors and don't get me wrong that stuff really helps! But people need to get good graphic cards in there mac's too. You can't expect to get perfect graphics out of a 256Mb card.
I have a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB and this thing runs perfect on all the highest settings. People can not get the cheapest graphic cards and expect to get the perfect screen play. You need to get everything from processor and ram TO A GOOD GRAPHICS'S CARD.
So don't complain when you get a cheaper card if you want stunning graphics's you will have to pay for it, but IT IS WORTH IT!!!62 of 81 people found this useful

No wide screen support makes game seem dated.
Written by LM from Piermont

This is the grand porting of ea games to mac and what you get is an xbox like version not the 360 widescreen version.
I just wrote a long review and I ran out of apple time and my review was erased *&^%$$ dang it all. But EA should look at id's Quake 4, it has 16:10 resolution settings for apple flat panel monitors, 16:9 res for hooking your mac to a wide screen tv that was new to any mac game and it rocks playing quake full wide screen on my hd tv and quake is at least 2 years old. Carbon is only 4:3. No one really uses crts any more do they. Oh I can't wait to use my Svideo out of my mac to hook it up to my old crt tv. If I wanted to do that I would just get the old xbox version. It is a great game and runs well on my first gen macbook pro with 2 gigs of ram and 256 video ram. I will cry if madden is the same and does not support wide screen. I know the pc version does. For a grand roll out I would say they did the minimum to port this to mac. Disappointing EA. And not universal means I can't play it on my G5 duel 2.7. Which is my most powerful gaming box.
On the plus side my old gravis game pad pro works great with the game. Did I just say old again, this does seem dated! I still give this 4 stars because it is the best driving game I have played on a mac thus far, and a lot of fun. Some new games crash your computer this has been very solid for it's first version, hopefully they will update it and give us the wide screen resolutions!!40 of 60 people found this useful

What the? No Widescreen Support!?
Written by JS from New Haven

The Need for Speed series has always been solid and the Carbon port is no exception. The game play is tight, and responsive. Graphically, its great as well though you will have to play around with the settings. But what really bothers me is the apparent lack of widescreen support. I have a 16:10 MBP, with a wondrous widescreen display and all I could find was 4:3 resolutions. That is just not right... If I am mistaken, let me know and add a star to my score. The game play is great and that is the main reason to play this game.

First off all, the folks claiming that they are getting low framerates, lags and bla bla, either have to be lying or they are doing something wrong.
I have a 17" iMac 2.0ghz C2Duo, 2GB RAM, 128mb Ati X1600 and i couldn't believe how smooth, and i mean smooth and tight this game runs. Installed first day, and i was racing left and right. The cars are so tight and fast, that i get a rush when playing.
This game runs perfect on my system, not one hiccup as the folks below are mentioning. And you absolutely do not need a Mac Pro to run this smoothly, please!! Go get this game !!116 of 161 people found this useful

Fun game but it "needs more speed"

I'm using a 2.33 gigahertz 24" imac with 2 gigs ram and a Geforce 7600. I have been playing the game for a week and enjoy it but am disappointed with the fact that I'm getting such low framerates. The game runs ok with mid level graphics settings. Maybee it runs smoother on the Mac Pro.

Good Port!

I have a 2.33 Ghz MBP with ATI x1600 256mb and 2gig ram. The game runs FINE on medium settings with some highs mixed in on 1024 resolution. I have played about four hours so far and it has ran like a champ. I think it runs very well for being a Cider port, and I think it runs very well for running on a laptop. Play with your graphics settings when you get it and it will pay off. Remember the more ram the better for this game.
If you enjoy car racing games I think this is the game for you. It has a corny story-line but is fun to play and try and out run cops! I think the game couldn't have been ported any better, just play with the graphics and have fun!61 of 77 people found this useful

System requirements a little misleading...
Written by MS from Pittsburgh
Aug 28, 2007
On a 20" iMac (2GHz Core Duo) with 2GB RAM and a 256MB Radeon x1600, this game will often momentarily pause or hitch up visually when new scenery appears on screen or when more than a few cars are on screen at the same time. It may run fine on a newer/better machine but I'm very disappointed in the game's performance on my system given that it exceeds the published system requirements. The game itself seems pretty cool and would probably rate four stars but I'm knocking two off for the performance issues. Hopefully, EA will address this problem at some point but for now, those just meeting or exceeding the requirements should probably steer clear.

Absolutely love the game

I've been waiting for the release ever since EA announced developing the game on the Mac platform. Been playing it for more than a week now and all I can say is they did a wonderful job. I may not be able to maximize the graphics potential of the game since I'm running on a 2gig RAM first revision MBP, but to me, what matters most is that there is an effort on EA to bring their titles into the Mac platform which also gives non-Mac users no excuse to use Macs for gaming. Again, I'm am an extremely satisfied fan of NFSC on the Mac platform!!!

The Graphics
Written by PB from Berrien Springs
Aug 24, 2007
I was so excited when I saw that Need for Speed Carbon was going to run natively on the Intel Mac! I bought a copy right away, and to my dismay it ran absolutely horribly. The graphics were very grainy, and it definitely wasn't running at full speed. If you think its because I was running it with the minimum possible system requirements you are unfortunately wrong... I was running it on a Mac Pro 3ghz Core Duo with 256Mb Video memory and 2Gb of Memory. I was viewing it on a beautiful 23" Apple Display. If any system should have been able to handle this game, its this one. I wouldn't waste your time with it. I have run Need For Speed Most Wanted through Windows via Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro and it ran awesome. I am very sad that I have to send this game back. Some things are just to good to be true...

The rendering is flawless on my Macbook Pro. It works beautifully. I just love the game.
Games was the only reason I missed Windows. Hopefully that gap will slowly get filled.637 of 925 people found this useful
